Electric toothbrush

I am aware this is a small issue and by no means the biggest problem in my life but...

I recently bought an electric toothbrush (came with 2 toothbrush heads) and it got delivered to my house whilst a friend was over. I opened the parcel and they saw it what it was and said oh is that yours or DHs?
I said it's for both, as our old one broke, we share it and have our own brush head each.

Well my friend was horrified that we share an electric toothbrush?! We only share the bit you hold and we have our own brush heads?!

Now I thought everyone did this?! Are we gross?????

Loads of posters have described it as a faff shirley.

SpoonBlender · 03/03/2020 17:39

Anyone talking about the unhygienic nature of sharing - it's far, far grimmer to not pop the head off and rinse it out properly through the base! If you're sharing that's basically enforced, and can only be a good thing. They go foul if you just rinse the head and leave it all on, all that foamy spit in there... vom.

ShirleyPhallus · 03/03/2020 17:41

Ok, well @PurpleDaisies I was one of the posters who described it as a faff and explained exactly why it was to me. Thank you though!

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 03/03/2020 17:42

The non sharers are insane...

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 03/03/2020 17:44

Technically we could all share a knife too, we don't put them in our mouth, that would save a few pennies too Grin

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 03/03/2020 17:45

For those asking, I’ve 5 dc, (2yo still uses a manual) so even when they’re going cheap on Prime I’d still be looking at £80-£100 for the 4 dc to have one each. There are far more interesting things to spend that money on. When Dc5 starts using one we’ll probably buy a second one for the boy’s & the girl’s can have their own.

PatsyJStone · 03/03/2020 17:45

I’ve shared far more intimate things with my other half to worry about sharing the electric toothbrush!
Have accidentally used his brush, we have one each and only take one on holiday to save on packing with two brushes.
But what I will catch from him via his toothbrush and what I could catch via all the other things we share, well ... theres food for thought!

Queenbean · 03/03/2020 17:54

I just never thought of having a toothbrush each as being a luxury

The things that MN teaches me honestly

PurpleDaisies · 03/03/2020 17:55

An £80 toothbrush each isn’t a luxury queen?

Queenbean · 03/03/2020 17:57

Not all electric toothbrushes are £80

And even if they were and it lasted for years then (including the cost of heads) it would be £15-20 per year. So no, not a luxury IMO.

curlsnotfrizz · 03/03/2020 18:20

if you can afford 5 DC, surely you can afford 5 toothbrushes. That is only a drop in the ocean costwise of raising such a huge brood. Confused

Yummymummy2020 · 03/03/2020 18:22

I see nothing wrong with this at all and agree that’s why the heads have different colours to attach to them! I have my own but it wouldn’t bother me to share the main bit and change the heads!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 03/03/2020 18:25

I didn’t say I could afford it I said there are more interesting things to spend that sort of money on Grin

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 03/03/2020 18:26

Couldn’t Blush

Aragog · 03/03/2020 18:36

We have always shared an electric toothbrush. We have separate heads.
I'm pretty sure everyone I know with electric does too. Totally normal.
Why would our brush holder have space for four heads otherwise?!

Aragog · 03/03/2020 18:39

I think it's a bit weird to be honest, why not just have one each and not have to faff about changing the head each time you brush your teeth? What if you both need to brush at the same time?

Electric brushes can be expensive. Ours was over £60 a couple of years ago. Why would I needlessly spare an extra £60?

It takes approximately 2 seconds to remove the head. We both do this after use anyway to our in the covered head holder. Actually it probably takes 10 seconds as we tend to give it a rinse inside too first.

In 25 years of living together we've never needed to both brush our teeth at the same time. We've always managed that one person needs to wait a couple of minutes til the other has finished.

Aragog · 03/03/2020 18:41

It's very rarely we go away without one another. But we always have some manual spares in - invade of unexpected visitors, for travelling, nights away, etc. You can often buy a pack of 4 for a pound and you often get given a travel sized one in long haul flights, we keep then.

Aragog · 03/03/2020 18:48

If the bases and holders were designed to be shared why would the head holder bit have more than one space??

Electric toothbrush
ivfbabymomma1 · 03/03/2020 18:49

@justincasecakehappens

I can afford two... I just thought sharing was the norm! It never crossed my mind that it wasn't till my friend commented on it!

OP posts:
SimonJT · 03/03/2020 18:52

We share one, as in head and all. It seems a bit pointless for him to have an entire washbag he leaves here when he tends to only stay over once a week.

pollysproggle · 03/03/2020 18:59

Everyone in my house including the kids have their own electric toothbrush! We only share the charger.
I don't see a problem with sharing if you don't mind. I wouldn't use my husbands as the handle is rank.

WidowTwonky · 03/03/2020 19:05

Do you all have multiple plug sockets in your bathroom?? We only have the capacity to plug in one toothbrush so share. Easy peasy

CheshireDing · 03/03/2020 19:23

YABU

It has never crossed my mind to share an electric toothbrush with DH, we have one each, different makes and can take it away without having to have a spare manual one.

Sounds bonkers changing the heads all the time.

PurpleDaisies · 03/03/2020 19:32

cheshire I challenge to go and take the head off your toothbrush and put it back on again.

Then report back on how “bonkers” it was.

rosettesforjill · 03/03/2020 19:35

My dentist actually recommended just buying one base and sharing the heads 🤷🏼‍♀️ I think it's totally normal!
