Just been playing in my mind a little bit (slow day I guess).. just read on another post that people find the term boobing (breastfeeding) offensive, cringy, chav etc... I had NO idea.. I think I prob use this term alot... is this really a terrible word?

It makes me wince. I don’t mind the word boob. Or even ‘give the baby some Boob’.

Whereas for me it instantly brings the bile up my throat Grin

Wouldn't "give the baby some nipple" be more appropriate if anything? I'm assuming the baby doesn't have much interest in the rest of it.

To me it screams of mums who have to make A REALLY BIG DEAL about the fact that they're breastfeeding. But I should probably add that I'm very sensitive about not being able to breastfeed either of my kids and tend to see anything about breastfeeding as rubbing my nose in it.

Honestly OP stop overthinking, I doubt anyone you know will have blackballed you on the basis of you using the phrase...they maybe do an inward eye roll & then don't think any more about it. One of my dearest friends uses 'holibobs' regularly and, whilst it makes me inwardly wince, I don't think any less of her!

handbagsatdawn33 · 02/03/2020 19:33

Anyone remember the US comedy programme where it was called "titty time" - yuk.

And an adult David Walliams telling his TV Mum he wanted "bitty" - much to the consternation of the girlfriend.

YappityYapYap · 02/03/2020 19:33

Bottled her to sleep 😂. I imagine SS would be very busy if parents were bottling their babies to sleep. Actually can't stop laughing at that

Aridane · 02/03/2020 19:34

It’s a word - that’s all

grudieabbey · 02/03/2020 19:34

It’s disgusting and childish. I’m breastfeeding so it’s nothing against the act itself but it’s a vulgar term that, if anything, debases the act. You’re feeding your child not ‘boobing’. It’s just totally YUCK.

BrendasUmbrella · 02/03/2020 19:35

I also hate to hear "changing the baby's bum", why can't people say nappy.

I know. We don't say "I brought a spare pair of knickers so I can change my vagina".

It makes me think of someone taking their babys shitty arse off, throwing it in the bin and producing a squeaky clean new one from somewhere!

AMomHasNoName · 02/03/2020 19:35

I hear it alot in within various breastfeeding groups I'm in. I dont use the term myself but I've never batted an eyelid at it being used.

Nelly325 · 02/03/2020 19:35

It's awful!!

Huns2Getha4Eva · 02/03/2020 19:35

I dont think theirs anything wrong with boobing. Or with changing a bum!!! thats what your doing isnt it?

Gre8scott · 02/03/2020 19:36

When I breastfeed I had a friend who used to say I'm giving him some boob he needs the boob. I hated it it was like nails going down a blackboard!!!

Goodgollymiss · 02/03/2020 19:36

I've just never though about it before now

Scout2016 · 02/03/2020 19:37

@Tunnocks34 I got brought up being told to call bowel movements "moves". As in "I need a move". Blush Love to know what on earth other adults like my teachers thought I was on about. Still feel naughty saying poo, or worse Grin

PleaseSeeMeNow · 02/03/2020 19:37

I think it irritates me because it feels like there is a need to make sure everyone knows they're breastfeeding.

I bf and I just said (if I needed to say anything) oh they’re hungry, they need feeding or they’re due a feed. ‘Boobing’ the baby makes me cringe a bit. Just feed them, you don’t have to announce how you do it.

Sorry you’re feeling a bit low OP.

EarlGreyT · 02/03/2020 19:37

It’s worse than bad. It’s horrific.

custardbear · 02/03/2020 19:38

It's pretty vulgar, up there with 'want a bot-bot'and 'I need to change his bum' 🥴

Serin · 02/03/2020 19:38

Tunnocks34 you deserve a medal for putting up with her.
God, I would commit murder if a grown woman said "pee pee" to me.
Once had a patient going on about her sore bum bum and I replied "do you mean your anus?" She was horrified that I used a proper medical term but hell would freeze over before I played along with her childish terminology.

ImportantWater · 02/03/2020 19:40

I believe this is an example of synecdoche, or “container for the thing contained”, if you want to be posh about it.
Doesn’t stop me hating it.

WinterCat · 02/03/2020 19:40

I will actually stop immediately.

Thank you.

Boob and boobing are exactly the same in my eyes and in terms of how much I dislike hearing them. Please just say feed.

EarlGreyT · 02/03/2020 19:41

@Huns2Getha4Eva
Or with changing a bum!!! thats what your doing isnt it?

No it isn’t what you’re doing. You’re changing a nappy and cleaning their bum.

You’re not changing a bum-that means you’re actually changing the bum for another one or something else-another bum or maybe you’re changing it for a foot?!

viques · 02/03/2020 19:41

worraliberty

With you all the way on holli bobs.

Goes with hubby, nomnomnom, Crimbo, pooping and love you to the moon and back . I hear them and I cringe. Boobing is joining the list.

Agree with others, feeding is fine. I also find the US term "nursing" a teensy bit twee, conjures up a vision of a brave little pioneer woman simultaneously fighting off wolves , nursing feeding a baby, stitching a quilt and baking a perfect apple pie over a fire made from two sticks and a pile of huckleberry stalks . (I don't know what huckleberries are btw, or if they have stalks)

justasking111 · 02/03/2020 19:43

Never heard either expression, baby wearing nor boobing. So would have looked blankly hearing them. Not great are they.

dustibooks · 02/03/2020 19:43

Yuk. It's as bad as 'holibobs' and 'famalam', and 'feeling blessed'. Actually, no, it's worse.
