There is not one person I know in real life that is prepping for a coronavirus outbreak. In fact, no one I speak to even mentions the threat of the virus.

Of course we know of it as the hysteria surrounding it is all over the news / social media, but aibu to think preppers only exist on mumsnet?

Of course Grin

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 28/02/2020 15:27

It does make me smile (albeit ruefully) that a lot of the MN mentality seems to have shifted from "preppers are hysterical loons" to "well actually, I myself am a prepper I just don't call myself one. I've been doing it for years, me. I just like to say I have common sense" HmmGrin

Prepping means preparing, that's the definition. Anyone who thinks there is no need at all for a certain level of preparedness at the moment is either wilfully ignorant (not reading the news/making themselves aware) or very stupid or deluding themselves for whatever reason.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 28/02/2020 15:27

Is preparedness a proper word actually? Do I mean preparation?

okiedokieme · 28/02/2020 15:36

I always have a month or more of food bar fresh stuff (and always have canned and frozen) not because I prep for anything specific but it's just how I like to be - eg if the car breaks down and I have huge bills then (a) I don't need to drive to the shops and (b) I won't run short of food. Staples I have 2-3 months worth but it would get boring after 4-5 weeks when the chopped tomatoes etc run out. Never understand why (unless for financial reasons) people have bare cupboards, it's horrible having to go shopping in pouring rain/storm etc because there's simply no food

MelanieFrontage · 28/02/2020 15:51

I suppose I’m a prepper but I’ve always just seen it as having well stocked cupboards! Here are only 2 of us in our household but we’ve probably got enough food in the cupboards and freezer to last us a month, 6 weeks at a stretch. Plus I’ve got lots of baking ingredients in the baking cupboard (how MN does that sound 😂)
We’ve also got plenty of loo rolls but I’ll top up the medicines this weekend, oh and the wine 😀
Finally I’ve got enough seeds to keep me going in home grown salad and veg for about the next 5 years 😂

bellinisurge · 28/02/2020 15:53

What most people are talking about on here is the homesteading version of prepping. As we don't live in ranches in the middle of nowhere, the idea of a homesteading approach sounds a bit odd. But that's what it is.

userxx · 28/02/2020 15:59

oh and the wine 😀

My kind of prepper! Alcohol kills viruses, I read it somewhere once.

Notnownotneverever · 28/02/2020 16:00

Constantly talked about at my workplace. Constant. Makes my head hurt.

MelanieFrontage · 28/02/2020 16:02

Not only does wine kill viruses, if you drink enough of it you don’t care 😂
Gin is a perfectly suitable substitute (must stock up on tonic water 😆)

bellinisurge · 28/02/2020 16:09

Dh and I added to our wine stash with some enthusiasm today. I channeled my inner MN as I got a couple of bottles of Prosecco from Aldi today Grin

Dennisreynoldsduster · 28/02/2020 16:12

Ooh tonic water! Thanks @MelanieFrontage that was a near miss Grin

MelanieFrontage · 28/02/2020 16:15

A couple of bottles @bellinisurge and you call yourself a prepper?!?!

A couple of crates at least 😂

I’m going to offload my local Tesco of all their boxes of Zesty White tomorrow 😝

bellinisurge · 28/02/2020 16:17

You should see my stash @MelanieFrontage Grin
Buying wine is part of my "getting dh on board" strategy. That and Tunnocks Teacakes.

Welltroddenpath · 28/02/2020 16:25

My rural local health centre has closed today for a mysterious deep clean. I’m surprised that anyone can know nobody who’s not talking about it.

It’s not everyday lots of schools, gps and health centres get closed for deep cleans.

I’m with you OP, load of poppycock. China probably staged the whole thing to get people to stockpile their plastic shite. Plus it’s no worse than the Black Death. I heard it can be cured with sticky back plastic........ etc, etc

I’m off to stockpile wine too, why not? If I get shitfaced enough I won’t care what day it is, forget a looming pandemic

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 28/02/2020 16:36

This is the first time I've prepped and feel proud of myself!
Basically just stocked up the cupboards and freezer with stuff we normally use, but a bit more. Plus paracetamol, washing up liquid and loo roll. Just so if we are ill, or its local, we can hide.

VivaLeBeaver · 28/02/2020 16:38

My gp every now and then shuts for a deep clean, nothing to do with corona virus.

userxx · 28/02/2020 16:50

That's the spirit.

Madratlady · 28/02/2020 18:41

I have made sure I have extra frozen and tinned food in, as I use something I’ll top it back up. Then I’m sorted in case of quarantine (currently unlikely I think but you never know, my husband is thinking worst case scenario) or people panic buying. I could feed us for a few weeks from the cupboards and freezer if I needed to.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 28/02/2020 19:09

I don't understand why people are so dismissive of 'being prepared', I'm the least anxious person you could meet, very laid-back about life, but ever since I bought my first home in my mid-20's I've made sure I have a pantry full of food, fully stocked first-aid kit and medicines, plenty of candles, batteries etc. Useful things such as string, a sewing box, a tool kit for repairs, fuses, lightbulbs, anything that's needed for a smoothly running domestic life really. A PP called it 'homesteading', and I like that term.

I take great pleasure from domestic order, a finely stocked and ordered pantry, utility room, potting shed or cellar makes me feel that all is right with the world, or at least the one part of it I can control. I'm firmly of the belief that domestic order is one of the keys to a truly serene life.

SusanneLinder · 28/02/2020 19:15

Got an Asda delivery last night of extras and long life milk etc. And bread flour. Ran down my Brexit stock for Christmas so built up another one. Got Dettol etc. Mainly because DH has a very low autoimmune system.
Ordered extra dog food for the mutts ( mainly cos its cheaper). They have nearly two months supplies. Better fed than us the fuckers. Grin

LilyJade · 28/02/2020 19:18

I've got lots of pasta I bought in case of a no deal brexit... with bumbling Boris in charge I may still need it, despite the coronavirus!

But as a healthcare worker I doubt I'll be allowed to hole up for a couple of weeks if the virus really hits.

Alkaloise · 28/02/2020 19:18

My local Aldi had bare shelves in the tins, loo roll and medicine isles. I don't think I'm just surrounded by mumsnetters Grin

WalkingDeadTrainee · 28/02/2020 20:28

Rubbish, its just common sense. Everyone prepares for lots of things in life doesnt mean they are anxious.

I meant the use of the word. Not that prepping is an anxiety.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 28/02/2020 21:12

I know someone prepping. I think l might get a few extra bits in just in case. The government aren't issuing all this guidance for fun.

bellinisurge · 28/02/2020 21:31

"I know we are all too cool and rational about Coronavirus to start stockpiling provisions. But, let’s be honest, we all added some emergency loo roll to our last shop."
