family discussion - Is it odd to wear shorts in winter?

saturdaynightquestion · 29/02/2020 20:51

Why do some young (and not so young) men wear shorts in winter and does this make them 'chavy' or is it odd? We need some help on our short wearing friend. Why would anyone do this when trousers are readily available?

YABU it is normal and fine to wear shorts in winter
YANBU It's odd

I mainly wear shorts I don’t like trousers (well, clothes in general), today I wore sweat shorts and a thin hoody. I’m not a chav or a postman! I have to wear trousers for work, so I wear ankle grazers to wear as little trouser as possible.

BigFatLiar · 29/02/2020 21:35

Friends husband wears shorts most of the time. Makes me feel cold seeing him out in the frost/snow in shorts/sandals and t-shirt. Does wear gloves in the cold as his hands get cold, apart from his hands he doesn't seem to notice. Never seems to get colds either.

ExcessiveAdmin · 29/02/2020 21:35

I think it’s a bit chavvy to use the term chavvy.

Khione · 29/02/2020 21:37

On holiday in Australia. Temps in the high 20s and low 30s. Some people (100%male 80% young (ish)) wearing thick woolly jumpers.

Felt just as wrong weird as those wearing shorts in winter in the UK.

None of it affects me, I smile wryly and carry on in what I consider appropriate clothing

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 29/02/2020 21:53

DS2 left the house in knee length shorts, a tee shirt and a parka today.

Luckily for him he does go to a Prep School so can wear uniform shorts to school Wink.

mogtheexcellent · 29/02/2020 22:14

My autistic nephew wears shorts all year round. He hates trousers.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/02/2020 22:36

DP is a just about year round shorts wearer. He wears knee length cargo shorts and says he doesn't feel the cold.

I don't notice it apart from I'm so used to it he looks odd in full length trousers or jeans, which he will wear if very cold or if we go out in the evening.

When we go on a canaries winter sun holiday when we go out in the evening he will wear his shorts and maybe a hoodie and I'll have about 10 layers on because I'm always freezing, but I still like to sit outside bars and restaurants on holiday.

PotholeParadise · 29/02/2020 22:44

Wearing shorts in winter is sometimes an indication that the person concerned is outside in all weathers, including heavy rain and can't or won't wear waterproofs.

I would pick lovely warm (preferably lined!) trousers in freezing dry weather. However, if I had to be out in freezing cold rain without waterproofs, I'd pick shorts.

Trudging along on a cold day in trousers that are completely soaked though is one of the most miserable experiences you can have without trying to climb Kilimanjaro.

MitziK · 29/02/2020 22:49

Depends. It's perfectly normal for the following groups;

Small boys whose parents are heavily into the Prince George look.

Old ravers who last wore trousers since about 1989.

Sound engineers. It's hot work.

Gnarly old joggers.

Surfers.

Postmen. (These last few are because legs are easier to dry than full length trousers).

Those tossers blokes who have really boring admin jobs but want to be known as The Wacky One by always wearing shorts when they're with their normally dressed wife and kids at the weekend.

Nowayorhighway · 29/02/2020 22:50

I don’t think it’s ‘chavvy’. I taught a man in his sixties a couple of years ago who run to college and he often turned up in either shorts or running leggings, he definitely wasn’t chavvy Grin.

I always figure they have just been for a run or to the gym when I see it.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 29/02/2020 22:51

My postman is still wearing his shorts when doing his deliveries. We are in Yorkshire though.

faracrossthepond · 29/02/2020 22:57

@saturdaynightquestion

It does seem a bit odd, but it's up to them!

I wear sleeveless t-shirt/vests all year round, (sometimes with a cardigan sometimes not...) And if I have to hear ONE MORE fucking woman (it's always a woman, always my age or older,) tell me I need to wrap up coz I'll catch my death, or 'you must be cold!' I will go fucking loco. I am just gone 50, and don't need any fucker telling me how to dress! Hmm

I have big boobs and a good cleavage, and they're clearly jealous.

Their problem, not mine, and the men don't complain. Grin

I think that if you are someone who runs cold, it is very difficult to compute that someone else wearing three layers less than you is fine.

I sometimes find myself saying things like that to friends since I've had children, even though I honestly do try to bite my tongue. Somehow, seeing someone in a vest when my teeth are chattering in a long-sleeve top+ coat combo (real example!) makes me convinced that they will develop frostbite in front of my eyes!

Before I had children I think I just stared at these miracles of resilience to cold in silent bemusement, but now it's very hard to stop myself issuing warnings that their fingers will DROP OFF. Grin I'm honestly not jealous of their figures. Just irrationally convinced they will get a "chill in the kidneys" (whatever one of those was) at any moment!

BeroccaFiend · 29/02/2020 23:28

Two academic colleagues, one in his fifties, one in his late 20s, wear shorts all year round, the younger one with flip flops. Both wear them with spruce, well-ironed shirts. And the single richest person I know, a SA business type on his 70s, wears shorts and a polo shirt to all but the most formal occasions.

Noconceptofnormal · 29/02/2020 23:28

The people I know who wear shorts in winter are -

  1. Boys at very posh public schools
  2. Middle class male Christians
  3. Rowers

So definitely not chavvy, I would say the opposite, I've never seen that type in shorts in the winter. Bear chest in summer is, however, chavvy.

DropYourSword · 29/02/2020 23:29

People can wear whatever the fuck they want!

steff13 · 29/02/2020 23:29

I wore a denim skirt today, no tights on underneath. I get eczema on the backs of my knees, and pants tend to irritate it.

Witchend · 29/02/2020 23:42

Ds (12yo) wears shorts, even to school, all year round out of choice. I think there is one other child wearing shorts to school at the moment, but he is definitely in the minority. However there are many girls wearing skirts (with socks) so what's the difference?

It's a struggle to get him to put a jacket on even when it's freezing, so I don't really worry about the shorts. He's more comfortable like that and has never complained at being cold.

LuckyLickitung · 29/02/2020 23:58

DS only wears shorts (autism/ sensory issues) and in the last 3 years has only worn trousers for the absolute minimum time for two school visits to places of worship. It's almost a game to see how many camping trips he can go on and still come back wih the tags on the token pair of jogging bottoms Grin

It's not chavvy at all, and tends to be a smarter look on boys. I do tend to spot men in shorts now and it's not that uncommon. Most tend to have the surfer, outdoors look if it's casual wear.

Personally, I like merino wool long johns under my trousers. When we stood in a thermal imaging camera at the science museum, DS glowed hotter than me and his brother, so he is genuinely warmer. He is pretty good at hats, coats and gloves and rarely complains about the cold, not that he'd get much sympathy if he ignored warnings.

ActualHornist · 01/03/2020 00:04

It’s not chavvy Confused

There’s a young man I see most days, I think he has a walk to the local shop for milk and bread. I have never seen him wearing more than shorts, t-shirt and flip flops.

isittheholidaysyet · 01/03/2020 00:08

Yanbu

It's ridiculous and freezing.

However 15 year old DS has worn shorts constantly for the past 4 years. He's home educated so doesn't have to wear school uniform. He wears joggers for occasional ice skating trips, a smart pair of trousers for scout parades. And very occasionally the joggers appear for other things.

He just gets really hot, all the time. He also doesn't wear jumpers.

He has just started to realise that as a man-sized person with big hairy legs, it's not always appropriate to wear shorts. If he is doing something at church, (rather than just sitting in the congregation), or attending a wedding/baptism/funeral, he will now wear trousers.

SnapAndFartAllDayLong · 01/03/2020 00:10

No matter what primary school you go to there's always 1 dad in shorts all year round. 3 dc and 4 primary schools have all had this dad. It must be law lol

Ginfordinner · 01/03/2020 00:11

A lot of well 'ard people on here Grin

It has been 3 degrees here, sunny and with a biting cold wind. Most definitely not shorts weather.

BritWifeinUSA · 01/03/2020 01:53

My husband wears shorts all year round. Many men do here.
