Hello there! Would you care about what people would think if you are wearing fakes? i am an occasional replica purchaser myself, although i do have some real things, but some accessories and clothes are hugely overpriced (i feel like it is super stupid to pay £400 pounds for a gucci tshirt). I don't feel like my friends are noticing this, but still it worries me sometimes as people tend to think a lot of things. Especially if i constantly am in the environment where everyone wears real. Would you personally care about what people think? Would you continue to buy fakes?

I would prefer to wear cheaper brands/no brands over wearing fake stuff.

MonsteraDeliciosa · 02/03/2020 13:07

@fashionistatoast you actually used the word “fakes” yourself: in the title of the thread and the first line.

I wonder then if you did actually mean fakes rather than looky-likeys and now are backtracking Confused

Anyway, I couldn’t care less what “label” I or anyone else wears.

fashionistatoast · 02/03/2020 13:08

@DropYourSword yeah i agree with that, but don't you feel like the media (especially the bloggers and celebrities) kind of make us buy more clothes and bags and shoes in order to "fit in"

DillyDilly · 02/03/2020 13:09

I get all of the points, but don't you feel like buying real stuff has no point as trends and fashion changes so fast?

If I don’t want to buy a Gucci t-shirt for whatever reason, then I don’t. I certainly don’t look for a replica t-shirt.

If you are surrounded by people who we are designer clothes and you wear replicas, then they will notice, they may not care but they will notice.

Maybe find your own individual style and shop within your budget.

Lockheart · 02/03/2020 13:09

@fashionistatoast what are you talking about? Noone "makes" you buy anything.

Geoffreythecat · 02/03/2020 13:10

Whenever threads about designer branded stuff comes up, I think of my late Dad. He used to turn supermarket carrier bags inside out and say 'they aren't getting any free advertising from me' Grin God knows what he'd make of all the heavily branded designer stuff now. And as for the fake stuff....

AnotherMurkyDay · 02/03/2020 13:10

The only things I wear with labels are the things that are better products. Eg. More comfortable, made from better materials, ethical brands etc. I wouldn't judge somebody else for wearing fakes but I'd just rather wear unbranded.

Ninkanink · 02/03/2020 13:10

I don’t buy fakes/replicas, because I care what I think about it.

Hoppinggreen · 02/03/2020 13:11

The few designer items I have are more classic rather then high fashion so neither on trend or not. Same for DD I have bought her a couple of things but they are things that are not high fashion
They are also not too obviously branded

Honeybee85 · 02/03/2020 13:11

Did you know that certain terrorist groups use the production/ sales of counterfeits to finance their activities?

Plus, I buy only the real stuff because I am interested in the quality not the brandname.

Me and my friend once met a very snooty girl with an obvious fake Michael Kors bag. We thought it was hilarious that she was pretending like she was the Queen herself whilst parading around with a fake bag trying to impress others.

Ninkanink · 02/03/2020 13:12

The designer things I have are worth the money to me, for various reasons. If I didn’t have the money I wouldn’t fake it with replicas, I’d just buy what I could afford.

Extracurricularfatigue · 02/03/2020 13:13

I wouldn’t know or care if you were wearing fake anything as I wouldn’t recognise it in the first place. I am not remotely interested and neither are any of the people whose opinions I value. I wear clothes I like from high street and online retailers and buy as little as possible for sustainability. I’m sure the argument is that this all trickles down from real fashion but I don’t care beyond the frustration that this often means shapes and material I like to wear aren’t available.

Why do you feel such pressure to worry about this stuff?

Comefromaway · 02/03/2020 13:13

no

dd buys a lot of nike, addidas and another brand i cant remember. She coudnt give two hoots about the name but finds these brands of sportswear best for serious training.

For leisurewear she wears Primark. She'd never wear a fake brand as it looks tacky, supports criminal activity and the clothes don't do the job they are meant to.

IreneWinters · 02/03/2020 13:14

Personally, I wouldn’t know a real from a fake anyway because I wouldn’t be looking closely enough to notice. If you were walking around in a T-shirt covered with Gucci branding I’d probably judge you as shallow and a bit dim because either you’re stupid enough to pay £400 for a T-shirt, or your stupid enough to want people to think you paid £400 for a T-shirt and don’t care about the ethical implications.

On the other hand, if you’re wearing a T-shirt from TopShop that is inspired by Gucci’s latest collection, firstly I wouldn’t notice because i rarely pay attention to designer fashion. Secondly, that’s how high street fashion works, surely? The big nob fashion designers decide we should all wear the ugliest things they can come up with, the high street copies it all and we all end up looking like twits in trousers that freeze our ankles and make us look like we just had a random growth spurt at the age of 45.

ArtemisOfOrtygia · 02/03/2020 13:14

I honestly don't care if someone wears fakes, it's their choice and if that makes them happy, great. I just wouldn't purchase fakes myself as I don't see the point in wearing them.

1066vegan · 02/03/2020 13:14

I wouldn't buy fake because I wouldn't want to fund criminals.

I wouldn't buy genuine "designer" stuff because it's overpriced and I wouldn't want people to think I'm the sort of person who cares about names and brands.

Everything manmade is designed by somebody. I'm happy to wear things by an anonymous designer. I'm not going to spend a fortune advertising a brand by having clothes, bags etc with their name all over it. That goes for sports brands and other mid-priced goods as it does for so-called luxury brands and designer gear.

sauvignonblancplz · 02/03/2020 13:15

@fashionistatoast
When you say that you don’t see the point in buying expensive things because fashion changes and trends change that’s where you need to realise you are becoming a slave to fast fashion & a becoming blinded by what others are doing.
Forget about what’s ‘fashionable’ and look at style!
Style never goes out of fashion , when you’ve discovered your style then it’s more than ok to invest in lovely pieces that cost a bit more.

fashionistatoast · 02/03/2020 13:15

@MonsteraDeliciosa well i only used that term as it is the most common one (so more for everyones understanding) as there are a lot of other words you can call these products if that makes sense

OP posts:
caperplips · 02/03/2020 13:15

I agree 100% with @DillyDilly.
I would never buy or wear a fake anything from clothing to bags to jewellery. It has zero interest for me.

I would notice I think because unless all the other aspect of personal presentation are up to that level (rings / bags / shoes / manicure / hair colour / hair cut / glasses etc etc) then it is obvious mostly when someone has a fake item.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 02/03/2020 13:15

You are part of a supply chain in which there's a high chance young girls and kids are being sex trafficked. Abused, raped, kept prisoner. Slaves.

Not only is your replica tacky (and to someone in the know it probably screams fake) it probably has blood on it even though you can't see it.

1066vegan · 02/03/2020 13:15

Whenever threads about designer branded stuff comes up, I think of my late Dad. He used to turn supermarket carrier bags inside out and say 'they aren't getting any free advertising from me

Good for him. He certainly had the right idea.

Honeybee85 · 02/03/2020 13:15

Op if you’re ever tempted to buy fake brand make up: watch Netflix documentary Broken, episode ‘Make up Mayhem’.

Some of these cosmetics are seriously health hazardous.

DropYourSword · 02/03/2020 13:16

but don't you feel like the media (especially the bloggers and celebrities) kind of make us buy more clothes and bags and shoes in order to "fit

Well, I think they try. That’s the entire point of advertising.
Some people care about being in fashion. I’m squarely in the “couldn’t give a shit” camp when it comes to what’s in fashion. I just like what I like.
I see it more as people who are slaves to fashion don’t actually have a deep enough confidence of what they do like themselves and have to be “told” what to like, in order to fit in.

datasgingercatspot · 02/03/2020 13:17

I wouldn't even notice if something was a fake. Although, a mate had those Chanel 'CC' earrings made custom made in Asia, however, because the real ones are not even real diamonds or gold and she had some made in real white gold with diamonds for half the price. But I'd not have known unless she told me.

Finallyatooth · 02/03/2020 13:17

I'm not particularly interested in fashion, so unless it's got a well known name plastered all over it I am unlikely to notice anyway.

I don't understand the obsession with labels. I have a couple of brands I like, but only because I like the products, not because it's a 'name'. I like some Cath Kidston stuff for example, because I like the look of the products (some of them anyway).

If I somehow found out that you were wearing a fake label I wouldn't particularly care but I would personally feel that you were maybe a bit sensitive to other peoples judgement and that you felt the need to demonstrate your worth by having named brand products.
