Coil fitting- AIBUIA? (Don’t read if you’re getting one soon)

Am I being unreasonably in agony?

I’ve had a copper coil fitted before and it was fine, not much worse than a smear.

Today I had a mirena fitted and it was proper agony, worse than giving birth without any drugs (although thankfully shorter). I couldn’t help screaming in pain, it was absolutely shocking. I then fainted.

Just wondered if anyone had experienced this? Can’t work out why it was so painful- my gynaecologist is great so am sure she did a good job. She removed a small polyp just before- could that account for it?

Would also like to say a quick eff off to the man in the waiting room where the nurse took me afterwards to have a cup of tea, who kept saying “was that you screaming? What were you up to in there? We could hear down the street!”

First of all, I'd be complaining about being taken to the waiting room to recover. Given how I felt after it happened to me I'd have likely told that man, rather loudly, to mind his own fucking business.
I went through this agony because at the time the doctor was trying to fit the mirena I hadn't had a child and he was trying to do a lot of "stretching". I was screaming for him to stop it, stop, stop and the nurse who was present intervened and told him to stop. I also fainted.

I found it somewhat painful, but nothing like that bad. Are you sure they didn't perforate your uterus? As I understand it, that's the big risk with having a coil fitted (although am not a medical professional) Are you still in pain? Can you feel the strings?

Thank you, both. Feeling a lot better now but in bed. I don’t think it can have perforated my uterus or I’d be bleeding much more, I think. Can’t bear to think of checking the strings right now, makes me feel a bit faint.

Gargh, I thought it would be a breeze again. So odd that it was so different.

I’m really sorry that it was so grim. Did they advise you to take paracetamol an hour before? I think it’s different for everyone though, it sounds like yours was extreme.

Everyone is different, some women don’t even seem to notice you doing it and others scream the place down but still want you to carry on. I suspect the area was more sensitive as the polyp has just been removed. Fainting happens because of the weird nerve supply the cervix has. If your pain has settled and things are much better then some analgesia will help any cramping.

My first attempt at a fitting was so painful l was slapping the wall and howling. The nurse had to stop after 20 minutes of this torture. She couldn’t fit it.
I was referred to hospital and they gave me a local injection, l felt nothing, l saw nothing and it was fitted in 3 minutes.
I am now so glad l have it, totally changed my life as l have adenomyosis and profuse bleeding. No bleeding for me anymore!

It was like this for me and I fainted and was sick after!
I've always said that I imagine it was as painful as contractions and I know have a 5 month old and I definitely think having the coil was worth!
I ended up having it removed after around about 6-8 months as I kept getting contraction like pains too! When I went to check the fit everything was fine and no-one could understand why it was causing me so much pain.
I feel like my body didn't want it in there and was trying to get rid of it... hence the contracting pains! Although, I've never read anything of the sort and just felt like that! I had the mirena too.

I had one of these that was very very painful too, it turned out that the bitch lady who fitted it had pushed it through the wall of my uterus and it went walkabout and had to be removed surgically . Never had one since . Awful things

@Brian9600 I am sorry you are suffering, but I have to say that hell will freeze over before I ever get a coil fitted. Sod that.

I've had two and honestly didn't feel that either were painful. Uncomfortable possibly but I guess that goes with the territory of having a stranger having a dig around inside of you. I would really consider getting it checked perhaps. Better safe than sorry

My first coil - no problem - after birth of son no. 2 - no pain as the channel was open so to speak.

Trying to get it re-fitted. The doctor must have been trying for about 20 mins and had to admit defeat. It was not a pleasant experience but not screaming in agony painful so something doesn't sound right with your treatment.

I would never have had a coil fitted. Would rather not ever have sex.

I had one fitted painfully it was never comfortable and ended up expelling itself after 5/6months

Had another one since and it’s fine and I had two before that all fine lasted ten years each

I was practically off the bed clenching my bum in reaction to the pain. The dr had to stop and I had a nurse holding my hand and talking me through it.

I'm not looking forward to the next one in 4.5 years.

Wonder if you had a vasovagal reaction. I tried having one fitted years ago before kids and it was unsuccessful and awful and I fainted after getting a massive vasovagal reaction.

Had Kyleena inserted a few months ago and it was really sore because of my episiotomy scar tissue but the actual insertion through the cervix was fine just stingy.

I've had two fitted. The first time was excruciating. The second time I went to a local family planning clinic as I figured they were used to fitting coils frequently. I told the doctor there how painful the first fitting was and she gave me an injection of local anaesthetic before inserting it. It was mildly uncomfortable only. (the first time was extremely painful, with lots of rummaging around by the male GP) She then checked on an ultrasound machine that the coil was correctly placed and showed me it was. She also advised I might feel a bit light headed and told me to stay out on the bed for a while until I was sure I felt ok. I was fine. I wouldn't go anywhere else but a family planning/sexual health clinic now and always ask for a local anaesthetic.

I had my 3rd and last Mirena fitted last year, I found the fitting really painful too

God this isn't the first horror story I've heard about these. I'd never get one. I can barely cope with smears which are, if anything, worse since I've had kids!

Jesus id never get one anyway as a close family member has always made me promise her I wouldn't after it made her infertile and she nearly died , but this thread would be enough to put me off .

I have had 5, first two were sore, I have since asked for local which makes it much more bearable.

I had the most painful fitting for my first coil by a nurse at the doctors. It took her 3 attempts and I was almost crawling off the bed with agony afterwards. Almost fainted so had to lie down for an age. Stumbled home and passed out in bed from the pain which was basically like labour contractions.
So bad I asked to be referee to hospital to have it fitted this time and had a local anaesthetic and was over and they changed it over in about a minute. She also did my smear at the same time! Was a much much better experience!
Sorry to hear that you end through it too and it is awful you were out in the waiting room and that man is a dick!
