family discussion - Is it odd to wear shorts in winter?

saturdaynightquestion · 29/02/2020 20:51

Why do some young (and not so young) men wear shorts in winter and does this make them 'chavy' or is it odd? We need some help on our short wearing friend. Why would anyone do this when trousers are readily available?

YABU it is normal and fine to wear shorts in winter
YANBU It's odd

A few people prefer them. I don’t think it’s chavvy.

FruityWidow · 29/02/2020 20:54

I wore shorts today.

SecretWitch · 29/02/2020 20:55

My 12 yr old dd wears basketball shorts year round. She hates the feeling of her legs being encased in long pants. She rarely complains of the cold and we just let her get on with it. People should wear what they like without fear of being judged.

lljkk · 29/02/2020 20:55

oh ffs, Y do U care?

Spacetree · 29/02/2020 20:56

I wear shorts for most of the year, I prefer it.

samlovesdilys · 29/02/2020 20:56

My son wears them all year round...between constant sport, a dislike of ironing and a central boy heat WELL above mine it makes sense!!!

Lllot5 · 29/02/2020 20:58

My postman wears shorts all year. I think there’s a competition to see who can wear them the longest. Too cold for me. Brr

FemiLANGul · 29/02/2020 20:58

Controversial, I know but...

Maybe he likes wearing shorts?

isabellerossignol · 29/02/2020 20:58

Well, I'd be freezing if I wore shorts all year round, and I must admit that I do find it strange to see people standing ankle deep in snow wearing shorts and a t shirt. But as long as they don't insist that I join them...

It's always rugby types that I see doing it. I've always thought of it as quite a posh type thing, done by the sort of men who had to wear shorts to school.

BedStuy · 29/02/2020 20:58

I don't think it's "chavvy" but I am amazed at how people can have their legs totally exposed when it's BLOODY FREEZING!

I like to be warm and snug...

YouFellAsleeep · 29/02/2020 20:59

My teenage son wears shorts a lot, he's autistic and hates the way trousers feel (hates the way clothes feel in general but needs to wear something!).

HerRoyalNotness · 29/02/2020 20:59

My dad wears short shorts all the year long. My son seems to be heading the same way, just with longer shorts. He runs warm and barely wears a coat either (although our winters are warmer thank Uk to be fair)

KittenVsBox · 29/02/2020 21:00

My 8 year old is yet to volunteer to wear trousers.
He also hates jumpers, so is frequently found outside in shorts and teeshirt......

timetest · 29/02/2020 21:00

I don’t know about chavvy but it looks odd and inappropriate given the weather.

My youngest ds often wears shorts. He's a hot person & feels happier wearing less.

It's never occurred to me to consider it 'chavvy'.

My DM wears loose trousers or skirts/dresses all the time as it makes her feel claustrophic to have anything clinging to her legs. She's very elegant.

GinDrinker00 · 29/02/2020 21:02

Who even uses the word Chavy these days?

WorraLiberty · 29/02/2020 21:02

That's like asking, 'Why do women wear skirts in the Winter when trousers are readily available?' Confused

I expect it's because they want to.

emilybrontescorsett · 29/02/2020 21:02

I don't think it looks chavvy but it does make me shiver!

SansaSnark · 29/02/2020 21:03

In the south-west, it's often surfer types who wear shorts (and flip-flops) year round. I wouldn't see it as chavvy at all.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/02/2020 21:04

DS1 wears shorts or 3/4 trousers all year apart from school uniform. DS2, apart from sc uniform, would be in a sleeping bag all year if it was acceptable. Different strokes for different folks...

Luzina · 29/02/2020 21:04

As for wearing shorts, who cares. Unless someone is forcing you to wear shorts what does it matter?

I hate the word 'chavvy'

Fairylea · 29/02/2020 21:05

I don’t think it’s chavvy - unless they are purple or pink and shell suit material and accompanied by a garish baseball cap (!) - but WHY would anyone?! It’s freezing! It’s just weird.

Katinski · 29/02/2020 21:05

My postman isn't chavvy at all

mommybear1 · 29/02/2020 21:06

I've got two particular male friends who "run hot"
and literally would wear (and have worn) shorts in the snow. Each to their own I say they are doing no harm, certainly never equated shorts with chavvy Hmm
