Electric toothbrush

I am aware this is a small issue and by no means the biggest problem in my life but...

I recently bought an electric toothbrush (came with 2 toothbrush heads) and it got delivered to my house whilst a friend was over. I opened the parcel and they saw it what it was and said oh is that yours or DHs?
I said it's for both, as our old one broke, we share it and have our own brush head each.

Well my friend was horrified that we share an electric toothbrush?! We only share the bit you hold and we have our own brush heads?!

Now I thought everyone did this?! Are we gross?????

I find the idea of two people standing side-by-side trying to share the same basin more bizarre than the idea that one would wait two minutes for the first to get there to finish. If two males in your household need to pee at the same time, in the same bathroom, do they stand either side of the toilet and take aim?

DH and I always get ready for bed together, brush our teeth at the same time etc. No drama of sharing the basin.

Yes, when any men in the house need the toilet they all just crowd around one toilet and take aim. Similarly, if we all want a shower at the same time we all squeeze under the shower head and are grateful for any drops of water.

I'm sure it's normal but my DP doesn't brush regularly and I'd worry he'd forget and use my brush head and other peoples mouth bacteria grosses me out nearly as much as other people's pillows!

JammieCodger · 03/03/2020 10:05

Thank you, OP, I can’t believe I’ve never thought of this. Why on earth did I fork out for a base each?!

Now, where’s the latest version of the ‘things you’ve only just found out’ thread...

Waveysnail · 03/03/2020 10:07

I know your supposed to share but I find it grim so everyone has their own in our house

NoSauce · 03/03/2020 10:57

I know your supposed to share

Says who?

ivfbabymomma1 · 03/03/2020 11:01

🤣🤣 i love these answers!!! I genuinely thought it was standard to share!

I won't be forking out for a second one but I think when my baby is old enough to use one then he will have his own! I'm not sure I would trust him to change them over and just use mine! 😂 plus we won't be sharing a bathroom!

For people asking about what happens if one of us goes away, we have a stash spare manuals just incase!

This is one of those things that I would automatically say was weird and yet I can't really think of a reason why!

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 03/03/2020 11:05

Well the toothbrush cost a small fortune so of course we share it. No drama, and we store the heads in a closed compartment that gets cleaned every time I clean the en-suite.

pazwaz70 · 03/03/2020 11:09

We have one each. It's too much of a faff changing the heads every time!

SueEllenMishke · 03/03/2020 11:10

I know your supposed to share

Really? It had never occurred to me to share and judging by what I see in friends and families bathrooms it obviously hasn't occurred to them either.

TwoBlueFish · 03/03/2020 11:11

We have 2 electric toothbrushes to share between 4 of us. Everyone takes their brush head off after brushing and rinses the handle, so easy peasy. We also each have a manual brush if needed.

Stressheadme123 · 03/03/2020 11:46

After reading the thread a while back on here about disgusting habits there are a whole lot of rotten fuckers on here. Fact.

Find it very hard to believe you are all so precious about a toothbrush handle. Very normal to share the electric base. Unless you like liking toothbrush handles.

Stressheadme123 · 03/03/2020 11:47

Licking*

SwanneeKazoo · 03/03/2020 16:23

A lot of people on here must lead very pampered lives if they think that changing the head on an electric tooth brush constitutes a "massive faff".
Is the butler not up at the time you clean your teeth?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 03/03/2020 16:25

She'd be horrified at me then.If my toothbrush needs charging then I use DH's.

It's just so ridiculous, how tight are you if you have to share toothbrushes. Hardly a pampered life to have one per person.

Itstheprinciple · 03/03/2020 17:17

I take my brush head off each time anyway as it doesn't fit in the cupboard with it on. I just stand the head up next to it with a little cap on.

DH doesn't use an electric toothbrush anymore but he did used to and, on occasion, I would use a separate brush head on it for myself except he's a bit grim and it was always left drippy and toothpastey so I didn't like it. I always give mine a rinse preen

HeyMac · 03/03/2020 17:21

Wtf. My actually come with coloured rings so you can share the base.

We even have a regular guest with their own toothbrush head.

But then we also have loo brushes so I should probably set my house on fire immediately.

SciFiScream · 03/03/2020 17:26

To the PP who asked if we'd buy a second hand electric toothbrush and use that - no but because you have no idea how good the battery is, not for any other reason.

Our electric toothbrush is now about 5/6 years old. When it was first new it could do 16 minutes of brushing (4 people, 2 minutes each, twice a day) two or three times without a charge. Now it needs to live permanently on charge to have enough to do a 6 minutes of brushing!

The batteries can't be swapped out cost effectively.

We're all trained to clean and dry the toothbrush after use and if we don't do a good enough job there are discussions and debates about the quality of our cleaning/drying! Grin

It's what you're supposed to do!

Blimey, your sex life must be fun

if you're using your electric toothbrush for Sex.. then you have bigger problems than sharing the brush

ShirleyPhallus · 03/03/2020 17:29

Yes, at the absolute heart of luxury is having one toothbrush each Confused

As I said, we often pack them in day bags for the gym / going out after work / going away for the weekend etc. Personally seems entirely pointless to share an electric toothbrush at home and have a manual one in your travel bag and in that sense is a “faff” to agree which of you gets to keep the toothbrush for the day. Having one each makes sense. Hardly a luxury.

PurpleDaisies · 03/03/2020 17:32

That’s not the situation most people are in shirley. Most toothbrushes stay in the bathroom.

PurpleDaisies · 03/03/2020 17:34

Mind cost £80. It’s not tight not to want to spend that sort of money on something totally unnecessary.

ShirleyPhallus · 03/03/2020 17:36

@purpledaisies I was the poster that described it as a “faff” though as quoted by the poster above
