Parents here are very upset about kids from Milan being at school today.

I agree that you won't see quarantine like Wuhan here. It will end up like it was for swine flu. School closures etc

YoursTunbridgeWells · 27/02/2020 08:30

@GorkyMcPorky I too think people should be prosecuted for not following the correct advice. Two examples - Italian child visited home in Northern Italy was sat about one meter away from child on Monday, coughing.
Plus two Italian children we know have vististed the lockdown area over half term due to parent telling everyone iteinery and then photos on social media. Apparently photos deleted on Tuesday and they told everyone they had been somewhere else instead.

In the latter case, if it can be proved they are lying; and their kids infect other kids, I'd like to see this family prosecuted. If say their kids infect another family and who loses a breadwinner as a result of the virus I would want financial recompense, however unrealistic that is. (In this case mum is SAHM so a judge could order her to work and give all her earnings to affected families.)

People's irresponsability will cost lives. I have no sympathy for those too stupid to comprehend the severity of this situation.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 08:31

NEW: Geneva, Switzerland confirms its first case; 2nd in the country t.co/eUoE2b20hL

WhoWants2Know · 27/02/2020 08:31

No, I can't see a proper quarantine or town isolation happening in the UK. It wouldn't gel with the "Keep Calm and Carry On" mentality, and we already know that the current government doesn't give two fucks for the most vulnerable people in the population.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 27/02/2020 08:33

@WaterSheep Case will likely be included in today's report after 2pm. I expect it was post the cut off for yesterday's report. Government probably buying some time. It suggests there may be a very big annoucement today.

Twixes · 27/02/2020 08:33

Anyone any more info on the Danish man with covid who was skiing? Is this the first person who was skiing who now has it? Any idea what resort?

It doesn't bode well for local schools who've just returned from the area.

Back to the garlic, that guardian article is really interesting. I love the idea of giant single cloves. Grin I'm going to give planting some a go, sure there's nothing to lose!

Frazzled2207 · 27/02/2020 08:33

Also think it's odd about the Buxton thing. I have read the article and it says it's a parent.
Theoretically that could mean the parent is in Italy/China though? So would not count as a UK case. Though they might have had contact with their child over half term.

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2020 08:34

The Buxton case is strange. There's no way the school would shut for a deep clean without a reason, but yet no Government confirmation of the case.

Very odd.

It's not 9am yet.

Person charged with making the announcement hasn't clicked in yet...

... I suspect we shall see much more of this British weakness yet.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 08:36

I'm just on the school run. I'll do more delving when I get back. If it's a parent then theoretically their child likely to have had extremely close contact.

WaterSheep · 27/02/2020 08:38

YoursTunbridgeWells

The cut of time makes sense, I wonder if the 2pm announcement will look very different today.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 27/02/2020 08:38

Sorry I can't link to it directly but there is a short video with Austalian BBC bloke on "Coronavirus: The ‘propaganda push’ in China
BBC"which I found linked on www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-51655133

The sheer number of medics they have, the hangers of beds etc - how on earth could the UK possibly hope to have that sort of reponse. We are roughly the size of Hubei and don't have the rest of Europe to ship in spare meds, doctors and other stuff.

middleager · 27/02/2020 08:40

Food poisoning waiting to happen.

Years ago my family got food poisoning, along with many others, at an AI in Greece. The flight home was awful.

I don't touch buffets either.

I mentioned upthread that my son (skiing in North Italy half term) stayed in a hotel where 40 kids had Noro and that the school went two days later after a deep clean only to find half my son's group of skiers got it.
I had pointed out to DH the food would be an issue, knowing how germs spread.

My son's school hasn't closed but I think it's been s little disingenuous telling parents that the resort in North Italy was not affected. The children flew from Verona and I can see from a tracking app that the coach went through Trentino where there is a case. Who knows if the coach refuelled there/stopped for snacks etc.

The school haven't communicated with the parents of the children who went, just to put our minds at rest

WaterSheep · 27/02/2020 08:41

A BBC journalist with a child at the school confirmed the alert was genuine.

Yet the BBC didn't break the news.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 08:41

I wonder if they have been told not to cause panic?

EducatingArti · 27/02/2020 08:42

I read the Buxton case as implying that the affected parent had been in the school ( eg for drop off or pick up of child etc) before symptoms/diagnosis. This would make sense of the closing for a deep clean too.

Diageo says virus outbreak could wipe out up to £325m sales

The spirits giant Diageo estimated that the fast-spreading COVID-19 disease could shave off up to £325 million of net sales for the group, as the virus outbreak forced many restaurants and bars to shut doors across Greater China region.

This is the latest estimate for a leading and international spirits giant to quantify the damages of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus that has now infected close to 79,000 and killed over 2700 in China.

middleager · 27/02/2020 08:42

ofwarren This line stood out too:
Derbyshire County Council and the Department for Health would not comment.

wheresmymojo · 27/02/2020 08:44

I don't know if this has already been posted as I'm about to catch up but there are rumours of a confirmed case in Buxton

lemonjumper · 27/02/2020 08:44

New cases are announced "as soon as possible" - the 2pm update is just a summary of the last 24 hours.

Thanks @ofwarren for the BBC link.

"A BBC journalist with a child at the school confirmed the alert was genuine.

Derbyshire County Council and the Department for Health would not comment."

^^ this is ridiculous. I guess they have been told not to say anything until it's announced officially, but it's madness in this day and age to try to keep anything quiet when social media allows news to travel so quickly.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 08:44

Possibly educating that would still mean that there is a known case in the UK though surely? School or not, we deserve to know I think

wheresmymojo · 27/02/2020 08:44

Sorry just seen everyone posting about it already Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/02/2020 08:45

I've had to visit my GP for a cough that won't go away (and I'm on immunosuppressants that mean coughs are taken seriously) I've got a mild chest infection.

I was really impressed as to how well they were coping. I felt so sorry for my lovely GP, because I know that soon they are going to be even more knackered and stressed.

We had a brief chat. There are loads of bugs at the moment. (As usual at this time of year). I was told to err on the side of caution with people who might be infectious. They wished me luck and I wished them luck. It felt a little like I was wishing someone luck who was about to go over the front.

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2020 08:46

I am confident that it's another diagnosed case. I do not think it counts as 'rumour' at this stage tbh.

It's satisfied my verification requirements.

NcFortuna · 27/02/2020 08:47

Yet the BBC didn't break the news

Since the election all their news has to go through Cummings first. Probably...
