@Delatron, not sure it's 'simple' to close schools for 2 weeks. Some of us have no childcare available. So what do I do? Miss work? But I'm an NHS clinician, so who will see my patients?

StuffedBird · 27/02/2020 09:53

I have underlying health problems and am older so excuse me while I panic!

JennyWreny · 27/02/2020 09:54

@WaterSheep I've had two emails from Girlguiding giving Guidance and updates on Coronavirus. One two weeks ago and an update one on Tues this week. Did you not get those?

MyFavouriteColourIsBlue · 27/02/2020 09:54

@Kat2345 where did you get the 0.7% outside Wuhan from? The current numbers coming from Italy have a much higher death rate than that.

ChesterBelloc · 27/02/2020 09:56

Friends of ours visited Northern Italy over half-term (NOT one of the 10 towns, I don't think), but two of their children have come home with coughs, they are now self-isolating. Today she is to take the children to be swabbed; the results will take approx a week to come back.

She is unclear whether the rest of the family also needs to self-isolate over this time period. Worryingly, she's spoken to 4 different health professionals via NHS111, and they've all given different advice.

WaterSheep · 27/02/2020 09:57

JennyWreny

Yes, but neither were about events such as Celebrate. They were about traveling to and from affected countries.

Kat2345 · 27/02/2020 09:58

Expert estimates, cited by the World Health Organization on Monday, indicate the death rate in Wuhan, the Chinese city at the centre of the outbreak, is between 2% and 4% – but more widely across China the figure is at 0.7%.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 09:59

Husband on his way now to get son (age 5) from school.
They were a bit surprised on the phone, saying there are no cases in his class blah blah blah
My issue is, how many people went to Tenerife over the holidays or had contact with people from Tenerife?
It took Italy literally 3 days to go from a handful of cases to 100s
I'm not willing to be a sitting duck.
My husband works from home so we can easily isolate.

Kat2345 · 27/02/2020 10:00

The panicking on here is incredible, people are even updating this thread when another case has been diagnosed. This sort of thing is not helping. People are even stock piling food!!!

Mittens030869 · 27/02/2020 10:01

Same here. I'm 50 so not old, but I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and I catch everything going. I also had pneumonia last year. Plus I'm an adoptive mum with 2 DDs of 10 and 7 with attachment issues.

I might have reacted dismissively when I was in my 20s and was healthy, though.

Kat2345 · 27/02/2020 10:02

@ofwarren I not surprised they were surprised they probably thought were completely over reacting

Delatron · 27/02/2020 10:02

@OffTheShelfElf Yes I do get that childcare would be tricky. I also think here we are going to prioritise the economy over health which is why the advice is conflicting.
Schools have been closed down in other countries and I guess parents have had to take holiday. Other countries seem to take it more seriously than ours but I do understand childcare/ job concerns. I’m self employed so I wouldn’t even get statutory pay. I’d still support the school if it closed due to health risk reasons though

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2020 10:02

More on 2 new Coronavirus cases in UK:
It’s understood the person who contracted the virus in Tenerife is from Derbyshire.
The other case involved a person who had been in Northern Italy but not yet clear where they are from in the U.K.

ofwarren absolutely the right decision IMO. He's five and in his situation you simply can't take the risk. He'll miss absolutely nothing that is going to impact on his education and it gives you the peace of mind you need.

Kat2345 · 27/02/2020 10:06

@HasaDigaEebowai yep

toysoldier · 27/02/2020 10:07

I'm a Head Teacher and have been given different advice depending on which call handler I have spoken to from the PHE about pupils coming back from North Italy. It's shocking, they need to get their stories straight!

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 10:07

1st case of #Coronavirus confirmed in #Poland. Woman came from Thailand

MyFavouriteColourIsBlue · 27/02/2020 10:08

@Kat2345 RTFT and allow people to deal with things in their own way. @ofwarren has a backstory that you may not know about. Please don’t judge other people doing what they feel is right for their family.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 10:08

MORE: New case in Valencia, Spain was confirmed in a soccer fan who traveled to Milan for a champions league game on February 19; about 2,500 fans from Valencia traveled to northern Italy that day - El Pais

MyFavouriteColourIsBlue · 27/02/2020 10:10

@ofwarren other people have been diagnosed and were linked to champions league matches weren’t they?

WaterSheep · 27/02/2020 10:10

A woman working as a tour bus guide in Japan has tested positive for coronavirus for a second time, in what authorities say is the first such case, Reuters reports.

The woman, in her 40s and a resident of Osaka in western Japan, tested positive on Wednesday after developing a sore throat and chest pains, the prefectural government said. She first tested positive on 29 January and was discharged from the hospital after recovering on 1 February, before testing negative on 6 February.

MyFavouriteColourIsBlue · 27/02/2020 10:10

Sorry appalling grammar!

Grinchlywords · 27/02/2020 10:11

.

Delatron · 27/02/2020 10:11

For those who think we are overreacting. What special powers do you think we have in the U.K. that mean an Italy situation couldn’t happen here? Within a day of the outbreak the shelves in the supermarket were empty.

I feel reassured that I’ve stocked up with food. Hopefully I won’t need to self isolate but there’s no harm in being prepared.
