would you care what people think about you wearing fakes?

Hello there! Would you care about what people would think if you are wearing fakes? i am an occasional replica purchaser myself, although i do have some real things, but some accessories and clothes are hugely overpriced (i feel like it is super stupid to pay £400 pounds for a gucci tshirt). I don't feel like my friends are noticing this, but still it worries me sometimes as people tend to think a lot of things. Especially if i constantly am in the environment where everyone wears real. Would you personally care about what people think? Would you continue to buy fakes?

well for example if you were to see me on the street how would you notice that something that i am wearing is fake? i mean if my outfit was composed well and it all looked put together

But then the question you are asking in your OP wouldn’t apply would it? How can anyone judge if they don’t notice?

Anyway, I think you’re giving this far too much headspace. Wear what you want, as ethically as you can afford. Who cares what other people think?

Ninkanink · 02/03/2020 14:25

Then maybe you are just a little too heavy-handed or lead quite a boisterous lifestyle and would be better off not paying too much for your bags. One of my bags has a couple of scratches (I use it a lot and the design means my rings can easily scrape along the top flap) but all the rest of mine still look good as new and I’ve had them for years. I’m not even sure how one would manage to scratch a saffiano leather!

But, that being said, not all designer goods are created equal. Even within the same design house quality and or function of design can vary. And I have heard that Prada isn’t that great. So maybe you’d be better suited to a different brand! Or, you could just buy more reasonably priced goods that are their own design and not a blatant ripoff. Fakes and replicas are always made to look like the real thing, they’re not just homages or in the style of.

No one is saying you have to wear designer goods to look well put together. Plenty of people who can’t afford designer goods look great wearing high street fashion. Plenty of people who can afford designer goods also mainly wear high street and just spend on big ticket items here and there.

@ChainsawBear is absolutely right - look at this story from 18 monthsa ago when Burberry burned £28.6million worth of stoick rather than have it discounted as part of their crack-down on counterfeiters and illegal traders.

Cacaca · 02/03/2020 14:28

No, if it’s not the genuine brand then absolutely no chance. I have designer bags that are 15 years old still with plenty of life in them. Had I bought a replica version I’d probably have spent more replacing bags every time they fell apart so yes, they are worth it.

fashionistatoast · 02/03/2020 14:28

@Ninkanink i am talking mostly about the corners of the bag (although i am always very careful with the items that i own)

mnthrowaway202020 · 02/03/2020 14:30

So take it back to Prada?

Part of the luxury shopping experience is having a very high level of customer service, including an attentive personal shopper and after sales. They just look up your purchase under your account and arrange for the item to be repaired or replaced in interests of customer service.

Once I was in LV and bought something. Was having a chat to my SA and breezily mentioned that the zipper on my key pouch had started to tarnish after 18 months. She immediately arranged for it to be repaired which I wasn’t expecting as it was a minor issue. This was at no further cost too. The repair failed and I was annoyed at a month long wait for it to be repaired again, so they immediately replaced it with a brand new one.

dancingbadger · 02/03/2020 14:32

Fake or real its all a bit sad really isn't it? I mean they are just clothes they don't define you as a person. I would probably judge someone covered in labels as somebody that wouldn't be on my wave length however, whether they were the genuine article or not.

Cacaca · 02/03/2020 14:34

@mnthrowaway202020 - another good point, I’ve had repairs done for free in LV either done there and then in store or once sent to Paris for a more specialised repair. My fault for overfilling the bag to the point I burst the zip

Reginabambina · 02/03/2020 14:36

I’d judge for that, but I also judge people who wear t-shirts with Gucci written on them so I’m probably not the kind of person that you are worrying about.

Ninkanink · 02/03/2020 14:36

But again, corners will wear. Even on the most expensive bags. That’s just what happens when you use them. Sure some designs will be generally much more sturdy, and if you pick carefully some will last much longer than others and look pristine for years, but with use you will see some wear, especially on the corners (and to varying degrees, depending on daily lifestyle). If it’s a small bag then it probably doesn’t have feet so you would need to be careful setting it down so that the base and/or corners don’t get damaged, for example. But tbh if I had bought a bag and it started wearing on the corners within two or three wears then it’s not fit for purpose and I would have brought it straight back. And if they had given me any hassle over replacing it I just wouldn’t buy from that brand again.

Your original question did seem to be specifically about fakes/replicas. I wouldn’t ever wear one. I’d rather pick a nice bag of the best quality I could afford, than wear a fake. But now you seem to be talking about something else altogether.

CaptainButtock · 02/03/2020 14:36

Write your own article you lazy git.

fashionistatoast · 02/03/2020 14:47

@Ninkanink well i am just engaging with what others been saying, but thank you for your opinion

SageRosemary · 02/03/2020 14:50

When you buy designer fakes you are contributing to the black economy/criminal underworld and may be financing the purchase of guns used in wars overseas where child boys are used as firing fodder and their little sisters are working in slave like conditions in sweatshop factories. Not to mention the knock on effect on the local economy when taxes are not paid thus reducing the finance available for health and education services at home.

Designer goods are obscenely priced, and much of it is tacky, the fakes are obscenely tacky.

Ninkanink · 02/03/2020 14:53

The two are very different, that’s all. Fakes and replicas are tacky, simply by virtue of not being what they’re trying to emulate. It’s rather sad to feel the need to pretend you’re carrying or wearing designer goods. And I say that as someone who loves fashion and would love nothing more than to be able to go out and buy everything pretty every time I see it. Yes I have a small selection of bags but I’ve had to save to buy them. I don’t have the money to dress head to toe in designer goods. But even if I did, I wouldn’t, because that’s tacky too, in a different way. I’d mix and match, like I do now.

Wearing dupes is totally different. If it’s the aesthetic you appreciate then it’s perfectly fine to find something more affordable that tells a similar story.

ColourMyDreams · 02/03/2020 14:55

I buy replica football tops when I go to Turkey.
Not because I can't afford the real deal, but because there is no way that I'm paying a fortune every season for something I can get for a tenner.
I don't care what anyone thinks about it.
Nor do I care if someone is wearing the real deal or fake designer stuff.

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 02/03/2020 14:58

Are you in the middle of a dissertation by any chance?

fashionistatoast · 02/03/2020 15:00

@BritneyPeedOnALadybug no, i have graduated a few years ago. why?

OP posts:
Ithinkitcouldbeme · 02/03/2020 15:15

I wouldn’t wear fakes. I’d rather wear a good quality, plain item from a high street store than something that has a designer name plastered all over it just for the sake of it

Bluntness100 · 02/03/2020 15:21

I’m curious too. For people who know you op, do you lie, try to pretend the goods are the real deal? Or do you tell them it’s knock off?

It does seem a bit desperate to be buying fake stuff to pretend it’s the real thing. Hopefully you don’t do this.

I think also you know it’s nonsense that fakes are made better than the real deal. They don’t even come close.

fashionistatoast · 02/03/2020 15:28

@Bluntness100 i don't wear items that are real fakes (like have logos etc). i gave an example of Gucci tshirt just to show how ridiculous (to me) it is to pay £400 for it. So the things i would wear are non branded but they might look like these
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bobby-Oversize-Buckle-Belt-Box-Tote-Bag-Small-Mini-Crossbody-Genuine-Leather-PU/174021271115?_trkparms=aid%3D1110002%26algo%3DSPLICE.SOI%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20200116171858%26meid%3Dad4a9a3f8d8c42e5a803e18b2e2d6f16%26pid%3D100008%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D11%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D183927382380%26itm%3D174021271115%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DPromotedSellersOtherItemsV2%26brand%3DT.H.E.&_trksid=p2047675.c100008.m2219

my friends compliment the item but we don't take about where our clothes or etc come from as they are not into fashion
but to detect that the bag i posted is fake you really need to know the trends and last minute fashion

OP posts:
gamerwidow · 02/03/2020 15:31

I wouldn’t wear counterfeit stuff but I don’t wear labels any way. If you like the item just find a similar non branded item rather than a forgery and try to pass it off as real. It seems silly to pretend things are what they are not.
I buy most of my stuff second hand off of eBay partly for environmental reasons but also because you get some really nice quality well made clothes for a fraction of the ‘new’ price. If you like labels this might be a better option. Probably the same price but better quality.

gamerwidow · 02/03/2020 15:33

Xpost. If it’s a similar design but not branded then they’re not really fakes as such anyway.

Bluntness100 · 02/03/2020 15:36

Ok so that’s a very very cheap knock off version of the boyy bag? I think you might be kidding yourself to think people would not know that’s a cheap version of a designer bag that costs about seven hundred quid plus.

coconuttelegraph · 02/03/2020 15:36

The ebay link goes to an australian item, are you in OZ? Maybe it's a cultural thing. I actually quite like that bag, I have no idea if it looks like any designer one but I'd buy that Smile

Babybel90 · 02/03/2020 15:38

Fakes - no way, as others have said it finds criminals and I just couldn’t bring myself to be involved in that.

Replicas - it depends, I really like Missoni but couldn’t afford (or fit in to probably!) their dresses but I have bought similar patterns in high street shops, obviously no one thinks I’m actually wearing Missoni though.

I live quite close to Bicester Village so I have a few designer items that I’ve got in sales, but it’s quite well known that some of the designer outlets there sell stuff that is ‘made for the outlet’ so it looks like the stuff in their other stores but is made from inferior materials.
