At least Diamond Princess made people stay in their cabins....and even that didn't work. Queuing up together for a buffet seems bonkers.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 07:46

Panic buying didn't happen with our first few cases as they seemed like one off individuals. I think it will happen when we get a day with a few reports of cases in the wild.

NcFortuna · 27/02/2020 07:47

God I hope those Tenerife hotel people are not sharing a buffet! 🤮😷

Top Japanese government adviser says Diamond Princess quarantine was flawed

Dr. Norio Ohmagari is the director of the Disease Control and Prevention Center at the government-funded National Center for Global Health and Medicine and is a member of government panel of experts advising Tokyo on the novel coronavirus outbreak.

In an interview with CNN, Ohmagari said that the quarantine of the cruise ship "may not have been perfect."

He said a "tough decision" had been made by the Japanese government to allow the cruise workers to keep working aboard the vessel, despite the risk of infection, to ensure the smooth running of the cruise ship.

But by failing to isolate the crew of the Diamond Princess from the beginning of the quarantine, he said infected workers may have passed on "secondary or tertiary" infections to their fellow crew members and passengers, thereby exacerbating the deadly outbreak

"We suspected some of the cruise staff may have already been infected, but ... they had to operate the cruise ship itself, they had to see the passengers, they had to deliver the meals," Ohmagari said.

Sounds like they are. It's an all inclusive hotel isn't it? I've only been to one once, and never again. Food poisoning waiting to happen.

NcFortuna · 27/02/2020 07:52

@ofwarren that would be my worst nightmare too. I never touch buffets anywhere. But this!!!

RosieLancs · 27/02/2020 07:53

Staff from Winchester prison have been sent home with suspected Coronavirus and told to self isolate.
In reality they have the usual coughs and cold that are about this time of year but you can't take that chance in such an enclosed space.

AlexaShutUp · 27/02/2020 07:53

The lack of genuine quarantine arrangements in Tenerife is astonishing.

HRH2020 · 27/02/2020 07:53

My local gp surgery is closed today because of investigation into suspected case. They say they will be open tomorrow. Business as usual in London.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 07:55

I bet lots of people have permanent changes in behaviour once this virus has gone.
My son is immune suppressed and I was already quite tight on things but I'm really noticing things I would usually touch when out and about. The button to cross at the road crossing, the cash machine etc. I'm repulsed by them at the moment.

Snowdropdelight · 27/02/2020 07:56

Disney paris, the buffets at the hotels, norivus etc all rife. If someone with corona gets there, the whole place is doomed.

I remember from the Disney for brits Facebook page, when people said why don't ill people stay away, the argument was why? They've paid thousands for it waited ages......

TreesSandSea · 27/02/2020 07:57

Clearly the situation in that Tenerife hotel is bad. But what if you consider the possibility that basically what they have decided to do is just ‘keep then infection inside’. In terms of the amount of effort that would need to be made to do a proper quarantine, perhaps that’ will just decided to let the infection run its course in the hotel, as long as it doesn’t get out into the community.

So not so much quarantine as isolating a pocket of infection. Armed guards outside in masks but shared meals inside....

Awful for those in there and probably indefensible, but the news coming out of there does seem like that’s what the strategy is.

Frazzled2207 · 27/02/2020 07:57

@fibreoptic
You do realise that the lockdown areas of Italy are just 10 towns? Not any ski resorts.
Definitely not all of northern Italy.
Advice to self isolate is if you've been to the 10 towns OR elsewhere in Italy AND feel ill

TreesSandSea · 27/02/2020 07:58

Sorry for awful typos.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 07:58

That's it SnowDrop i absolutely love Disney but I don't think I could ever go again. You literally touch EVERYTHING there. All the ride handles etc. We went 2 years ago and didn't even take hand gel 😱

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 07:59

You are probably right trees. Better than it spreading round the island.

WaterSheep · 27/02/2020 08:00

Any idea about the hotel staff in Tenerife. Are they being made to stay at the hotel, or are they coming and going?

AlexaShutUp · 27/02/2020 08:01

Yes, that does appear to be the strategy. Too bad for anyone at that hotel who happens to be in a high risk group. I guess they can still self-isolate but the overall risk must be increased.

Mittens030869 · 27/02/2020 08:01

I'm still unwell with a temperature and cough, 7th day now. And my DH has reminded me that he went to a Chinese takeaway a couple of weeks before I developed these symptoms. Seems unlikely but it's an unnerving thought nevertheless . Especially as it never occurred to us and my DH has been travelling on public transport and I've allowed my DDs into the room.

Plus I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and I catch everything going.

AlexaShutUp · 27/02/2020 08:04

Any idea about the hotel staff in Tenerife. Are they being made to stay at the hotel, or are they coming and going?

I believe they're stuck in the hotel. They were talking to the husband of one of them last night and he said 40 something workers were trying to do the work that would usually be done by 100+ staff - presumably because those who were off duty when the hotel was shut down can't get back in to.work. Must be a nightmare for the ones who are there.

VivaLeBeaver · 27/02/2020 08:05

I believe the hotel staff are coming and going, allowed home etc.

Does the fact that 5 people travelling from Milan who now have now brought it back to other parts of the world with only 2 confirmed cases in Milan indicate that there is a bigger problem there than we are currently aware of? There is no way there are only 2 people with it in the whole of Milan when 5 people have found to have it since being there. That’s my point, not how many there are there now but the potential for this to be much worse. I don’t want to find out that in a weeks time we find it’s rife in Milan and the advice changes, meanwhile it’s too late because everyone returning from there has been carrying on as normal.
