family discussion - Is it odd to wear shorts in winter?

saturdaynightquestion · 29/02/2020 20:51

Why do some young (and not so young) men wear shorts in winter and does this make them 'chavy' or is it odd? We need some help on our short wearing friend. Why would anyone do this when trousers are readily available?

YABU it is normal and fine to wear shorts in winter
YANBU It's odd

I had a neighbour once that wore shorts all year round. Thought it was a bit odd tbh when I used to go out looking like I was dressed for living in the Arctic, but hey ho... each to their own 🤷🏼‍♀️

What was stranger...was my ex-partners father turning up to support him during our family court hearings. In fucking shorts! Confused

Never quite did get my head around that one but upon reflection...glad I'm no longer part of that family! Grin

When I first met my husband he wore shorts pretty much all the time, he was far from chavvy... he just didn’t feel the cold very much!
Now however he’s the first to put the heating on and is always cold!

DS6 went to school in shorts this week, his choice 🤷‍♀️

The Postie thing makes sense now I have read it, our Postie often wears shorts too.

I saw a man (prob late 50’s) walking yesterday in shorts and sandals (no socks) that seemed a bit extreme but I have see. Him before dressed the same.

It’s definitely not chavvy though, trackie pants (with a baggy crotch area) on the school run when you are not off to do exercise now that’s chavvy. 😂

We live in Sydney, lots of people wear shorts all year round even though we do actually have a couple of cold months. In some of the beachside suburbs some guys think shoes are an optional extra in Winter as well, I couldn’t do it personally and really don’t care less how other people choose to dress but it is slightly odd to be in a venue sometimes with some people in shorts and t-shirts and others with scarves and boots 😊

emilybrontescorsett · 01/03/2020 07:42

There are of course smart stylish shorts and ones that are more errrrrr chavvy for want of a better word.

happycamper11 · 01/03/2020 07:44

My dd and some of her friends wear shorts all year round. Are girls included in this discussion? She wears them because she likes them better than trousers

happycamper11 · 01/03/2020 07:50

Also there is definitely nothing chavvy about her formal school shorts along with her uniform and basic denim shorts with a t shirt and jumper or whatever that she wears with them at the weekend don't enter that category either. As someone with a circulation disorder which means I'm always freezing I think she's mad but then she doesn't have it

happycamper11 · 01/03/2020 07:52

yes, shorts with a big coat and a hat. WTF is it all about MN?

Because if your core is warm the. The rest of you will likely follow suit, covered or not

Saisong · 01/03/2020 08:01

My 13yo DD lives in shorts, and she is definately not 'chavvy', just comfortable - as she sees it.

She has one pair of trousers which she wears only under duress. And she has to wear a skirt to school - which is apparently a more acceptable option than the trousers.

OneStepSideways · 01/03/2020 08:07

If the person is doing sports eg dressed for running/cycling/hiking/active job like postman then no I don’t think it’s odd.

If they’re wearing them without looking like they’re off to a sports event I think it looks odd and attention seeking. I see lots of young women shivering in shorts on my commute, it looks like they’re trying to be noticed.

I think shorts are for the beach, holidays, summer weekends not when it’s freezing outside!

OneStepSideways · 01/03/2020 08:10

Also my 5 year old would happily wear shorts if we let her, but we don’t. Not until it’s around 18degrees or higher.
She wears thermal leggings or joggers until end of April!

happycamper11 · 01/03/2020 08:19

I can assure you my 10 yo DD is not attention seeking @OneStepSideways. Also forcing a child in to thermal tights regardless of the weather (sometimes there are very hot days in March) just because you feel cold is not something I'd do. Dd2 will ask for leggings for school in November some time (she can't bear tights so wears leggings under her dress (often summer dresses as that's her favourite) but DD1 is happier in shorts. She knows if she's cold or not

It's a British treotype here that if there is sunshine (even with snow on the ground) Brits have their legs out.

I have to say that someone wearing shorts/sandals/no jacket does make me roll my eyes but then I move on with my life.

Streamingbannersofdawn · 01/03/2020 08:36

😁 middle class male Christians.

My son wears shorts to the extent that he doesn't own a pair of trousers. Sensory issues. He refuses a coat as well but he dies have one.

If he has trousers on...it's snowing and we are going sledging!

Pringlesonthetable · 01/03/2020 08:37

The matron at my eldest sons prep school years ago said shorts are more practical for active little boys, that they go through the knees of trousers too much and learn not to go rough on their knees when it is skin! They wore cord lined longish shorts and thick knee high socks, only the knee was exposed. DS2 at state junior school went through knees of trousers on a regular basis so, yes, she had a point.

emilybrontescorsett · 01/03/2020 09:29

I've never worked anywhere where shorts are permitted.
They are definately more casual the same as flip flops or vests.

emilybrontescorsett · 01/03/2020 09:31

A few years ago it was trendy for young men and teenagers to wear shorts, flip flops, sweater and wolley hat in the middle of winter.

Iwantacookie · 01/03/2020 10:07

Maybe because they're just going to the gym? Saying that one of the dads from the school is always in shorts mainly because hes either just coming back from or going to the gym. It become a running joke up the school "turn the heating up today James is in trousers"

Smartanimal · 01/03/2020 10:12

The English are infamous at not dressing up properly in wintertime. I see this in children too and shudder. Tiny toddler sleeping in a buggy in 2 degrees outside with only socks on, a jumper and trousers. No jacket, gloves and shoes on him. Shame on the parents.

We need some help on our short wearing friend.

Why do you need help?!
