To be worried about coronavirus part 4

999 replies

idontusuallypanic · 24/02/2020 12:40

I looked and couldn't see another 4th thread.

I'm personally worried this morning as I've heard that two students ds goes to school with have just returned from Milan where cases have just rocketed.

OP posts:

I see Italy has postponed Salone de Mobile, a big design exhibition due to be held in Milan in April. It’s been moved to June so presumably they expect the situation to have improved by then.

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 12:03

@Poppytime

I don't know if Veneto mentioned it on this thread but she said her DS was taken aback by the fact that the swab goes right up your nose (further than they expected) so just giving you a heads up and continuing to worry about Veneto and family

Company in Canary Wharf now closing their offices and asking people to work from home...

Miralice · 26/02/2020 12:05

It is quite concerning to think that the UK might take the no quarantine approach. If the WHO is correct in their current assessment that there is no huge "iceberg" of undetected cases in China and hence the extreme quarantine in China was what worked well, to me that indicates two things:

  • the severity of the disease is indeed relatively "bad", as in about 20% severe cases and 1-2% mortality
  • any country that doesn't implement such extreme measures is likely to get it much worse.

Happy for anyone to find flaws in my argument!

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 12:06

Worse than that. It indicates 20% sever/critical cases and circa 8-10% death rate

LarkDescending · 26/02/2020 12:09

Boris has turned up to PMQs, looking like his usual self (so far as I can tell).

Poppytime · 26/02/2020 12:10

Thanks mojo - that sort of thing usually makes me gag, lovely! But better to be safe than sorry

TheVanguardSix · 26/02/2020 12:11

Is it true no children have caught it and does that include teenagers?

4 children in Italy have been infected, the youngest is 4.

LarkDescending · 26/02/2020 12:13

WHO: declaring a pandemic carelessly would bring no material benefit but would bring unnecessary fear and stigma, and risk paralysing systems.

FingonTheValiant · 26/02/2020 12:16

Currently in the French Alps, though we live on the north of France, no one seems at all bothered. Juventus are playing Lyon in France and 3000 Italian fans have been allowed in, mainly from Turin. I've just listened to them being interviewed on the radio (the italians) they've been issued with face masks and one fan said "I'm not going to wear mine as I'm going to be sitting next to the Lyon supporters and the French don't have a CV problem". 🤦‍♀️ Another couple were asked if they were worried about CV and said "No, it's much worse in Italy than here so we're not worried at all". Talk about missing the point... The French don't seem to be taking it seriously as all. The radio also mentioned a group of 6th formers just back from Lombardy, symptomatic, but they tested negative, so all good.

Misandei · 26/02/2020 12:16

And how could anyone possibly know about "life long illness afterwards "? Where are you getting your data from?

@Porcupineinwaiting I didn't ask that.

Misandei · 26/02/2020 12:20

@SirVixofVixHall That is reassuring Smile.

douthinkitspossible · 26/02/2020 12:21

Do any cynics here think the any members of the goverment have looked at the people most likely to die and considered the affect on the benefit bill.
Wouldn't put it past some of them

brainfogg · 26/02/2020 12:30

@douthinkitspossible - yes, I do. And I’m not a conspiracy theorist at all. But in this case it seems as though they’ve practically encouraged the virus to set up camp here.

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 12:30

Yes. Also not a conspiracy theorist but have said this on the Preppers thread.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/02/2020 12:33

Bloody good point.

Lweji · 26/02/2020 12:35

They'd also have to consider the hospital bills for those that would take their sweet time to die and those who "only" get pneumonia.

As far as killing the vulnerable and the eldest, it wouldn't be the easiest and cheapest plan.

Hmm
Poppytime · 26/02/2020 12:36

We were called back by an 'infectious disease doctor' who said they needed to be pragmatic and have decided not to swab us and we probably just have a normal bug Confused so that's that!!

douthinkitspossible · 26/02/2020 12:36

I'm not a conspiracy theorist and I don't like to think the worst of people but I do not trust this government

NathanNathan · 26/02/2020 12:37

This WHO thing about not thinking there is an "iceberg" and the resulting higher death / critical rate, can someone link to a source?

This seems very worrying. Sad

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 12:38

@douthinkitspossible God that's horrid. But we know there are some eugenics fans in power. People with illness cost the country a fortune in care, likewise the elderly etc.
The aspect of this that is worrying is what if we get to a situation where there is little access to food, partly due to panic buying. The knock on economics causes prices to rise. Those who are better off can not only afford the higher prices but are more likely to have stocked up. Those on low incomes - could they face starvation? I'd like to think that is a massive over exaggeration but ?
How do you deal with fair food distrbution with panic buyers? Rationing would be costly and could take a long time to implement.
Would people carrying on giving to food banks?

YoursTunbridgeWells · 26/02/2020 12:41

@NathanNathan It was on the talk give yesterday

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 12:41

@NathanNathan

It is a two hour conference from yesterday - first hour is really worth watching.

I had to have a big glass of alcohol afterwards though because it was so very clear that

A. We can't and won't do as good a job as China have so it will spread more here

B. There is no iceberg and no reason to think mortality rates will be better - in fact China has much better facilities for severe patients than we do in the EU

Let me dig out the link

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 12:42

Just seen already posted!

They were late so starts at 10 mins in...
