"Since the patient did not meet the existing CDC criteria for COVID-19 a test was not administered immediately."

Wednesday: Hey guys we've got a person with an unknown virus here. They are pretty serious and we've put infection control on but we have a policy to follow here. Plus Donnie says we are all prepared and there's no coronavirus here cos of the wall bigly.

Sunday: You don't think we should, y'know maybe pull our fingers out of asses and pay attention to what's happening elsewhere in the world and maybe get this person with the mysterious viral infection tested?

Slow hand clap for the US.

@KettleOn919 @YoursTunbridgeWells @LarkDescending @poshme @IceWings & other pps with the sorest throat virus EVER...

We had this virus Christmas 2018 along with neighbours, & there was a MN thread at the time. The worst sore throat I have ever had & a hacking wet cough so deep that I felt like I could drown. The festive season just collapsed as we lay prostrate in bed barely able to eat & drink. The first fortnight was dire - just so very very ill - it took about 6-7 weeks for the post-viral exhaustion to pass. A 200 yard shuffle to the local shops for essentials meant the rest of the day in bed. By Easter, normal service was resumed.

Paracetamol just did not touch the sides of the sore throat, Co-Codamol became my drug of choice. Difflam throat spray &/or gargle (recommended by MNetters) numbed the throat spray for a while.

I hope you all soon feel better.

We've just not found our patient X yet.

They exist...

I’ve been following this thread with interest. I’m currently pregnant. I previously had pneumonia (hospital acquired) would this likely make me more prone to getting pneumonia again? I’ve never been able to get a definitive answer from a doctor on this.

I’ve got a bit of wheeziness in my chest at the moment. I don’t for a second think it’s CV but it has got me thinking.

Newjez · 27/02/2020 05:34

That is pretty much how Italy took off. One patient who forgot they met up with a friend from china. They attended their GP, then had three hospital visits. Spread it everywhere.

I'm guessing the USA will be in serious meltdown in two weeks time. All because trump was worried about the markets and downplayed it.

Well, sadly this will crash the markets. This could be GFC 2 on top of the pandemic.

Newjez · 27/02/2020 05:36

You could be in the vulnerable group so take precautions. I have lymphoma and have had chest problems. Fortunately I'm not working ATM so I'm keeping my head down.

Loving the garlic chat amongst everything!

I had a weird viral cough thing in October. Came on really quickly as a dry cough. No sore throat though. I was exhausted. Was so fed up coughing. Ended up with Ventolin having not needed it for ten years. The cough lasted four weeks or so. I’m in uk. A friend in New Zealand had had the same thing. In this age of so many people travelling it’s mind boggling really when you think about how many different cold/flu type viral illnesses are around at any one time.

I’m watching the US with interest as supposed to be going to Chicago in four weeks.

I’m lucky that here in the UK we can stay home at the moment so actively choosing to perhaps put ourselves at risk by travelling seems unwise. I’m not necessarily worried that we would get seriously ill but it’s more who we would infect etc.

Newjez · 27/02/2020 05:45

Has anyone found out how quickly this thing mutates? I've heard nothing on the mutation rate.

This is starting to sound like Steven kings the stand, with a genetically engineered rapidly mutating virus.

Hope these cases are anomalies.

Re Japanese woman tested positive again after initial recovery, now heart issues.

"Once you have the infection, it could remain dormant and with minimal symptoms, and then you can get an exacerbation if it finds its way into the lungs," said Philip Tierno Jr., Professor of Microbiology and Pathology at NYU School of Medicine.

Tierno said much remains unknown about the virus. "I'm not certain that this is not bi-phasic, like anthrax," he said, meaning the disease appears to go away before recurring.

@RedToothBrush This is terrifying.
So rather than presuming for most healthy people they’ll get a mild form and recover, they could just be a ticking time bomb.
Really worried about my dc been exposed to it in school now until we learn more about this aspect of it.

WaterSheep · 27/02/2020 06:36

North Korea, which has reported no cases of Covid-19, has postponed the start of the new school term.

Tells us what we already knew. They have cases.

WaterSheep · 27/02/2020 06:55

The guy on the BBC said "It's never been safer for Brits to travel abroad."
As well as wittering on about how cheap flights are, and how many good deals are out there right now.

Absolutely mind-blowingly irresponsible.

The States have a problem with one of their reagents so they have very limited testing capacity at the moment. This article says only 350-500 tests can be confirmed a day and many States aren't testing.

Not true.

The person they thought brought it was tested for antibodies and didn't have any. So they don't know where it originated and are still trying to work that out.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 27/02/2020 07:20

Mike and Zara Tindall have just returned from holidaying in the area of Italy that is infected. They have decided not to self-isolate as they don't have any symptoms. I can't believe how stupidly they are behaving.

I hope the Royal family keep away from them.

Adesignforstrife · 27/02/2020 07:22

Ok I have a question. Why are China so determined/sure that their outbreak is under control and will be over by April? Hubei is big, but it's just like one European country. Why isn't there an expectation that it will hit other provinces in a big way, particularly as restrictions start to lift???

IgnoranceIsStrength · 27/02/2020 07:26

Student where I work returned from her hols in Northern Italy today. No symptoms but had visited some of the affected towns. She did not think to self isolate and it was only because a lecturer intervened that PHE were called and they said she needed to self isolate. The building she had been in will.now be deep cleaned but we remain open as she is not showing symptoms. It shows that people are not taking advice on board. And this is why I think it has the potential to continue a rapid spread.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/02/2020 07:27

I'll repost the link later, but the UK weekly flu reports aren't showing any uptick in ILI yet.

Unfortunately the Tindalls are demonstrating what the majority of people will do. Which is why I fear we're stuffed.
