We had a virus here a few weeks ago that had classic Covid symptoms: fever, dry cough, sore throat, no mucus, some minor breathlessness. Clearly not Covid because if it had been presumably it would have to have been rampant in the UK already, which it isn't.

Snowdropdelight · 26/02/2020 21:46

I'm confused I thought so re throat was very much a symptom?

Avacado, how many have already said they have had something similar and yet not sought classification...

SirVixofVixHall · 26/02/2020 21:47

DH is ill at the moment with the temperature/ sore throat / cough thing. He has also not traveled, although he was in London for a day a couple of weeks ago. He looks terrible, but he is eating and can get out of bed for essential things, so not flu.

LangClegsInSpace · 26/02/2020 21:50

We will get sudden huge clusters like Italy.

CV or garlic? Grin

I believe ginger is very easy to grow as well. You just bury some fresh young bits in a pot of damp soil, keep it watered and it will grow new lumps.

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 21:52

Fever, dry cough, tiredness were most common symptoms.

Then among less common diarrhea, sore throat, runny nose.

fannyanney · 26/02/2020 21:52

I've been poorly for 3 weeks now. A nasty cough, sore chest, trouble breathing, sore throat. I'm convinced it's spreading here, that the authorities know and that they're trying to keep figures down to avoid stricter containment measures. @Poppytime saying that her family weren't going to be swabbed has convinced me further.

.... or I could just be mega paranoid. I am pretty level headed normally, I promise!

KenDodd · 26/02/2020 21:53

I've been reading that it's generally nor coronavirus killing people, it's pneumonia getting in on the back of it. With this in mind, is it worth getting a pneumonia vaccine? I can't really find anything definitive online about it.

TreesSandSea · 26/02/2020 21:53

Where are you, Allex

That illness does sound sinister. And you too kettleon

I also have a sore throat/ cough/ starting to make me a bit breathless - it’s a bit harder to breathe if you know what I mean? I travel on the tube, been 10 day’s since I was there though.

Prob nothing, I wouldn’t get tested even if I asked for it. Which is one of the reasons I am sure it is more widespread all over the place than we think.

fannyanney · 26/02/2020 21:53

@KenDodd it's viral pneumonia, so the vaccine won't do anything. I believe It could help if bacterial pneumonia came as a secondary infection though.

Gammeldragz · 26/02/2020 21:55

@SirVixofVixHall Not everyone is bed bound with seasonal flu. I think that's just a popular myth that I believed myself until fairly recently. There are several strains circulating at any one time and some people will just get flu less severely than others, for various reasons I don't claim to understand. Same for this coronavirus, some people are having mild symptoms and others more severe and even fatal. Not all down to age or underlying conditions.
I think without actual testing it isn't possible to tell for sure if someone has a certain coronavirus, either flu or Covid19.
I will say that given how many tests the UK has done (assuming their accuracy), I don't think it can be running as rampantly as some seem to be suggesting as surely we'd have caught some by now?

Banana0pancakes · 26/02/2020 21:55

The vaccines we have are for bacterial pneumonia, which can be an occurrence after a viral infection so doubt it would do any harm being vaccinated, however the pneumonia that can develop with this coronavirus is viral so it wouldn't prevent it unfortunately.

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 21:55

SirVix despite the mantra of not being able to move if you have flu it does affect people I varying levels and some people have no symptoms at all, apparently!

smotheroffive · 26/02/2020 21:56

Mittens maybe ask for testing, and in fact you probably should, right?

Take good care of yourself, plenty of vitamins and nourishing food, plenty of drinks, support yourself as well as you possibly can.

I would be scared too, there is a lot of other stuff about too, so hopefully it's just that.

LarkDescending · 26/02/2020 21:56

The pneumonia vaccine won’t help because it covers bacterial (pneumococcal) pneumonia, not viral pneumonia which is relevant here.

Separately: interesting piece from the Guardian re the US response.

Twixes · 26/02/2020 21:56

@snowdropdelight that's it, just make sure the pointy but is pointing up and cover with soil. But as others have said you need frost to make the cloves split. Might be worth giving a go next October!

LangClegsInSpace · 26/02/2020 21:58

I don't think it's rampant in the UK yet or we'd be seeing lots of serious cases and some deaths.

KenDodd · 26/02/2020 22:04

Twixes
So you don't have to break the bulb apart and plant the individual cloves? That's just supermarket garlic, right? I might plant some in the garden tomorrow.

tryingtoprep · 26/02/2020 22:04

Just popping in here from the Preppers thread. I think the varied 111 responses people have reported might be down to local guidelines differing? 111 is run by different service providers across the UK. There really needs to be a much better UK-wide standard response. I agree with people who think it's already spreading here.

@KenDodd It's a viral pneumonia but it might be useful getting the jab to protect against any secondary bacteria infection.

AvocadoOwl · 26/02/2020 22:05

@Snowdropdelight if we had gone to the GP 3 weeks ago with fever/dry cough and no travel history or connection to anyone who had travelled to affected areas they would have told us we had regular seasonal flu or whatever and sent us on our way. Not a single chance anyone without travel history would have been tested for Covid weeks ago, even if they specifically requested it, unless they were severely ill in hospital with pneumonia perhaps.

It's flu season. It wouldn't have been practical to test everyone in the UK with flu symptoms weeks ago, nor economically justifiable.

IceWings · 26/02/2020 22:11

If you want to grow garlic I’d recommend buying proper seed garlic. Supermarket garlic is sometimes treated to prevent sprouting and it can be prone to viruses.

Snowdropdelight · 26/02/2020 22:12

Am I planting a whole garlic bulb, or a clove? How many frosts does it need?
We've had one.

Kenn I was considering the pneumonia vaccine too even though this covid one is viral..

Snowdropdelight · 26/02/2020 22:13

Ok Ice.

EnidBlyton · 26/02/2020 22:19

what about wild garlic?

Twixes · 26/02/2020 22:21

You break the bulb apart and plant only individual cloves, choose chunky cloves only. As Icy says seed is better but you can always give supermarket ones a go.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 26/02/2020 22:24

Laughing at the garlic.

Where I work we have had LOADS of people swabbed and not one confirmed case.
The sudden Corona pods popping up aren't filling me with much hope though.
