*If you want to grow garlic I’d recommend buying proper seed garlic. Supermarket garlic is sometimes treated to prevent sprouting and it can be prone to viruses.

Ironic.

nibdedibble · 26/02/2020 22:33

Article about planting garlic now

rosybell · 26/02/2020 22:41

virologydownunder.com/so-you-think-youve-about-to-be-in-a-pandemic/ just wanted to share as I found this article reassuring & informative .

I went to the dentist for a six monthly check up today. I have a great deal of respect for my dentist, he is an intelligent guy.

We spoke about Covid 19 & he told me that there was no decent information for dentists about prevention or measures to take to minimise risk of infection. Nothing from NHS or the BDA.

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 23:09

I have to go to the doctors tomorrow. Contemplating wearing a mask..

keepmoving · 26/02/2020 23:16

According to BBC news:

Public Health England said it was now working with some hospitals and GP surgeries to conduct tests on some patients with coughs, fevers or shortness of breath - regardless of whether they have travelled to a place where the virus is spreading.

brainfogg · 26/02/2020 23:18

About the two conversations happening at the same time - this sudden contrast made me smile Grin

Even more worrying @dylanatthemovies1
we are so conditioned that 2 per cent of us will start dying from a highly infectious disease any day and we don't keep our kids at home

Snowdropdelight · 26/02/2020 23:22

Keep surely that means they know its actually here. But undiagnosed.

Destinysdaughter · 26/02/2020 23:31

And of course Trump makes everything worse with his fake news anti science approach...

Here's the full piece doesn't indicate they think it's widespread here already though.

Going back to earlier pages - I think the reason they are pinpointing Myanmar, Cambodia etc is that they assume the virus is spreading there but they don’t have the resources to test, count infections or treat. All are popular places with Chinese tourists.

Secondly, I’m sure the govt is making a decision between three options: the “Chinese model” where they have to take steps to close schools, close businesses, lockdown whole areas, restrict travel etc. Very hard to do in the U.K. with a less compliant population.

Or two is to just let the virus run wild, tell people to stay home if they’re sick but basically do nothing apart from that - much like seasonal flu advice, only go to hospital if their symptoms get really bad.

And option 3 is a halfway house - encourage only essential travel, close large gatherings, stop sporting events etc but no hard lockdown.

Over here in Australia we had a terrible flu back in winter 2017 - huge numbers got it, it flew through schools, children and pregnant women died (not in huge numbers but still). Yet we had no restrictions, no school closures, nothing. My son got it mildly as he had been vaccinated and at our school we had classes with 50% of children off - at one point I think 40% of our whole junior school (of 350 children!) were away. So clearly it was serious and yet there was nothing like the response to this virus which seems much milder.

I too am loving the combination of garlic and serious illness

Catmaiden · 26/02/2020 23:47

Garlic needs a cold snap to trigger growth , so a sneaky fix is to put it in the fridge for a few days, then split the bulb into individual cloves and plant them

influenzaC · 26/02/2020 23:50

Is aussie flu not 1 in 25000 mortality

DressingGownofDoom · 27/02/2020 00:04

The wild garlic will be coming up soon, I wouldn't bother planting any!

LarkDescending · 27/02/2020 00:08

The Guardian’s live feed is covering the US press conference on Covid-19 - Trump et al.

LarkDescending · 27/02/2020 00:21

Literally while Trump is on screen claiming that US cases - currently 60 - will be “near zero” in a couple of days, the Washington Post tweets that the first US case of unknown origin (no travel, no contact with another case) has been diagnosed in Northern California - indicating a possible community outbreak.

LarkDescending · 27/02/2020 00:35

Trump is flipping deluded (we knew that).

Having just heard from Dr Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health that a fully-tested vaccine roll-out is up to 18 months away, he insists that this is just like flu, Americans should just wash their hands and “we’ll essentially have a flu shot for this in a very quick manner”.

influenzaC · 27/02/2020 00:39

What a dick. China at least had the decency to just pretend they didn't know

idontusuallypanic · 27/02/2020 01:26

Doesn't surprise me. We've been worried as we've had students just come back from Milan and the CDC have been very ALL IS FINE when we dare to question it.

The school was told to tell us there was no risk at all. Hmm

Unfortunately we have internet access and aren't stupid so this has made people angry and less trusting of healthcare professionals.

More on the US patient - intimated since Feb 19! That's a week ago. Shock

Lubarsky and Simmons said the patient was transferred to UC Davis from “another Northern California hospital” on Wednesday, Feb 19.
“When the patient arrived, the patient had already been intubated, was on a ventilator, and given droplet protection orders because of an undiagnosed and suspected viral condition,” the email said.
“Since the patient arrived with a suspected viral infection, our care teams have been taking the proper infection prevention precautions during the patient’s stay.

Cheery news time...

mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKCN20L0BI?__twitter_impression=true
Japanese woman confirmed as coronavirus case for second time, weeks after initial recovery

The woman, a resident of Osaka, in western Japan, tested positive on Wednesday after developing a sore throat and chest pains, the prefectural government said in a statement, describing her as being in her forties. She first tested positive in late January and was discharged from hospital after recovering on Feb. 1, according to the statement.

Health Minister Katsunobu Kato said in parliament the central government would need to review patient lists and keep tabs on the condition of those previously discharged, as health experts analyzed the implications of testing positive for the virus after an initial recovery.

"Once you have the infection, it could remain dormant and with minimal symptoms, and then you can get an exacerbation if it finds its way into the lungs," said Philip Tierno Jr., Professor of Microbiology and Pathology at NYU School of Medicine.

Tierno said much remains unknown about the virus. "I'm not certain that this is not bi-phasic, like anthrax," he said, meaning the disease appears to go away before recurring.

Jennifer Jacobs @jenniferjjacobs
Confirmed US case of coronavirus of UNKNOWN ORIGIN comes minutes after Trump press conference.

CDC “has confirmed an infection with the virus that causes COVID-19 in California in a person who reportedly did not have relevant travel history or exposure to another known patient.”

And there that case that's been expected for a while is...
