To be worried about coronavirus part 4

idontusuallypanic · 24/02/2020 12:40

I looked and couldn't see another 4th thread.

I'm personally worried this morning as I've heard that two students ds goes to school with have just returned from Milan where cases have just rocketed.

OP posts:
Poppytime · 26/02/2020 08:13

DH and I have been debating calling 111. We don't know if we are being dramatic or not. DS is fine, although had a fever before we went away, so I suspect we all just have what he had, but obviously I don't know for sure. DH is coughing a bit too, hence his work asked him to stay home. We got a train between Milan and Switzerland and back so have been around not to mention the airport.

ChipotleBlessing · 26/02/2020 08:13

@Poppytime you really need to speak to 111 and get you all tested. That chest infection you caught while you’re away could be anything.

People keep saying we must have latent clusters like Italy, but I think they’re unlikely to be extensive. Germany has been randomly testing pneumonia cases for a while now and isn’t picking up uncontrolled spread. Spain have started doing the same. And if we had them in the UK I think Drs would be noticing even without the random testing. Not to say there isn’t low level spread developing, but certainly not at the ‘it’s everywhere’ level some people are concerned about.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 08:14

South Korea says 20,716 people are currently being tested for coronavirus, up from 16,734 this morning. Many of them are being tested as a precaution.

IrenetheQuaint · 26/02/2020 08:15

I like the updates too, it is really useful to have one single thread to follow.

RedToothBrush · 26/02/2020 08:16

Newspapers last night said that UK was going to start random testing ASAP in cases where respiratory illness was found even without travel history.

middleager · 26/02/2020 08:17

I like the updates

Orchidflower1 · 26/02/2020 08:17

Please keep the updates @ofwarren. This an the other threads before it have evolved but so has the situation and lurkers from the previous threads( like me!) find it useful.

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 08:17

@poppytime you have to call 111. The guidance is very clear. People must follow the rules. Your DS should not go to school either, three of you in the family have reportable symptoms.

Hopefully everything is fine and you just have minor colds ut you have to let the experts make that decision.

LittleRen · 26/02/2020 08:24

@Poppytime the guidance is very clear, please follow it.

HRH2020 · 26/02/2020 08:24

I would like the updates to stay here please 👍

KOKOagainandagain · 26/02/2020 08:27

PHE on R4 just. Containment is working. They don't think there are any unknown cases despite random testing. They might in the future use some measures to delay spread but don't know which or when.

I was only half listening but I think that was the gist. Okey dokey Confused

Poppytime · 26/02/2020 08:28

Ok we are calling this morning. I've been keeping everyone in since we got back, it's just there has been such conflicting advice from schools/employers etc. When we first got back we were made to feel over dramatic but now I'm feeling like we have been more reasonable.

ajandjjmum · 26/02/2020 08:40

I agree with what others are saying poppytime - need to be cautious and phone 111.

It's quite a change in mentality for a lot of us, in that we try 'not to bother the doctor' or 'put pressure on the health service', but this is exactly what we need to do at the moment, to try and keep this under control as much as possible.

Grateful for the updates ofwarren.

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 08:41

They (PHE and government in general) don't consider the general public as a possible ally do they?

I was discussing this with the children who are teens and above (I prefaced it with the " good" news that it isn't hitting youngsters as an age range hard. They do also get it about our overall behaviour protecting the vulnerable.)

They jumped in with the 'most people will panic.' So we don't agree in this house! I'm for preparedness. We lack politicians and even doctors tbh who communicate well with ordinary people.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/02/2020 08:42

Good. I wish they'd don't this earlier. It shouldn't have taken Italy being caught short for us to start taking these really simple measures.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/02/2020 08:42

Done

Somerville · 26/02/2020 08:47

We need a Covid-19 topic at this point IMO - half of trending is corona virus which makes it impossible for those needing to avoid the subject for MH reasons. If it’s all in one topic then they can hide the whole thing.

It will also keep all the information and updates together for those of us needing to follow closely because we’re carers of someone immuno-suppressed. Like ofwarren I’m trying to stay ahead of the information curve; even an hour will help.

An additional benefit is that within the topic there can be a designated thread for just chat, without updates, for those like OYBBK who would benefit from that.

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 08:48

I find some updates useful but also feel like OhYouBadBadKitten. For me, too many of them become "noise." I of course appreciate we all have our own styles, I never choose push notifications for example.

Poppytime · 26/02/2020 08:48

DH on phone to 111 - he says they keep trying to kick him off the line, he says 'yes' for Coronavirus and it's just pre recorded spiel and you can't even speak to someone!

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 26/02/2020 08:50

Poppy I hope everything is OK.

I posted on the preppers thread to say I would prefer updates here rather than there but I also agree we need a dedicated topic and the updating may be worthy of a different thread?

BrokenBrit · 26/02/2020 08:50

@Poppytime oh tell me about it! DF came back from N Italy on Sunday and by Sunday night had flu like symptoms and a cough and we STILL haven’t been able to receive any help or guidance let alone a test from 111. Luckily he seems a bit better today, though the dry cough remains. He will continue to self isolate once symptoms go but we are not sure how long for so will ring the GP Confused.

WaterSheep · 26/02/2020 08:52

DF came back from N Italy on Sunday and by Sunday night had flu like symptoms and a cough and we STILL haven’t been able to receive any help or guidance let alone a test from 111.

That's not reassuring considering how early on we are in UK cases. If he isn't able to get advice / treatment, then how will they cope if it does become more widespread.

Motorina · 26/02/2020 08:54

It's also not reassuring as many people will simply not persist which risks cases being missed.

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 08:55

I would then telephone the surgery and ask to speak to a doctor and say you can't get through on 111.

Lweji · 26/02/2020 08:56

I've had fever and a cough and DS is recovering from one. We live in a country that hasn't had any (known) cases yet and we haven't been travelling.
It's hard to tell without tests.
There are some other viruses circulating. We could have had one Corona virus of a different variety.
