Netflix: The Stranger. Utter crap!

I know there are other threads on MN about this programme, but everyone on there seem to love it, whereas I am cross with myself for watching it! My only excuse is that I am up at night on nursing duties for an elderly dog in his final days and needed something to help keep me awake.

Ridiculous, utter non-credible, flawed plot
Terrible, stilted script
Awful acting from some actors
Cliche-ridden characters
Big name actors just looked embarrassed and uncommitted

God it was awful.

Is there anyone else out there who feels the same or am I alone?

OP posts:
Letsallscreamatthesistene · 25/02/2020 13:16

It was pretty bad. Didnt deserve the hype it got I thought, much like Stranger Things

CommunistLegoBloc · 25/02/2020 13:17

I thought it was shit too. I didn't like Safe either but everyone was raving about this so I gave it a go. Stupid plot, bad acting, rubbish writing and poor direction. I honestly don't understand what people see in it.

Nowayorhighway · 25/02/2020 13:17

Personally enjoyed it but did find a fair few flaws in the plot. I don’t think the actors looked embarrassed at all.

PinkiOcelot · 25/02/2020 13:18

I did enjoy it but did have a few questions in mind when it was finished.

TanteRose · 25/02/2020 13:21

Omg DH and I are having to force ourselves to get through this load of bollocks!!
It's cringeworthy but we really want to know if they resolve ANY of it ConfusedGrin

Two more episodes to go...we have to psyche ourselves up, seriously haha

ParadiseLaundry · 25/02/2020 13:31

YANBU. It I say that as someone who only watched about 10 minutes. British tv dramas are always crap imo.

Twitney · 25/02/2020 13:32

I’m with you OP. I couldn’t understand what everyone enjoyed so much. It was so melodramatic from the very start that it had nowhere to go in terms of tension etc. Some of the acting was atrocious, not helped by the characterisation and writing. And then at the very end I just found it suddenly grim and depressing and just massively wished I’d never watched it!!

Meruem · 25/02/2020 13:37

I admit I did watch it but wasn't really impressed. It was just ok. I don't get a lot of hyped up shows. Tried the Crown and Messiah and both seem to involve so much standing around from characters, with thoughtful looks on their faces! So little happens on a per episode basis that I just get bored. They're still sitting there in "my list" and can't bring myself to finish them. Along with "You" which is also supposed to be great but also feels slow so far. I think my attention span is very short these days!

SomethingBlue22 · 25/02/2020 13:43

The last episode was a huge anti climax

Blueuggboots · 25/02/2020 13:45

I started watching it but I detest Richard Armitage. He's so disingenuous - he seems to "smoulder" in anything I've seen him in. That's all he can do?!

Justyouandme33 · 25/02/2020 13:50

I agree with you OP, I was invested in the first few episodes, there seemed to be so many story lines which I thought would all be brilliantly connected in the end.

The ending however was hugely disappointing, it was such a boring explanation with the stolen football club money. I didn’t really understand some of the characters motives either.
For example Katz murdering Heidi because he wanted a description of the two women she saw as they were blackmailing his friend?

Delbelleber · 25/02/2020 13:52

Considering the choice on Netflix is pretty dire I found the stranger really good and entertaining

JudyCoolibar · 25/02/2020 13:53

I watched the first episode but simply didn't find it engaging enough to bother with any more.

AntennaReborn · 25/02/2020 13:55

How very dare you OP 😂

I enjoyed it, which surprised me because I don't normally like series with a lot of hype around them

@Justyouandme33 Katz didn't mean to kill her, he lost control of the situation (which is hardly surprising given how much of a fruitloop this character is)

nibdedibble · 25/02/2020 13:57

It was trashy which is frankly an escape from reality (thank fuck!) so I didn't mind. I was not expecting quality.

AryaStarkWolf · 25/02/2020 13:59

YABU it was fun, don't think about the plot holes too much Grin

anon2020202020 · 25/02/2020 14:00

I loved it. So many unanswered questions though.

thecatneuterer · 25/02/2020 14:01

It was shit. Yet somehow I watched it all the way to the end.

LuckyBitches · 25/02/2020 14:01

I had to think about this, on balance I've given you a YABU because whilst it is utter crap I was somehow hooked.

The 'stranger's hat really annoyed me.

DataColour · 25/02/2020 14:03

Watched the first episode last night. Didn't find it very engaging and I normally love this genre. Not sure whether or not to continue tbh.

boiseidaho · 25/02/2020 14:03

Ridiculous overacting, stupid characters and an unsatisfying plot, but quite watchable. Watchable drivel.

knightlight · 25/02/2020 14:04

Totally agree, load of rubbish. I dream of a crime drama where the plot doesn't lead directly and personally back to the detective on the case.

messolini9 · 25/02/2020 14:04

For example Katz murdering Heidi because he wanted a description of the two women she saw as they were blackmailing his friend?

Surely Katz murdered Heidi only after he realised that she was the copper's best mate, so he was bound to be identified?

ActualHornist · 25/02/2020 14:05

It was ok.

I dislike Harlan Coben’s books and this one and Safe only solidified that. Barely tenuous plots and really anti-climactic and half-arsed wrap up.

7 Seconds and Unforgotten on Netflix are both good.

DataColour · 25/02/2020 14:07

Yes Unforgotten is very good.
