family discussion - Is it odd to wear shorts in winter?

saturdaynightquestion · 29/02/2020 20:51

Why do some young (and not so young) men wear shorts in winter and does this make them 'chavy' or is it odd? We need some help on our short wearing friend. Why would anyone do this when trousers are readily available?

YABU it is normal and fine to wear shorts in winter
YANBU It's odd

What does chavvy mean? A lower class than you?

saturdaynightquestion · 29/02/2020 21:07

I am a Mancunian displaced in Yorkshire - fuck me if I know what any of it means. Thanks for taking the time to respond

saturdaynightquestion · 29/02/2020 21:08

Not for exercise - just for general going out

My brother in law has Raynaud's and wears shorts year round but keeps his top well wrapped. Apparently his legs get unbearably itchy and hot.

Each to their own. And tbh legs don't really get cold, especially when walking around.

iMoan7 · 29/02/2020 21:14

I don’t think it’s chavvy. There are some wee boys (5-6 years old) in DD’s class at school who wear them to school when it’s 0 degrees and icy outside though. I don’t get that it looks bloody freezing but each to their own I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

SquirmOfEels · 29/02/2020 21:15

The poshest preps round here keeps boys in shorts year-round until about age 8

Maybe it engrains such a liking in done alumni that they keep going?

saturdaynightquestion · 29/02/2020 21:17

Yes, dh mentioned poshos. I don't want to cause offence thou

Why would it be chavvy? I'm old and when I grew up, primary school aged boys routinely wore short trousers in the winter with knee-length woolly socks.

User721 · 29/02/2020 21:19

About a third of the boys at my child's primary school wear shorts all year round

Shorts on young boys is a class marker. Certainly not chavvy!

My postie says that the rain and wet makes trousers really uncomfortable after a while as they rub against legs so that’s why so many of them wear shorts all year round. I’m sure a PP is right about it being a competition as well.

I’d be much too cold in shorts in the winter but lots of people seem immune to the cold weather.

MarchDaffs · 29/02/2020 21:23

Some people have a sensory thing. My friend's cousin is like this.

PinkBuffalo · 29/02/2020 21:25

I am a woman and I am in shorts nearly all the time when i am not at work. In fact I only changed into jeans later today and people have actually commented that they have never seen me in trousers (although I do wear black trousers at work)
Like PP son, I have a LOT of sensory problems and it feels nicer? I do not know how to explain it. Although some days I do get frozen (like this morning when I got caught out in the freezing storm in my shorts) and then I sometimes have to get changed to get warm. It helps I spend a lot of time doing classes at my gym, so shorts are not that weird really.

Largeyellowdaffodil · 29/02/2020 21:26

It is the opposite- very prep school surely?

TooGood2BeTrue · 29/02/2020 21:28

One of the dads at our school wears shorts with a puffa jacket and a bobble hat. I find it very odd...

FrogsFrogs · 29/02/2020 21:28

Some people run hot or feel uncomfortable.

I don't think it's a fashion thing but a matter of preference.

saturdaynightquestion · 29/02/2020 21:29

yes, shorts with a big coat and a hat. WTF is it all about MN?

sunshineANDsweetpeas · 29/02/2020 21:30

My dh wears shorts all the time, he's 55

PinkBuffalo · 29/02/2020 21:33

toogood I am in a woolly hat whenever I am out too! Just realised eeveryone must be judging me as I walk out and about Grin
I decided I am a total chav, so OP must be right Grin
As long as I am comfortable I am not that worried

ByeMF · 29/02/2020 21:33

Well what an absolute charmer you are OP. My son wears shorts all year round. He is autistic and has sensory issues. So great that people like you are judging him as being 'chavvy', which in itself is a pretty offensive label.
Do you ever stop to consider other people might have different experiences to you?
