It’s so easy to grow your own garlic. It’s a winter plant perfect for the uk. Never seen it as from China in shops to be honest.

TheVanguardSix · 26/02/2020 20:40

In the States a lot of the garlic is from China (apparently). Not here though.

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 20:40

The fresh ginger does seem to come from China.

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 20:41

Garlic can fit in any little space in the garden. Very lovely when eaten fresh.

PicsInRed · 26/02/2020 20:45

One issue is that it's already hayfever season in the UK, so anyone with coronavirus and hayfever will potentailly have watery eyes and a runny nose. I wouldn't necessarily assume no coronavirus just due to no runny nose. I also wouldn't assume coronavirus full stop - but there is going to be some symptom cross over in Europe.

Snowdropdelight · 26/02/2020 20:48

I bloody love garlic is it really so easy to grow?

KettleOn919 · 26/02/2020 20:50

Allaxaonoma I am also wondering whether I've had it, but I haven't travelled so don't think doctors would even consider the possibility.

I'm two weeks into the weirdest virus ever. It started with a killer sore throat... not the tonsils, but further down. The pain was overwhelming, like I'd swallowed acid or something. Lost my voice for 5 days and the cough is showing no signs of going away, day and night; nearly two weeks in I'm creaking, wheezing and feel like I'm drowning in my own lung secretions.

This virus has left my nose and eyes completely unaffected; usually they are my weak area and viruses inevitably end in sinusitis. Not this time. Straight for the throat/lungs. My doctor said it's a winter virus; they all have different symptoms. But I can't help worrying. I'm due back at work on Monday, and a little concerned for my workmates.

It sounds so stupid, but I have been wondering whether it's been out there for some time already. I'm a daily tube traveller.

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 20:51

Garlic is really easy to grow. Literally stick it in and cover it up. It then grows. My bulbs this year were quite small unfortunately but the year before they were massive and my crop lasted us for most of the year.

Gemm83 · 26/02/2020 20:52

Has there been any further news as to whether an antibiotic/treatment has been found/created yet or is it something that has to be ridden out?

I remember when Swine Flu hit, Tamiflu was pretty much ready to go within a couple of weeks of the first cases 🤷‍♀️

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 20:53

Its bound to have been out there for a while. We don't have magic British immunity.

We have another month to go at least before hay fever season. There isn't a lot of tree pollen around just yet.

PotholeParadise · 26/02/2020 20:56

What worries me is the fact that it can survive on surfaces for nine days - danger lurks absolutely everywhere

Not all surfaces.

I linked to an analysis a few threads ago that broke down its probable lifespan according to surface.

CarrotVan · 26/02/2020 20:57

You need to plant garlic before the last frosts. It needs the cold shock to split

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 20:57

@KettleOn919 Sounds like the virus that has wiped my team out and some of my mates. Some of them went onto to develop secondary bacterial infections including pleurisy.
I am on week 2 - it started with burning in the chest, then killer sore throat, then complete voice loss for 3 days, on and off fevers, dry cough turned into coughing up stuff.
I got a secondary chest infection though relatively mild. I'm 10 days in and still not right.
God knows how the body will cope with CV after this beauty.

OneForMeToo · 26/02/2020 20:58

Just like onions are really easy to grow too from sets that is never had look with seeds. You can buy them from wilko and have your own onions for summer salads this year. I’ve grown garlic and onions in wall planters/small pots anything really.

PotholeParadise · 26/02/2020 20:59

I'm sneezing already. My bugbear is birch pollen which has a season of January to April, depending on weather.

AutumnCrow · 26/02/2020 21:01

@Ciwirocks, I was on the phone to the hospital today sorting out another appointment and discussing preparation and pre-existing conditions (I said I wasn't in good health, hence needing to have a carer with me), and afterwards it occurred to me that nothing was mentioned about Covid19 or hand washing before coming in.

I've just looked at the hospital's website and can't find a single mention of CV. It's a big hospital.

VivaLeBeaver · 26/02/2020 21:02

Daily mail reporting 4 pupils at Prince George’s school are placed in isolation.

KenDodd · 26/02/2020 21:02

Can I just get garlic from the supermarket then split and plant the cloves?

Mittens030869 · 26/02/2020 21:03

@Gemm83 It's a virus so antibiotics won't work, they only treat bacteria. That's the problem, I think, it's a virus and the medical profession have never got to grips with viruses.

I suppose where Swine Flu was concerned, it was a strain of flu, so they were better able to get to grips with it.

Coronavirus is completely new, but there will be a vaccine eventually. The question is, how much damage will have been done in the meantime?

Twixes · 26/02/2020 21:05

Re garlic from China: I'm in Ireland but I assumed it would be the same for UK. Apologies if you're less dependent on China for your garlic.

The reason I know ours comes from China is because we had an importer 'smuggling' garlic from China a few years ago. The garlic was falsely labelled as apples to avoid a higher import tax. For anyone who's interested, article here:

www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-17320460

I'd say there will be all sorts of products in limited availability if this continues.

meredithgrey1 · 26/02/2020 21:05

Just heard thar the Norwegian with confirmed CV is self isolating in their own home. Shouldn't they be in isolation in hospital or something?

Canada did this with some cases too. I guess if you're not that ill, staying home will mean hospital staff aren't unnecessarily exposed, which is obviously a key thing to avoid.

Frazzled2207 · 26/02/2020 21:05

There is no doubt at all in my mind that it must be in the UK. Tens of thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands, were in Italy last week. Possibly the infected are not yet showing symptoms though. Definitely read that it may spread before symptoms appear.

Scary stuff.

I'm not so worried about getting it as ti there being a general lockdown etc which would mean essentially that I can't work (self-employed)
