Re. The Japanese case, that really could be negligence rather than a virus that can resurface. From what I read she tested positive late Jan, no symptoms then tested negative twice. I've read of some people having multiple neg tests despite being symptomatic so this isn't unusual. Shes then been discharged and self quarantined, then went on to develop symptoms.

I'd say this was a case with a long incubation period and our unreliable testing methods combined. The criteria for recovered patients in china is multiple neg tests and Ct scans showing lung recovery to make sure they're on the mend, whereas japans is much less thorough at this point; so even though this virus has me shit scared, I'm not concerned over that one case.

Fiberoptic · 27/02/2020 07:30

It’s going to spread. I know somebody that’s child has been to the affected area in Italy and hasn’t had them tested. Isn’t quarantining them and is actively meeting groups of people with out warning them about where their child has been. I was fuming yesterday. It’s not fair she has such disregard for other people’s health.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 07:31

I've got a feeling it's going to ramp up hugely today.
I'm reckon we will almost certainly have new cases here by the weekend.

Skyejuly · 27/02/2020 07:35

I also think we are on the tip of the iceburg

GorkyMcPorky · 27/02/2020 07:35

I really think that people behaving selfishly over this should be prosecuted. Including Zara Tindall who clearly doesn't give a shit about anyone based on her speeding record.

WaterSheep · 27/02/2020 07:35

I would say it's almost a certainty that in the next 2 weeks we'll see a large rise in cases.

The confusing information about when to self isolate, and what that means.

The hit and miss testing of people who call 111

The worry about not being paid if you have to isolate, means people will continue to go to work and send kids to school / childcare.

The constant, everything is alright, no need to worry line that people keep throwing out. It's reassuring, but also means people aren't taking it seriously.

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2020 07:37

Saudi Arabia has banned pilgrims.

Ciwirocks · 27/02/2020 07:38

I also have relatives who have returned from North Italy and are not self isolating because they don’t have symptoms. I too think it’s irresponsible but that’s PHE’s advice unless they have been to the locked down towns so what can you do. We are staying away though at least until we have a bit more information about the emerging situation in Italy. I still can’t see if there have been any cases in Milan yet, does anyone know? Either way a lot of people from the affected lockdown areas will have travelled through Milan so 🤷‍♀️

Skyejuly · 27/02/2020 07:38

Where is BoJo hiding. He needs to address it with clear guidence...

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 07:38

I'm supposed to be in college today but I just can't face it. I want to see what happens.
I'll be online with updates throughout the day instead.

Apricotfool · 27/02/2020 07:38

Thanks for this helpful thread and updates.
I’m due to go to Lisbon in 4 weeks. I haven’t yet bought travel insurance. If I buy now would a travel insurance policy cover for this?

Thanks

NcFortuna · 27/02/2020 07:39

@Fiberoptic like those people that walk out of public toilets without washing their hands. They don’t give a stuff about anyone but themselves. The virus will slowly increase to 100 known cases in the UK then spread rapidly like elsewhere. The selfishness of people will be our undoing.

Skyejuly · 27/02/2020 07:39

I have to go to work and the school my kids go to have not sent home if no symptoms. Absolutely ridiculous.

WaterSheep · 27/02/2020 07:40

Ciwirocks

Milan (population of about 1.5 million people) has 2 confirmed cases.

For comparison, among travelers returning from Milan, there are at least 5 confirmed cases: in Croatia, Germany, France, Spain, and Finland.

VivaLeBeaver · 27/02/2020 07:41

Just been to Morrisons and only 6 bottles of hand gel left.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/02/2020 07:41

I'm not surprised that Zara is not self isolating, she's following official advice and that's what I'd expect someone in her position to do.

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2020 07:42

A British guest at a hotel in Tenerife which has been placed in quarantine has told Newsnight that she was “horrified” by the conditions.

Selina Lund said hundreds of people were queuing together for food and fellow guests were not following hygiene rules to prevent the spread of the virus.

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 07:43

Apricot some policies do cover for pandemic or when travel advice changes. Get one asap and check the small print.

meredithgrey1 · 27/02/2020 07:43

Mike and Zara Tindall have just returned from holidaying in the area of Italy that is infected. They have decided not to self-isolate as they don't have any symptoms. I can't believe how stupidly they are behaving.

Is that not the official advice? Or do you mean they have come back from one of the quarantined towns?

VivaLeBeaver · 27/02/2020 07:44

I'm not surprised that Zara is not self isolating, she's following official advice and that's what I'd expect someone in her position to do

OK, that's fair enough then. I thought she'd been to an area where the official advice was to self isolate even if no symptoms. But if she hasn't been to that area then I guess that's OK.

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2020 07:44

Just been to Morrisons and only 6 bottles of hand gel left.

How long do you think we have left before panic buying hits the UK?

ofwarren · 27/02/2020 07:44

Omg RedToothBrush like we have both said before, it's Diamond Princess 2! What a disaster!

WaterSheep · 27/02/2020 07:44

The quarantine of those in the Tenerife hotel is a joke. It's more like an all inclusive resort than a quarantine area.

WaterSheep · 27/02/2020 07:45

Update Kuwait

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Kuwait now has leapt from 26 to 43, according to a health ministry official.

The official said that all the cases involved people who had been to Iran, Reuters reports.
