Electric toothbrush

I am aware this is a small issue and by no means the biggest problem in my life but...

I recently bought an electric toothbrush (came with 2 toothbrush heads) and it got delivered to my house whilst a friend was over. I opened the parcel and they saw it what it was and said oh is that yours or DHs?
I said it's for both, as our old one broke, we share it and have our own brush head each.

Well my friend was horrified that we share an electric toothbrush?! We only share the bit you hold and we have our own brush heads?!

Now I thought everyone did this?! Are we gross?????

That is very, mundanely normal!

Jezzballs2000 · 02/03/2020 22:01

Totally normal!

PurpleDaisies · 02/03/2020 22:01

It’s totally normal. That’s why they come with different coloured heads.

Poppins2016 · 02/03/2020 22:01

My DH and I have our own electric toothbrushes but he does sometimes use mine (with his brush head!) if his loses charge and that doesn't bother me at all... I don't see anything wrong with your arrangement (except the inconvenience, but I guess I'm lazy)!

Boom45 · 02/03/2020 22:02

Everyone shares. Shes a weirdo.

ivfbabymomma1 · 02/03/2020 22:04

Thank you!!!!

I was 90% sure it was normal but then I started to question if I was the only one and it was really unhygienic 🙈😂

I think it's a bit weird to be honest, why not just have one each and not have to faff about changing the head each time you brush your teeth? What if you both need to brush at the same time?

weeklycubrun · 02/03/2020 22:05

Hmmmm I don't know if that's a good idea or not...
a quick google search shows some oral b electric toothbrushes @£18-£20 so not totally overpriced.
I would be concerned re the handles, as they get really sticky and mucky and potentially spread bugs.
Also I can imagine occasionally forgetting to change the head.

PurpleDaisies · 02/03/2020 22:06

Also I can imagine occasionally forgetting to change the head.

Do you ever accidentally use someone else’s toothbrush because you’ve forgotten which one yours is?

ivfbabymomma1 · 02/03/2020 22:07

@elizabethG81 it's just literally never crossed my mind to get two! I thought sharing was standard practice 😂

What if you both need to brush at the same time?

In fifteen years of marriage, that situation had never arisen.

Changing the head takes approximately three seconds.

ivfbabymomma1 · 02/03/2020 22:09

We got a Philips one that was on sale for £40 so I suppose 2 wouldn't break the bank but I'd rather pay £40 than £80 🙈

The brush heads have different colour discs at the bottom so we can't forget who's is who's and they have little caps on them

It sounds like far too much faff, I would never have thought about sharing the toothbrush Confused

PurpleDaisies · 02/03/2020 22:11

Seriously, how much faff do you think pulling the head off and putting yours on is? Confused

EmmaFromEngland · 02/03/2020 22:13

It's just weird! Which one gets to keep the toothbrush when one of you go away?

SwanneeKazoo · 02/03/2020 22:13

I would be concerned re the handles, as they get really sticky and mucky and potentially spread bugs.

You rinse the handle when you've done. It's battery operated and sealed so it's waterproof.

This thread is bats.

couchlover · 02/03/2020 22:14

We have one each but I've been known to use DH's and him mine. I couldn't be faffed changing the heads but I don't think it weird.

ivfbabymomma1 · 02/03/2020 22:16

We do have a manual toothbrush each should one travel

This is what I was wondering Confused

I mean, I wouldn't be distressed, like your friend was, at the idea of someone else sharing like that - each to their own, I can't get worked up about it - but I do think it is a bit odd / unusual, and a bit of a faff.

StrawberrySquash · 02/03/2020 22:19

When I lived at home all four of us shared a toothbrush body. Perfectly sensible. Used to share with my ex too.

PurpleDaisies · 02/03/2020 22:21

Have those people who think it’s a faff ever changed a toothbrush head?

Fuss · 02/03/2020 22:21

Many of the stands for these have holders for the separate heads to share.
DH and I have our own, but only because he chooses to use a different bathroom than me.
Sharing a Base and swapping heads is quite normal.

GetTheSprinkles · 02/03/2020 22:26

I've never heard of anyone sharing an electric toothbrush base and would think my DH was crazy if he suggested this.
Where do you put the head when it's not on the brush? In some little case? Doesn't the case get a bit moist and gross?
What if your other half doesnt thoroughly clean and dry the handle? I can imagine the row every morning at 7am!
Out of curiosity, would you folks also share a non-electric brush (totally different I know, but just curious).

pigsDOfly · 02/03/2020 22:30

Can't believe posters are saying it's a faff to change the brush head.

I live alone so I'm the only one using my brush body but after every use it I run the body under the tap, so that it isn't sticky and covered in toothpaste, and I remove the head at the same time as I rinse the whole thing. Why is that difficult?

If they weren't intended to be shared what would be the point of the different coloured rings that you put on the brushes?
