Coil fitting- AIBUIA? (Don’t read if you’re getting one soon)

Am I being unreasonably in agony?

I’ve had a copper coil fitted before and it was fine, not much worse than a smear.

Today I had a mirena fitted and it was proper agony, worse than giving birth without any drugs (although thankfully shorter). I couldn’t help screaming in pain, it was absolutely shocking. I then fainted.

Just wondered if anyone had experienced this? Can’t work out why it was so painful- my gynaecologist is great so am sure she did a good job. She removed a small polyp just before- could that account for it?

Would also like to say a quick eff off to the man in the waiting room where the nurse took me afterwards to have a cup of tea, who kept saying “was that you screaming? What were you up to in there? We could hear down the street!” Angry

It was quite uncomfortable but not terrible. There was a lot more cramping after than I expected, for a day or two. And no periods since so was totally worth it!

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 28/02/2020 18:10

I never had more than a pinch/scratch with both my insertions. Sadly my body decided they weren't fit for purpose after 4 months and expelled them.

Some of these stories are really awful.

Sorry this caused you so much pain OP. YWBVU not to tell that man to fuck off though.

Growingboys · 28/02/2020 18:11

I've had two fitted without paracetamol and both were uncomfortable but I'd never have squeaked, let alone screamed!

Must have been to do with the polyp.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 28/02/2020 18:11

I've had no kids so yeah the first one was quite a surprise. Might have let a teeny scream out Grin. Dr thanked me for clearing her waiting room.

Second not so bad - getting another this summer. Its so quick - well worth the pain for 5 yrs of next to no periods and no babies.

Likethebattle · 28/02/2020 18:12

I have heard other similar stories and refuse point blank to ever think of one. I no longer use birth control as we failed to conceive so there’s no point but I’d rather stay on the pill than ever have an implant or a coil!

Ulysses · 28/02/2020 18:13

I don't recall is being that painful when I got my first one fitted at the beginning of last year. However, my strings disappeared and it's likely it fell out at some point. My consultant fitted another one a few weeks ago and oh boy that was so much more painful and seem to take much longer (maybe cause the first one fell out!). The nurse saw that I was struggling and told me to take deep breaths.

Afterwards on the journey home I met my friend and explained that the horrendous pain I was in and that it felt like contractions and wish I had asked for gas and air beforehand. It was all so very vivid.

Flufferbum · 28/02/2020 18:15

I was thinking about getting the coil but will absolutely fuxking not be after this thread 😭🤢 I’m so sorry OP it sounds just awful

FallingApartNC · 28/02/2020 18:16

The first attempt at fitting mine was done by a stupid doctor who didn't know what she was doing and I almost yanked the radiator I was gripping, off the wall with the pain. She then read the printed out instructions and was going to try again. I have never got dressed and left a room so fast!
Second attempt by a nurse who did them daily and it was painless and over in seconds.

ClientQueen · 28/02/2020 18:17

I had one that was fine, one that was painful and then the last one which was crampy but ok until bizarrely I went white, dropped blood pressure and nearly threw up everywhere. Never happened before and they stuck a fan on and dropped the head of the bed and I was ok after about 15 mins

Topseyt · 28/02/2020 18:17

I think that treatment sounds awful, and I am so sorry you went through that. Also, why on earth did they put you in the waiting room to recover? Surely you needed the privacy of one of the consulting rooms? The twat man who commented should have been asked to leave the area if he couldn't shut the fuck up!

Mine was fitted under general anaesthetic during a hysteroscopy so I didn't have any pain when it was inserted, but I have had bleeding on most days since and it was almost three months ago, with low mood and permanent PMS. I am seriously considering getting it removed.

I hope you are not in pain now and that things settle down well for you.

Buddha123 · 28/02/2020 18:17

My 2nd one was horrendous, the removal of the 1st one took ages as one of the strings had disappeared up inside and the other was barely visible. She then made 3 attempts to insert the new one, well the pain was like someone inserting a knife into me on the last attempt, never ever again!! I was an hour and a half in the room as I was so weak after and there was blood all over the bed, it looked like someone had been butchered. So I completely understand where you are coming from, mind you I didn't scream but I wasn't far off it!

Guacamole · 28/02/2020 18:18

I would never have had a coil fitted. Would rather not ever have sex.

This ^^ Shock

ClientQueen · 28/02/2020 18:18

Oh and I had local anaesthetic gel with all 3. No DC so my cervix is a bit more tricky

Singinghollybob · 28/02/2020 18:21

That sounds utterly horrendous sorry OP.

I've had a couple of copper coils and they're usually quite painful but the last one was a lot worse. Not on the level of fainting though. The nurse struggled and struggled and it was taking longer than usual. In the end it was too painful and she couldnt get it. I was then referred to a doctor at the same clinic who gave me a local anaesthetic. That made it easier, in dreading g getting g it renewed and I hope they give me another local.

chloechloe · 28/02/2020 18:21

Gosh the stories in this thread sound awful, I’m glad I never read it before having mine!

I had mine put in after DC3 by my lovely gynecologist and I literally just felt a small scratch on my uterus. I was doing the deep breathing exercises learnt in hypnobirthing though which I think helped. She did offer me a local anaesthetic but I refused it seeing as I’d got through childbirth without anything. Her assistant was surprised at how calm I was so I guess they’re used to women struggling when they’re put in.

I hope you’re feeling better now. The only bad point for me was feeling really hormonal the next day, but I guess that’s no surprise when they’ve been rummaging around up there!

CookPassBabtridge · 28/02/2020 18:22

I have so much respect for women and how much torture is gone through with our bits. Sorry you went through that OP. I decided in my early 20s when the pill changed my personality that I would never have any hormonal contraception again, or anything inserted into me. Condoms all the way.

Singinghollybob · 28/02/2020 18:23

The whole thought of it does make me feel very queasy and even now it's in I dont like the idea of it but it's been very convenient for me (well other than the time they think it caused a pelvic infection leading to a 9 day stay in hospital and a loss of a fallopian tube, but that's another story).

Reginabambina · 28/02/2020 18:25

Did you have your first one fitted no long after childbirth? I did and it wasn’t even particularly uncomfortable. The nurse said that that’s pretty common.

blackteaplease · 28/02/2020 18:26

Those of you saying you would never have one - mine isnt required for contraception. I have horrendous periods and the coil was the last resort after 3 years of trialling various pills. I was basically staying home two days a month so whilst the fitting was agony it was worth it in the long run.

AdoptAdaptImprove · 28/02/2020 18:27

I had one fitted with a little polyp removed just before so I’d had a shot of local anaesthetic, and it was still painful. By day three I was in absolute agony, way worse than my horrendous periods, and my body was trying to expel it, so I went back to my gynae clinic and made them take it out. Horrible experience.

Sunshineand · 28/02/2020 18:27

My consultant fitted another one a few weeks ago and oh boy that was so much more painful and seem to take much longer (maybe cause the first one fell out!)..

Eek, I'd be careful if I were you. My first coil partially came out ( was scanned 6 weeks after having it inserted and it had moved into the wrong position). Stupidly had a second one inserted and it expelled itself. I didn't think it would happen twice. Proceed with caution unless you want babies Shock

Sunshineand · 28/02/2020 18:28

But to answer the OP, no it wasn't painful.

YWNBU to tell waiting room guy to fuck off.

ColourMyDreams · 28/02/2020 18:30

I've had three fitted over the years.
The first one was fitted with a local anaesthetic injected into my cervix.
The second was done via an epidural.
The third was done under general anaesthetic.
They advised me to take ibuprofen prior to having the first one fitted. I might as well have eaten a tomato!
I love my mirena due to it stopping my heavy bleeding, but hell will freeze over before I have it done without anaesthesia.

PositiveLife · 28/02/2020 18:31

I've had 2 mirena fit. First one I hardly noticed. Second one hurt and I passed out. Same doctor fit both 🤷‍♀️ no idea what the difference was

mrsjg · 28/02/2020 18:33

I had my 3rd one fitted in December and it's is without doubt the worst pain I have ever experienced. The nurse said that this procedure is painful because ds was born by emergency c-section, so my cervix hasn't naturally softened and stretched by childbirth. Even using gas and air I too was screaming in pain. There was a possibility that if it was too much trouble the consultant was prepared to do it under GA. I've found that the pain has got worse with each new coil.

The only upside is that this one will be definitely be my last as I'll be 53 when it comes out.

I'm getting the threads checked on Monday and I'm not looking forward to that. Even having a smear is painful for me
