would you care what people think about you wearing fakes?

Hello there! Would you care about what people would think if you are wearing fakes? i am an occasional replica purchaser myself, although i do have some real things, but some accessories and clothes are hugely overpriced (i feel like it is super stupid to pay £400 pounds for a gucci tshirt). I don't feel like my friends are noticing this, but still it worries me sometimes as people tend to think a lot of things. Especially if i constantly am in the environment where everyone wears real. Would you personally care about what people think? Would you continue to buy fakes?

To be fair I couldn’t get the link to work. Plus I would have no idea what a boyy bag is anyway Grin

HoffiCoffi13 · 02/03/2020 15:41

I would say the bag you have linked to is a very obvious fake to anyone who has seen the originals.
Would I judge you for it? Not really. I mean I think it’s awful but each to their own.

PineappleDanish · 02/03/2020 15:43

These things aren't "replicas". They are counterfeit.

We see a lot of fakes at the charity shop where I volunteer. We don't sell them - we're legally not allowed to - and the fakes fall into two broad categories.

First - the obvious fakes, the shoddily made, the "gucci" scarves and "chanel" bags which are cheap acrylic and plastic and probably picked up for a couple of euros in Spain. They look cheap, they are cheap. You're not fooling anyone with something that crap.

Second - the better quality handbags and clothing. Sometimes we'll get a bag, usually Mulberry or Radley and we'll really not be sure if it's kosher. Sometimes the fakers will use leather rather than PVC, and do things like add the little trademarks people will expect to see. But if you know what you're looking for, it;s easy to spot the fakes. My take on it is that a decent quality leather bag costing £20 or £30 is fine. Why would you spend that amount and get a counterfeit one?

I'm getting quite good at spotting counterfeits. My speciality is "Ugg" boots - think around 1 in every 50 pairs is actually the real thing.

I do judge people who buy/wear fakes. It's champagne tastes on lemonade budget. And 99% of the time, the stuff is nasty, badly made and poorly designed. Just use your money to buy a cheaper, genuine item.

Bluntness100 · 02/03/2020 15:47

I’m sorry op. But I’m surprised you are arguing fakes are better than originals based on the link you posted.

That’s a clearly very cheap bag, made in China, that they are only getting away with charging fifteen quid for because it’s a knock off of a much more expensive and it has to be said, really gorgeous bag, if it wasn’t they’d be lucky to get a fiver for it.

Even if you didn’t know about the real version it would still look like what it is, a very cheap bag. Honestly instead of squandering money pretending to have the real deal you’d be better saving it and buying a few decent quality items.

Crystal87 · 02/03/2020 15:48

I'm not interested in designer labels so wouldn't buy fakes. However I couldn't care less what other people buy.

PineappleDanish · 02/03/2020 15:51

Or develop your own personal style rather than slavishly following someone else's?

Shallistayorshalligo · 02/03/2020 15:56

If I bought a fake I would feel myself as a cheap pretenderGrin
I do like designer stuff and I do possess quite a few items. I know it is stupid and showy, etc. I still love Versace written all over me, lol. It does make me feel great. Maybe because it shouts: this stupid girl just wasted £300 on this hoodie, lol
And before you judge me, I tell you something. I know what you think! Because I think it tooGrin
I just can not help my ways. I have accepted that I am is who I am. Ces’t la vie.

Bluntness100 · 02/03/2020 15:57

Or develop your own personal style rather than slavishly following someone else's?

Yes and this. Because when you get to the stage you’re wasting money on obviously cheap shite bags from China simply because they are fakes of an expensive bag currently in fashion then it’s prob time to give your head a wobble.

lazylinguist · 02/03/2020 15:57

Tbh it's already pretty stupid to buy something just because it's a designer brand. Buying something fake because you hope other people will think it's a designer brand is a whole other level of lame.

Buy things you like for their quality/look and spend what you can afford. If you can buy less, but high quality and ethically made, so much the better.

PineappleDanish · 02/03/2020 15:58

@Shallistayorshalligo it's entirely up to you how you spend your money. If it makes you happy then you don't need to justify that choice to anyone.

The problem is that fakes are so widespread. If I see a Louis Vuitton handbag for example, I automatically think it's a fake as there are SO many of them around.

whiskeylullaby2 · 02/03/2020 16:01

don't you feel like the media (especially the bloggers and celebrities) kind of make us buy more clothes and bags and shoes in order to "fit in"

No i really don't feel like this. honestly I don't think the majority of adults do? We know that these celebs are paid to advertise them, and get most of their stuff gifted.

Sparklyring · 02/03/2020 16:01

Does no one else think this thread stinks of being a journalist touting for a story?!

Extracurricularfatigue · 02/03/2020 16:05

my friends compliment the item but we don't take about where our clothes or etc come from as they are not into fashion

Eh??? What on Earth is this thread about? Your friends aren’t into fashion?

Sofonisba · 02/03/2020 16:06

Surely you would only buy designer clothes and accessories because you care what people think? So logically, you would only buy fake one because you care what people think but want to spend less?

As in, anyone who doesn't care what people think about them wouldn't buy real or fake designer gear in the first place would they.

HaddawayAndShite · 02/03/2020 16:07

It’s very much fake despite not having a logo (intellectual property). I’m struggling to understand your point about fast fashion. You’re making (rather wild) statements about high street shops propagating gangs but your nasty cheap fakes are doing exactly the same. Except they won’t be subject to any inspections that the bigger companies do, so they’re most likely made in wise conditions / worse for the environment. There is also very much an in between between designer and fast fashion.

HaddawayAndShite · 02/03/2020 16:07

Worse* not wise

PatriciaHolm · 02/03/2020 16:08

So who is the article for, OP?

fashionistatoast · 02/03/2020 16:09

@PatriciaHolm i don't work in journalism fyi

My mum and dad bought me back a gift for looking after their dog, it was a MK bag and ive never used it Blush i said thank you at the time and they think i liked it, but fake stuff isnt my thing.
I would rather go to river island and get a lovely bag in there, even primark.

I dont see the point in replicas.
And dont get me started on replica uggs, then women keep wearing them when they start slanting to the side. Awful awful awful.

Shallistayorshalligo · 02/03/2020 16:12

@PineappleDanish absolutely true!

Pippin2028 · 02/03/2020 16:17

For me personally, nothing says I am not rich but pretending to be is... fake designer goods, posing in too many different labels e. g moschino, gucci and LV in all one outfit, posing with designer bags from the store and posing with cash in your hand.

opticaldelusion · 02/03/2020 16:18

I think you just have a self-confidence problem, OP.

Bluntness100 · 02/03/2020 16:19

I think I know what the ops saying.. It’s maybe not been explained well.

Basically she sees a trending new fashion item celebs are wearing, likely on social media. So as she can’t afford to pay the exorbitant price tag for these things, she then buys replicas of that item so she too can look like she’s got that hot new item and be what she considers fashionable.

Where this fell down op, was you posted a link to a cheap shocker of a bag. There are other similar versions of the boyy bag, on sale for about two hundred plus quid, and in their own right are fantastic bags. The one on your link is clearly not that.

The issue with the link is if you know what it’s a replica of , then it’s clearly knock off and not the real thing, the real thing is gorgeous.

But if you don’t know what it’s replicating, you think it’s just a handbag you have, then you’d just think it was a very cheaply made hand bag, which it is.

Either way it’s a loose. People can only think one of two things, it’s either a very cheap knock off of an expensive bag, or it’s just a random cheap poorly made handbag. 🤷‍♀️

BonnesVacances · 02/03/2020 16:20

So you can't afford real designer clothes, and you buy fakes so you look like you can?Confused
