Coil fitting- AIBUIA? (Don’t read if you’re getting one soon)

Am I being unreasonably in agony?

I’ve had a copper coil fitted before and it was fine, not much worse than a smear.

Today I had a mirena fitted and it was proper agony, worse than giving birth without any drugs (although thankfully shorter). I couldn’t help screaming in pain, it was absolutely shocking. I then fainted.

Just wondered if anyone had experienced this? Can’t work out why it was so painful- my gynaecologist is great so am sure she did a good job. She removed a small polyp just before- could that account for it?

Would also like to say a quick eff off to the man in the waiting room where the nurse took me afterwards to have a cup of tea, who kept saying “was that you screaming? What were you up to in there? We could hear down the street!” Angry

Mirena fitting as tricky, something to do with not having dc so my cervix wouldn’t co-operate. I nearly went backwards out the bloody window when she broke the first one! Not pretty, but worth it for the lack of period pain.

Just had it taken out last week, it had expired and was causing the DH issues so the nurse/doctor whipped it out. Didn’t feel a thing.

IndieTara · 28/02/2020 20:02

Mirena was the only coil I've ever had and had never been pregnant either. They gave me a muscle relaxant first.which helped but it was really unpleasant.
Afterwards I had contractions for 24 hours

LakieLady · 28/02/2020 20:13

The first time I had one fitted, the opening to my cervix wasn't accessible and the doctor had to give it a bit of a tug to get to it.

It hurt so much I fainted, and burned my foot on the bulb of the lamp at the end of the couch. I was rather disappointed when I came round and found that they hadn't fitted it while I was out cold.

And I'd cycled to the family planning clinc, but there was no way I could face any saddle contact, so I had to ask my mate to get her DH to come and pick me and my bike up in his van.

In my naivety, I'd sort of thought it would be a bit like popping in a tampon. What an idiot.

MozzchopsThirty · 28/02/2020 20:13

I have mine done under GA
It's fucking hideous otherwise

Twirlsandswirls1 · 28/02/2020 20:14

Had 1st fitted at doctors before my son. It was awful. Very painful. I bled alot straight after and I also fainted. Only had it in 2 weeks and I remember going to the gum clinic and asking them to remove it as it was so painful. The nurse tried to remove it and I was in so so much pain.

2nd time was the family planning clinic after my son. Didn't feel nothing. Felt fine after. Only thing was it caused me to bleed so heavy I was anemic. So had it taken out.

I have re-registered with MN just to post this petition End barbaric NHS hysteroscopies with inadequate pain-relief

Please sign it. In my experience, coil fitting is as barbaric as a hysteroscopy without adequate pain relief and should be done only under GA.

MozzchopsThirty · 28/02/2020 20:17

@InArrears totally agree
My gynaecologist does my mirena & hysteroscopy under GA

It makes for a rather nice day out Grin

fairlygoodmother · 28/02/2020 20:17

I had two - the first one was agony afterwards and I had to sit in the waiting room for about an hour before I could stagger home. The second one was a piece of cake. Both were just the same (fine) once they’d settled down.

I hope you feel better soon.

Noodle78 · 28/02/2020 20:26

I’ve had 3! The first was before kids, pain was off the scale, I threw up and then had cramps and bleeding all day and evening. It then went missing inside me! Ultrasound showed it had floated off out of reach so was removed with a camera and air - also excruciating! They shoved a new one in at the time - that then got infected! I had 2 kids and went to gynaecologist for bad periods. Against my judgement he convinced me to try one more time. Fitted it while having a look inside with camera. I bled constantly, gained weight hand over fist and felt like a psycho. By the time I had it removed I’d mostly expelled the wretched thing. Never again.

MrsMigginsPie · 28/02/2020 20:28

Having my third fitted next week. Excruciating 1st and 2nd time. They said they will use numbing cream or injection this time. I’m not convinced but at least it’ll be the last one I’ll need. Not looking forward to it at all

meow1989 · 28/02/2020 20:30

Is it your first coil after a baby? I've had (copper) could since I was 16 but the one I had put in after ds was utter agony (and I had a section so unsure why!).

longtimelurkerhelen · 28/02/2020 20:35

@PanamaPattie

How about a coil says the GP when I asked about a vasectomy for DH

Which bodypart was the GP thinking of sticking the coil in on your DH? Grin

God forbid the man should have any discomfort. Angry

Ontheverge96 · 28/02/2020 20:36

I had mine fitted in November and I honestly didn’t even realise it had been put in until I felt the speculum coming out, literally felt nothing. I see a lot of people saying they found it painful so probably just one of them things that effect us differently. Sorry you had to go through that!
Also agree with @Intelinside57 that rude man would of been told to fuck off straight away, i too would be complaining about getting dumped in the waiting room. Doesn’t seem very professional.

Tellingitlikeitisnt · 28/02/2020 20:37

Sounds like you had some cervical spasm OP. That can cause a form of shock if the coil is still inserted and can be very painful. Sometimes the doctor can still manage the fitting esp if they use dilators but sometimes it can close up so tightly the cool can’t be out in at all.

Just unlucky but really horrible for you. She might have perhaps pushed on a bit too much maybe as she didn’t want abandon the procedure and leave you without it.

If you have another you can ask for an actual injection of anaesthetic to the cervix rather than just the numbing gel.

Hope you feel better soon

datasgingercatspot · 28/02/2020 20:38

Women are expected to put up with major GYN procedures without pain relief or adequate pain relief. I had a friend scheduled for a hysteroscopy with polyp removal and when she got there and found out it would done, in theatre, with NO pain relief at all she walked out. Utterly barbaric to not even offer pain relief for that or for coil fitting.

comfysocks8516 · 28/02/2020 20:41

Mine was agony. Dreading having it out - is it as bad does anyone know?!? I hope not!!

ClientQueen · 28/02/2020 20:41

@comfysocks8516 not for me, cough and it was out

Whatsmyname26 · 28/02/2020 20:48

Barely felt mine when it was inserted but I have bled non stop for over 4 months now. I have no real choice though as I’ve been diagnosed with complex hyperplasia and mirena is the most effective treatment for it.

PanamaPattie · 28/02/2020 20:56

@longtimelurkerhelen

Quite - 🙄 - it's all about DH not having an "irreversible" procedure.

When I said we didn't want anymore DC - we have 4 - the GP even said that DH might want more DC in the future!

Sexist drivel.

Triskaidekaphilia · 28/02/2020 22:43

Something went weird with mine. It was pre having children, age 19 and my body went into some kind of weird shock, like I was fainting lying down and my heart went funny, even though I didn't feel any pain. I felt like I was dying. They gave it a few mins to see if it went away then removed it. They said it was something to do with my cervix going into shock and that they'd only seen it once before but I'm still a bit confused about what happened.

CrazyMeep · 28/02/2020 23:35

I had one fitted today for the first time and it was quite uncomfortable. They said I did great as I still smiled and talked through it, but I was nearing the upper end of my pain threshold.
When I booked the appointment they did advise me to bring someone with me because feeling faint afterwards is quite common.

Topseyt · 29/02/2020 00:47

Bluetrews25 - I do get where you are coming from. I was told to expect bleeding during the first few months too.

I was extremely reluctant about the idea of having any form of coil inserted into me. I am dismayed at the effect that the hormones seem to be having on me - low mood and anxiety every day, which I didn't have before.

I agreed, against my better judgement, to give it a try because of heavy periods, but I now wish I hadn't and hope to get it removed.

Stopping hormonal contraception after DD3 was born 18 years ago was the right decision for me. I should have stuck with that really and I am annoyed with myself that I didn't.
