Brexit will have soon cost the UK more than all its payments to the EU over the past 47 years put together

I know, how dare an independent UK be successful. It is disgraceful and might put ideas into other EU dependencies. Must be stopped at all costs.

Alsohuman · 01/03/2020 19:40

Ffs, it’s been 30 days since we “left”. It’s a bit soon to start congratulating ourselves on what a success it is.

HenHarrier · 01/03/2020 19:49

Zombie

45% of UK exports go to the EU. Either 8% or 18% (depending how you measure it) of EU exports go to the UK.

You do the math.

ZombieFan · 01/03/2020 19:51

Given it was touch & go for 3 years whether or not we would ever be allowed to leave, I think a certain amount of celebration that we have finally done it is permitted.

Admittedly there is always the kids in the back shouting "are we there yet", but the adults in the front are very excited for the new future we are heading towards.

HenHarrier · 01/03/2020 19:55

Well we aren’t there yet. Nothing actually changes until 1st Jan 2021.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 01/03/2020 20:54

the adults in the front are very excited for the qnew future we are heading towards.

I love this metaphor Grin

The "adults" in the front set out with no road map, ignored all the advice from the satnav and the traffic reports and have just veered off road into heavy fog, quite near a cliff edge. Oh, and the driver has a provisional licence, and three convictions for dangerous driving.

yellowhammers · 01/03/2020 21:20

The OP asked if we were still pro Brexit.
I am and I don't need or want a pile of ex remainers shouting at me because of where I put my cross on the ballot paper.

FFS it's happening. Stop shouting.

If you don't like the answer, don't ask the question.

We're you really expecting posters to come on here saying "oh dear, I didn't know what I was voting for, sorry ". Well, it won't happen.
For the record I am relatively young, very well educated and delighted we have legally left the EU.

jasjas1973 · 01/03/2020 21:41

I think regardless of your views on Brexit/EU, the UK couldn't have picked a worse time to leave.
Even my Brexit party supporting work colleague thinks Coronavirus will cause a world recession/depression and that will screw the UK, as countries become more protectionist, trading blocs become more important (and we ain't in them) and we lose the frictionless trade with the EU.

Alsohuman · 01/03/2020 22:01

Who’s shouting?

ZombieFan · 01/03/2020 22:09

This has been the perfect time to leave the EU, the Covid-19 virus shows how important it is for us to be more self sufficient and independent. Our Brexit stockpiles means we wont run out of essential medicines.

Also with Turkey opening their border and letting large numbers of illegal immigrants have access to the EU. We need to be strengthening our borders with Europe not dropping them.

Pro EU voters would never agree its a good time to leave. The best time is now!

jasjas1973 · 01/03/2020 22:21

Zombiefan We can't trade with ourselves!

The stockpiles are long gone, no deal preps were wound down before xmas.

Do you think france will stop these migrants trying to cross the channel? or agree to take them back?

MirandaGoshawk · 01/03/2020 22:35

Nope. Whichever way you turn, from jobs, investment, trade, fishing rights, environmental standards, ease of passing through airports, etc etc etc, its a disaster.

HenHarrier · 01/03/2020 23:03

Bollocks.

www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/03/01/downing-street-department-health-locked-row-access-eu-pandemic/

Leaving joint warning and management schemes is stupid to the extreme.

Unless you think sovereignty includes includes owning your own pandemics?

ZombieFan · 01/03/2020 23:10

I agree its awful that their is no one else to trade with. If only their was an entire world outside the EU that would love to trade with us. Sadly their isn't Confused so I accept we are in big trouble. We will have to go back to being self sufficient and cancel the rest of the planet.

yellowhammers · 01/03/2020 23:11

Apart from anything else it is not a good time to be part of the EU.
Look at what's happening in France.
EE countries are putting razor wire along their borders.
Merkle is on her way out.

Boris has the strongest majority in Europe.

Can't see how we have messed up fishing....well we might have done for the French 😉

HenHarrier · 01/03/2020 23:18

How self sufficient is the UK when it comes to food?

PointlessAddict · 01/03/2020 23:29

How self sufficient is the UK when it comes to food?

This. I was watching that Back in time for the corner shop programme last week, set In Victorian times and were importing food then! People who think we can be self sufficient are deluded

Cabaceo · 01/03/2020 23:38

Given the rise of the FAR RIGHT in the EU.....more than 20% of the recent vote in Hungary, Austria, Denmark and Belgium. More than 15% in Spain, Switzerland, Finland, and Estonia. YES !

Parker231 · 01/03/2020 23:39

I’m dreading seeing the impact onto the supply chain and the affects to manufacturing and food deliveries. The UK car industry is really going to struggle to survive.

ZombieFan · 02/03/2020 00:16

How self sufficient is the UK when it comes to food?

Why do you think we need to be or if required, cant be.

Parker231 · 02/03/2020 07:29

The UK imports 48% of its food and the amount is increasing each year.

jasjas1973 · 02/03/2020 07:45

In the UK its around 43%

Let me just list some of the pro Brexit groups in England for you.
EDL
BNP
NF (yes, they are still around)
Britain First (two million followers on FB before being banned)

ALL the far right neo nazi groups in the UK are pro Brexit, every single one of them.

This is your side.

KenDodd · 02/03/2020 08:44

That was at @Cabaceo

Theworldisfullofgs · 02/03/2020 08:53

The far right facilitated the pro brexit vote. Look on Facebook, for example, look at Farage.
