#UK—A medical practice in #Derbyshire has told patients not to visit after confirming a case of #coronavirus. It is in #Buxton, where a primary school is also closed

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2020 10:32

Risk to your holiday bring cancelled
Risk to events you have purchased tickets for.
Risk to being caught abroad without foreign office support

Lots of risks...

vera99 · 27/02/2020 10:32

But panic helps nobody and incubating and amplifying it will start the stampede that leads to 'less-informed' or less able folk able to get what they need. Anyway, I'm not blaming any individual poster here our fears are totally understandable. My concern is more with MN allowing it to get almost out of hand and add to the already difficult 'climate of fear'.

FourTeaFallOut · 27/02/2020 10:33

Women stubbornly talking, sharing information and putting food aside - this is your definition of hysteria? Confused

LarkDescending · 27/02/2020 10:36

@MissPoldark

BBC news feed - see 10.15 for the Chinese 14% reinfection rate.

HasaDigaEebowai · 27/02/2020 10:37

This is not out of hand. What rubbish. Its a useful updating thread.

OffTheShelfElf · 27/02/2020 10:37

It doesn't feel hysterical. But it's useful to have this go-to place for all the latest info. (Thank you, @ofwarren.) Of course people will make their own decisions about managing risk - it's a tricky issue with no one clear 'right' solution. But surely there's nothing wrong with discussing it?

RocketFire · 27/02/2020 10:37

London Marathon in a few weeks.....was going to go along to support this year as i'm not running ,but that would be a lot of runners in from other countries....lots of sweat and close proximity!

surely they can't cancel ?

ACautionaryTale · 27/02/2020 10:38

I'm 99% certain I'm going to catch it. I had full blown swine flu when that was about. Ever since, if someone with a cold looks in my direction, I get it.

I'm 43 and otherwise healthy so I'm pretty confident I'll be ok long term.

My mother is 76 - healthy but older - is pragmatic and says at least it would be relatively quick. My FIL would likely be a gonna since he hs end stage COPD (but he's been at the "dieing" stage for 10 year to the bafflement of most doctors so he'd probably out live us all)

I guess I 'm just - we've all got to die at some point and if its your number that comes up, it was going to happe one way or another. Remember , everytime someone says "their life was saved" or its a life saving treatment, all it means it "death was delayed"

Life is a terminal disease.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 10:38

I must admit, I had a panic moment on those first UK cases but it was the shock, even though I knew it was coming.
Back to normal updates now

#IRAN'S TOTAL #CORONAVIRUS INFECTIONS REACH 245

Random18 · 27/02/2020 10:38

Sorry if already mentioned - new to thread.

But I see Japan is closing all schools until end of March.

That is scary. The thought fills me with dread if they do something similar here.

I love my little cherubs but I love it even more when they are at school.

Add to that the headache of work!!!

What will the parents do. Keep kids indoors for a month - not bloody likely.

I think we just need to accept to a certain extent it's going to spread.

I really hope they don't take the decision to close all schools here.

middleager · 27/02/2020 10:39

This is not out of hand. What rubbish. Its a useful updating thread.

Exactly. If somebody doesn't like a thread on MN then they can always hide it.

Not talking about this or censorimg news is more worrying, frankly.

FourTeaFallOut · 27/02/2020 10:40

Oh give over cautionary Hmm

vera99 · 27/02/2020 10:40

The sharing of useful accurate information that can help individuals - 1000% - the BREAKING stuff as each and every piece of news breaks only serves to make in me at least a sense of impending doom Anyway if that's what you want do to then I probably I should excuse myself.

fearnotsnot · 27/02/2020 10:40

@ACautionaryTale I would feel exactly the same as you if I didn't have three young children. If DH and I go, what will happen to them?

MrsStrangerThing · 27/02/2020 10:41

I enjoy the updates but then I work most days so just dip in and out, I find it an easy way to keep up with the stats without having to trawl through news sites. However I do think it is feeding a lot of posters anxiety, that is clear from the preppers thread were some posters have stated that they are deliberately switching off to take a break to help them relax/sleep etc. Some posters seem to be focusing on this all day everyday and that just isn't healthy. However ultimately, that is their decision and I am sure they will be consumed by it whether these threads exist or not.

TheVanguardSix · 27/02/2020 10:48

Cautionary Wow. You're driving the Bummer Bus.

SirVixofVixHall · 27/02/2020 10:48

I am particularly worried about the virus appearing to lie dormant and then re-emerging with heart problems. I have been trying to stay calm and accept that most people will catch this, but that it extremely worrying, as it suggests this may have a longer impact than first hoped.
I am in my fifties with auto-immune issues, so rather worried anyway (especially as an older mother, my children are young). I am very worried about all the normally fit and healthy people in our family and friendship groups who are over 80.
I wish this was the Summer and the dds would be out of school, and we could just sit tight for six weeks and wait for more information. My eldest has GCSEs soon, so that is a worry too, although I assume they will put something in place for GCSE students.

www.derbyshiretimes.co.uk/health/do-not-come-derbyshire-gp-practice-closed-after-confirmed-case-coronavirus-2000838

Possible third case. Two in Sheffield hospital

OffTheShelfElf · 27/02/2020 10:49

Vera, someone has already said that 'BREAKING' etc is on the original Twitter alerts, and it would be too fiddly to remove. Is it really such a problem? I get automatic SHOCK BREAKING NEWS alerts on my phone all the time, and it's usually about some celebrity breaking a nail or something.

MissPoldark · 27/02/2020 10:50

Ok thanks. Yes it says

“ Chinese health officials say that about 14% of patients in Guangdong province who had the coronavirus but recovered and were discharged from hospital have tested positive for the virus again.”

So it’s not really clear whether they are still recovered but still testing positive (as we know people have done), or whether they have become ill again.
Also unclear whether they are still carrying the virus from the original infection, or whether they have caught it again (seems unlikely).

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 10:51

I've started removing the breaking as it's at the start and not too fiddly. I haven't done it since yesterday morning.

Lycidas · 27/02/2020 10:51

I don't think this thread is hysterical at all. Go to reddit - r/china_flu if you want obsessive posting from across the globe (and tbh I don't blame them, if you're in the US and being told to fork out thousands for a coronavirus test).

There is too much pressure for economic life to continue as normal in the UK, so I can't see anything shutting down. And remember that Italy stopped all flights from China after its first two cases, and even that wasn't a guarantee of containment. How could it be, when asymptomatic people can pass it on? This is the real killer and makes all the current school advice pointless.

Imo the UK government has probably accepted that there's fuck all they can do other than start broadcasting advice on handwashing...

All the best to people who have pre-existent health conditions. My husband does and commutes to London daily :(
