Stockpiling actually helps...

ACautionaryTale · 27/02/2020 10:11

Al this proves is that people do not have a real ability to assess risk

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 10:11

Oh do fuck off @Kat2345
Try spending the entire first year of your kids life in a specialist hospital where they end up 2 weeks from death before they finally have an organ transplant.
Try having a young child on immune suppressing drugs that mean he catches every little thing going.
Honestly, don't ever speak to me again

FourTeaFallOut · 27/02/2020 10:16

The WHO are saying 2%. People don't just get the coronavirus and then die the next day - so the mortality rate in various areas is going to depend on when the outbreak began, it's no use saying such and such place has this reduced rate when in the midst of an outbreak without the outcomes known.

fearnotsnot · 27/02/2020 10:16

@Kat2345 piss off from the thread with your ignorance. Sit in the same spot as the storm approaches, but leave us out of it.

chubley · 27/02/2020 10:17

I don't think it's been mentioned that Milan is popular with Chinese tourists, especially for shopping for luxury brands, so maybe the virus spread in early January, and local Italian people took it, unknowingly, back to the small towns, meaning not one super spreader but many normal-scale spreaders

fearnotsnot · 27/02/2020 10:17

Looks like the schools may not be closed even amidst a large outbreak. Wow.

IRAN—Head of the National security committe- Iranian parliament, Mojtaba Dhul Nur, has been infected with the #Coronavirus

LarkDescending · 27/02/2020 10:18

China has said 14% of patients recovered & discharged are subsequently testing positive again.

Snowdropdelight · 27/02/2020 10:19

Of Warren.

I went during peak norivus. People puking in park.

We didn't get it. Dc wore gloves, we wiped each ride handle with anti bac before laying hands on it, didn't stay on sites, off site, no buffets.

Lots of hand washing, gel and wipes.
We escaped it.

woodchuck99 · 27/02/2020 10:20

Al this proves is that people do not have a real ability to assess risk

All it proves is that you think you will be all right Jack if the infection sweeps the country.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 10:20

Emmanuel #Macron says the world is facing a crisis and an epidemic is coming. #coronavirus #france

MrsMeg1 · 27/02/2020 10:23

@ofwarren

I don’t blame you. I have come to the conclusion over the past couple of weeks that we have to be confident in making our own decisions here, and do what we feel is in the best interest of our families. The official advice is so conflicting and not up to speed.

I am even more concerned today after reading new reports from China & Japan of instances of the virus reoccurring quite severely after having it once and supposedly recovering. I think most of the general public are under the impression they’ll be fine, just a mild flu and recover but this knocks all that on the head. Obviously we’ll know more about this as time goes on but just feel like for the time being best to avoid any chance of infection and who knows how many are currently incubating it.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 10:23

50 people are currently quarantined in #Oslo, #Norway— for suspected cases of #coronavirus. They are currently awaiting test results.

bodgeitandscarper · 27/02/2020 10:23

Ofwarren I understand in part how you are feeling, my child was immunosupprresed with chemo for several years, and my mother currently is. You are doing the right thing for your family keeping your son home and safe, and thankyou for the updates. Flowers

HasaDigaEebowai · 27/02/2020 10:23

I can't remember whether its been discussed here yet but its worth having a chat with your DC about this. However much we try not to worry them they will all be discussing it at school. DS2 was really worried last night when I went in to him and he couldn't sleep. He is nearly 13 and not a baby but I had a chat with him about things, risk levels, impact on children, the fact that everything would be pretty much normal for us if we did have to stay home for a bit etc and then stayed cuddling him until he fell asleep. Lack of understanding means they do often carry the burdens of the world on their shoulders.

Obviously DS2 is thinking about this more than others might be due to the situation with his friend being isolation but I suspect others are also worried.

Snowdropdelight · 27/02/2020 10:23

Fear that's ridiculous. I can keep my dc at home not mixing with anyone.

Why can't optional isolation be allowed?

Those that can, can... Those that can't still reduced risks

MissPoldark · 27/02/2020 10:24

China has said 14% of patients recovered & discharged are subsequently testing positive again.

Where is this info from please?

Choux · 27/02/2020 10:24

@ofwarren havin read what you just posted about your family history, if I were you I would keep my son off school too. Wishing your family all the best.

vera99 · 27/02/2020 10:25

As a long time lurker here the level of panic and hysteria is chilling. Blow by blow updates as each twist and turn takes place are not helpful to anyone. I'm surprised MN doesn't mod this to death. Useful informative information yes lots of panic noise no.

RhodaCamel · 27/02/2020 10:25

Why are people so against prepping and stockpiling? Surely, it’s far more sensible to slowly gather bits over a few weeks than to suddenly panic buy and take everything off the shelves within a few hours. We have been aware that this virus was going to be problematic for the world for some weeks now. Yesterday I was watching a woman wipe out a whole shelf full off flavoured bottle water, no regard to the fact someone else may have wanted to purchase a bottle, no she swiped all 30 or so bottles. If this is how people act in a non panic situation can you imagine the scenario if we had to suddenly stay in and lock down. No, imo stockpiling is sensible and at the end of the day if (fingers crossed) it doesn’t get as bad as Italy then it’s all food we would consume anyhow.

WaterSheep · 27/02/2020 10:27

Blow by blow updates as each twist and turn takes place are not helpful to anyone.

I find the updates useful, especially considering they are often hours ahead of our mainstream media.

No one is forcing others to click on, or watch the thread.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 10:29

I think you will find Vera that most people want the updates. I have asked and only 2 or 3 people didn't.

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2020 10:29

Al this proves is that people do not have a real ability to assess risk

Define risk.

General population risk
Personal risk based on your age, health and environmental factors (eg what is your job)
Economic risk on a national level
Economic risk based on your personal circumstances (eg are you self employed, on zero hours contract, employed in an industry most at risk)
Supply chain shock risk - at international level (eg effect of China being shut down and affecting production of particular products such as pharmaceuticals or tech like iPhones)
Supply shock risk - at local level (eg panic buying and who this might affect most - for example old people unable to get to supermarkets at short notice, people struggling financially and unable to stockpile, effect on food banks)
Staffing risk - closure of schools putting extra pressure on health care providers and social care providers due to large numbers staying home to look after their children.

These are all risks which need to be thought of along side the risk from the actual disease.

woodchuck99 · 27/02/2020 10:29

Obviously there's no point in panicking because there's no point in panicking about anything but how do you know that people are panicking and hysterical by reading the posts on here? I am certainly concerned because if I do catch the chance of death will be quite high for me and quite irritated by idiots who presume they aren't at high risk even if they do catch it telling others how they should and shouldn't feel about it.
