There is a good Twitter thread here giving a summary of the WHO press briefing yesterday:
mobile.twitter.com/juliaoftoronto/status/1232323122654826497

Includes this: "Important finding: not huge transmission beyond what you can see clinically, Aylward says. I think that means subclinical/asymp transmission is not that significant.

Also: "Main driver is not widespread community transmission;" it's transmission in households.

Also said that healthcare workers were mainly infected within households, not in hospitals.

Worth reading the whole thread though.

I'm so pissed off with China and their medieval food hygiene practices. I hope the get their bloody house in order!

Misandei · 26/02/2020 11:27

@Hasa @Ofwarren Thanks for clearing that up.

DressingGownofDoom · 26/02/2020 11:32

Thank you @HasaDigaEebowai

We've just had our first email at work telling us to avoid going to conferences unless absolutely essential and visitors to our building will be asked if they've travelled to any of the various locations in lockdown.

It is really a repeat of what the foreign office have said but it is interesting that we are being emailed about it now.

HIVpos · 26/02/2020 11:38

@ofwarren I too appreciate your updates, (as I do posts of others like @RedToothBrush). However takung into account those who might be more anxious it would be great if you could try to remove words like URGENT when you C&P as they can read more scary then they are.

@DressingGownofDoom regarding masks, you might find this useful if you haven’t seen it, especially the video www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public/when-and-how-to-use-masks

Coronavirus cases rise in Italy, with children among new cases t.co/oQQ588eHPu t.co/ihXdgBToud
Reuters confirming my earlier post about kids

SirVixofVixHall · 26/02/2020 11:41

Misandei Asthma doesn’t seem to be too much of a worry, according to Dr John Campbell’s webchat on Saturday ( on youtube). So I hope that is a little bit reassuring.

Porcupineinwaiting · 26/02/2020 11:42

Does catching COVID then provide immunity from it

In the vast majority of cases, yes.

And how could anyone possibly know about "life long illness afterwards "? Where are you getting your data from?

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 11:45

Because it can cause permanent lung damage. This is well known

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 11:45

#ITALY— 4 new cases in Emilia Romagna, All stem from #Lombardy outbreak

Gammeldragz · 26/02/2020 11:46

I think the lifelong damage assumption is because ARDS has previously caused long term damage in patients who had it from SARS and other viruses. Obviously it's too soon to know in this case, because it is safe to assume that if a patient gets so sick they end up with ARDS and then recover from the virus, they may have long term lung damage. Presumably from scarring caused by the pneumonia?

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 11:46

Hello, just popping over from Preppers with a book recommendation....

Also - not prepping but if anyone is a total nerd like me and has become really interested in all things virus related lately I asked for relevant book recommendations from a Financial Times book club and got this on my kindle:

Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0099522853/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_oOLvEbKW25TZX

Started reading it yesterday and it is fascinating. It's all about viruses that jump from animals to humans, why it's happening more often now, etc. Non-fiction but written in the most engaging way. I really recommend it for self-isolation reading!

It's quite a big book, 12 hours my kindle says but it's so readable and interesting.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 11:46

UPDATE: Patient is currently located in the MLE camp in the Algerian desert. He has no fever and enjoys good health". He arrived on February 17 from Bertonico, a municipality in the province of Lodi which since February 21 is designated as the outbreak area— #Lombardy region.

Gammeldragz · 26/02/2020 11:47
  • however not because
ofwarren · 26/02/2020 11:49

#CORONAVIRUS- #EU Commission has asked member states to review their pandemic plans due to the #COVID19 coronavirus outbreak

wheresmymojo · 26/02/2020 11:52

Another post I thought you guys might be interested in.

This is an interesting article...one para says

Some countries may decide it’s better not to impede the free flow of people too much, keep schools and businesses open, and forgo the quarantining of cities. “That’s quite a big decision to make with regards to public health,” Dye says, “because essentially, it’s saying, ‘We’re going to let this virus go."

My concern is that I'm getting the impression that this is what the UK Govt are going to choose to do.

There is a strong eugenics, survival of the fittest, small Government ethos in power at the moment. I can imagine there is some wrestling going on behind the scenes between PHE and Govt as to what the response will actually be.

Zorona · 26/02/2020 11:55

so I can’t see us in full on quarantine. But The government could take the position of, close all schools, restrict gatherings- church etc, sports events, cinemas. But they may decide this has too much impact on economy and chose to do not much.

Poppytime · 26/02/2020 11:56

Just as an update if anyone is interested, 111 have confirmed we all need to be swabbed, someone is being sent to our house. God knows what the neighbours will think if they come in full gear! Confused

Zorona · 26/02/2020 11:56

You would think some sort of restrictions would be sensible to stagger the spread at least

EgonSpengler2020 · 26/02/2020 11:58

@goingabitcrazy

Come and join us on www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3824126-Covid-19-Thread-for-HCPs-PH-specialists-Epidemiologists-research-scientists-etc

It's a slow moving thread at the moment, the calm before the storm which will hopefully all blow over!

I'm also a HCP in Wales. I stupidly looked up ICU bed capacity for Wales, apparently Wales has the lowest ratio of ICU beds to population in the whole of the UK... Happy days!!!

sewingsinger · 26/02/2020 11:59

where - I agree however I think the problem in the UK is that we could not put in place the measures that China has, they have a lot of control over their people.

I think we need to remember too that many people are very selfish and don't really care about others. My DD told me yesterday that they boys school next to theirs who have quite a few Chinese/HK pupils, told them not to go home/to from infected areas. Evidently the parents of one of the pupils from HK then flew to a city that was ok and the boy flew to meet them. He has been told not to come to school. Very very selfish behaviour but people will do this I'm afraid. Given this I expect (and I'm not saying this is right) the government will weigh up their options, probably realise they can't lock down many places due to lack of resources and just let it go. The speed at which they have been acting hasn't been good for example no pupil should have gone into school yesterday if they had been in northern Italy.

Porcupineinwaiting · 26/02/2020 11:59

Yes pneumonia can cause permanent lung damage, esp if severe. So what you are saying is that themajority of suffers will have (so far as can be known at this time) no life-long effects from the virus.

I mean, I know it's not as dramatic but still.
