Coil fitting- AIBUIA? (Don’t read if you’re getting one soon)

Am I being unreasonably in agony?

I’ve had a copper coil fitted before and it was fine, not much worse than a smear.

Today I had a mirena fitted and it was proper agony, worse than giving birth without any drugs (although thankfully shorter). I couldn’t help screaming in pain, it was absolutely shocking. I then fainted.

Just wondered if anyone had experienced this? Can’t work out why it was so painful- my gynaecologist is great so am sure she did a good job. She removed a small polyp just before- could that account for it?

Would also like to say a quick eff off to the man in the waiting room where the nurse took me afterwards to have a cup of tea, who kept saying “was that you screaming? What were you up to in there? We could hear down the street!” Angry

My first was ok going in but I basically went into labour on the way home and 'gave birth' to it once I got home.
My second one stayed in but I had really painful cramps for several days afterwards. Then two solid years of spotting before I had it removed.

Intelinside57 · 28/02/2020 18:35

There have been threads about this before. I think for most it's quite bearable or a bit painful. People talk about taking paracetamol before going to the doctor, for me that wouldn't have touched the sides. Grin
In my case it was to see if it would help with menstrual migraines, but I didn't go back for a second try.

Watsername · 28/02/2020 18:35

1st was fine, 2nd was OK (done when having a camera up there for something else) and 3rd was excruciating. I was told it was because I have a retroverted (tilted) uterus.

PumpkinP · 28/02/2020 18:36

This is why I could never get one fitted. I have always heard how painful it is and I’m a wuss, like pp said I would rather just not have sex!

jackparlabane · 28/02/2020 18:39

It can depend on where you are in your cycle and exactly how it gets slid through your cervix.
My most recent one, they asked if a doc could be trained on me so I went through the 'can you cough? Now!' bit a dozen times until the newbie thought she could get it in. A couple minor ouchy prods but on the whole it was another nice lie down mid-afternoon.

BlueSkyBurningBright · 28/02/2020 18:40

I did not find the fitting very painful, a bit uncomfortable that is all.

Though a few years later I realised that the strings had disappeared. When I wanted it taken out the doctor could not find it. I had to go to the hospital and see the gynaecologist. She suggested we have a go at getting it out without anaesthetic. That was as close to the pain of childbirth I have ever experienced. Chose not to have another fitted.

museumum · 28/02/2020 18:42

I’ve only had one fitted but it wasn’t sore at all. Uncomfortable but not sore.
Bit of period aim like cramping after then all good.

confusedbyopk · 28/02/2020 18:43

I leave heard so many horror stories about these things, I can't imagine how so many people get talked into using them? There's no way I'd want to experience that. If it were done to a man there's by gas and air at least

MarchSurprise · 28/02/2020 18:45

My coil was painful and I can't wait to get it removed, I'm not sure it's in the correct place anyway but I'm scared. Is it as painful getting it removed as it was fitted?

Winterwoollies · 28/02/2020 18:45

I’ve had three fitted and haven’t experienced anything like this before. My last one went walkies so I had to have it out in hospital. The wonderful consultant found it without alerting me and so hoiked it out. She said it was best not to tell me as the anticipation is worse! It made me jump but it wasn’t that bad.

I’m sorry you had an uncomfortable experience. See how it goes now in your recovery. They may want to scan to check it’s in the right spot.

I’ve heard very mixed results in how people find the Mirena. I loved it. Slightly more painful period cramps as they’d clench around it but apart from that, it was brilliant.

Fainting is really common apparently. It’s the vasovagal response. The nurses all gathered to check I wasn’t going to go after mine was pulled out. I was so delighted it was over I was ok.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 28/02/2020 18:46

I find it strange that people don’t think this procedure is going to be uncomfortable/painful for some.

Your manually inserting an object into your body that your body is naturally going to object.

I don’t wish anyone to be in pain, however it’s always surprising to me that people don’t acknowledge/ understand this.

datasgingercatspot · 28/02/2020 18:48

OUCH! I hope it all settles soon.

raspberryk · 28/02/2020 18:53

I had one pre kids and one post kids and it wasn't anything like some of you have described, just uncomfortable.

PatchworkElmer · 28/02/2020 18:53

Mine was fine going in (no worse than a smear) but I immediately felt I was going to faint, and then experienced labour-like pains for a couple of hours. It was grim.

MsJudgemental · 28/02/2020 18:54

Mine is stuck. There was an attempt at the doctor's which failed to remove it as I was screaming in agony, then an internal scan and finally I've had a camera shoved up there at the hospital which also failed as it was exactly like being in labour. Apparently, I have a 'very sensitive uterus' and I'm now having to wait for an appointment for a general anaesthetic to get it out. Nightmare.

Bluetrews25 · 28/02/2020 18:59
  • @Topseyt* - I bled every day, varying amounts, for 3 months after first one, but then it really worked and reduced my bleeding greatly. They warned me before fitting that you needed to allow 12 weeks before you judged it. Removal was fine, but insertion of the second one was not very nice. Understatement. But was worth it.
EmbarrassingMama · 28/02/2020 19:02

It may have perforated your uterus. This just happened to me. Ask for an ultrasound to check the placement. If that has happened it’s not the end of the world so don’t panic. Good luck, and hope you’re feeling okay now.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 28/02/2020 19:03

I had a mirena fitted before I had a baby and the pain was unholy- far worse than giving birth with no drugs later was. I didn’t scream or faint but the nurse did comment that I had “gone green” and I don’t remember how I got out of the doctors and onto the street, I only know that I did and sat down on a nearby bench where I rang my partner and asked him to come and get me. Our flat was literally at the end of the same (long) road so I had walked there expecting to be able to walk back.

The next 12hrs I was just laid in bed on naproxen (thankfully my partner had some left from when he broke his ankle!) with a hot water bottle, although the pain went the next day.

I’ve had both a copper and mirena fitted again since having children and hardly felt either. So my experience would be to not have one put in pre kids, but that post giving birth is okay.

Hope you feel better soon!

PanamaPattie · 28/02/2020 19:03

"How about a coil" says the GP when I asked about a vasectomy for DH. How about "fuck" and "no" were my immediate thoughts. Looks like I was right. 🤢🤢

borntobequiet · 28/02/2020 19:26

I had mine inserted under GA because the pain was unbearable otherwise. I’ve had two vaginal births but also a cone biopsy which left me bleeding for months and a lot of scar tissue, hence the pain. Menstrual cramps are worse with the coil - I can feel it - but the advantage of hardly bleeding at all outweighs the cramps.

Gatekeeper · 28/02/2020 19:36

I was ok getting the coil in but the last one I had removed was awful...my uterus went into spasms and I went into a half faint- had to lie for ages afterwards with my legs up and sip lucozade until I could get up without falling over

pickletickled · 28/02/2020 19:36

Oh ouch OP, that sounds horrific, barbaric even!
I've never fancied having a coil after my neighbour told me she was torn and had to be stitched while having one fitted years ago (She'd had 5 dc so it shouldn't have been much of a problem to pop in)
I've not been stitched after birthing dc so didn't really fancy that risk. I definitely don't even more now.
It could be because of the polyp removal.
I had quite a large one removed last year during a colposcopy appointment to take a biopsy.
''Oh I'll just whip that off for you quickly'' said the Gynaecologist.
Whip off! and quickly! didn't happen.
The little bastard didn't want to be removed and held tight until it finally succumbed to what felt like the 1 millionth twist of the pincers, and came out leaving a split in my cervix (remember ^ I said i survived births with zero stitches - I got some this day ffs)
I digress
That in itself knocked me sick and shaky OP the twiddling, twisting and pulling but after that you've had something forced through your cervix as well.
If the pain and/or bleeding persist you need to be checked over.
Take care

MontanaSky · 28/02/2020 19:41

I had mine fitted on Tuesday. The senior nurse whilst fantastic, wasn't able to get it further than 4! The Consultant was then called who then managed it.
It wasn't painful as such but certainly tender and I did have some cramping afterwards.
From Wednesday onwards I've felt fine with no pain at all

sindylouwho · 28/02/2020 19:55

I had a coil fitted three years ago. I took ibuprofen before and it wasn't really painful at all. Felt like having a smear. Not even that bad. I have had a baby though. Went to get it removed and I nearly passed out. Another nurse tried and I nearly passed out again so they stopped and referred me to gynae at hospital. Scanned me to check it was fine and in place. It was and the gynae took it out no problem but I went faint again. Felt like a right tool! But I loved my mirena.

Mummug · 28/02/2020 19:56

Worst pain of my life and I had a 3 day agonising labour with my DD. I also discovered that I have a retroverted (tilted) uterus so unsure if there is a correlation? It was excruciating getting it fitted.
Glad to have it out - made no difference whatsoever to my heavy bleeding (the reason I got it fitted), so it was all completely unnecessary. My sympathies. What a dickhead in the waiting room too :-(
