idontusuallypanic · 24/02/2020 12:40

I looked and couldn't see another 4th thread.

I'm personally worried this morning as I've heard that two students ds goes to school with have just returned from Milan where cases have just rocketed.

David Abel hasn’t updated since last Thursday. Starting to fear the worst for him and his wife
Hope they are getting good care

AvocadoOwl · 26/02/2020 07:45

There was a very cheery video from David Abel yesterday- they are doing very well.

BentBastard · 26/02/2020 07:45

In the US it's not just the healthcare but the fact that most people (even more than here) won't be able to afford to isolate and with gun culture and potentially empty supermarket shelves, could get messy.

RedToothBrush · 26/02/2020 07:48

Singapore have discovered their source

www.straitstimes.com/singapore/grace-assembly-coronavirus-mystery-solved-mega-cluster-linked-to-2-wuhan-tourists-via-a
Grace Assembly coronavirus mystery solved: Antibody tests linked mega cluster to 2 Wuhan tourists via CNY party and Life Church cluster in a world-first

Outbreak started 19th Jan - Wuhan shut down started 3 days later.

This starts to date things earlier than anyone was paying attention. I think we will find this in Italy too tbh. And probably Iran.

lemonjumper · 26/02/2020 07:48

@NemophilistRebel video updates from David and his son are on their YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UCKydRcHz9jhu_t247j7JLUQ/videos

RedToothBrush · 26/02/2020 07:49

The government is going to have to stick it's hands in it's pockets if it's to stand any chance of slowing the spread and keeping their death rate down. In situations like this it benefits the whole country (not to mention their economy) have cases identified fast.

It's not in Donald Trumps personal interest to do so.

I would not like to be in the US when it kicks off there.

NEW: Croatia reports 2nd case of coronavirus in man who went to Champions League match in Italy t.co/eUoE2b20hL

NotJustACigar · 26/02/2020 07:52

Hi would anyone be so kind as to weigh in on my question from last night, please? I hate to disappoint my friend I'm supposed to be traveling with but don't feel comfortable going... Thank you.

"I am meant to be going skiing for a week in the French Alps next week with an old friend. I'm probably going to cancel the trip. Am I being too cautious do you think? DH has severe asthma and I just don't want to take any unnecessary risks because of this."

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 07:53

I'm sure this is the second one confirmed to have attended the football

NemophilistRebel · 26/02/2020 07:53

@lemonjumper thanks that’s good news

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 07:56

@poppytime if you are back from Milan and your DD has a cough you are required to self isolate and advise 111. Your DC must not under any circumstances go to school.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2020 07:56

I've got a suggestion @ofwarren et al. I can feel my heart rate quicken every time I see the #Breaking. It feels as though an instant emergency has occurred that we need to know right now. But at the same time, people are finding it useful to see numbers and spread.

Why don't we have a separate update thread with case numbers as they come in?

My thoughts are;

This was a thread started about worry and rapidly evolved into a general discussion with people finding it a source a mostly reasonable discussion of risk.

The prep thread is where people need to be really calm and rational and discuss what people can do to get ready.

A separate cases thread would be an ideal partner to these threads.

A few of us have been asking mn for a separate Covid topic so that people can find what they are looking for easily. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/3813298-Coronavirus-topic but I guess, without that, the natural home for it would be "In The News" with lots of signposting to it?

ifonly4 · 26/02/2020 07:57

ofWarren another here that really appreciates updates.

That's worrying in the USA. There are going to be many that don't get tested due to cost. If positive individuals aren't detected, they're more likely to turn up for work, use public transport, shopping etc.

There's a question mark over the rugby for obvious reasons. England has two major race festivals coming up, Gold Cup and Aintree. Don't know about Aintree, but just checked and up to 135,000 can pass through Cheltenham train station on one day, 80,000 use the bus shuttle. The racecourse can take 65,000, but race goers often bring wives, children and friends travelling for a day out in Cheltenham or the Cotswolds. It's a four day meeting.

Hyrana · 26/02/2020 08:00

I live in Singapore along with over 5 million other people. There have been 89 cases and most of them have recovered. I admit I wont go to crowded places for leisure or shopping but I still go tenpin bowling and I did a grocery shop at the weekend.

We are getting temperature checked regularly at offices and leisure facilities and we have been told to wear a mask if we feel unwell and go to the doctor. It is not advised to wear a normal surgical mask for protection.

I was here during SARS and Swine Flu and now this and I am a bit worried but keeping scrupulous hand washing should do it for me.

I have asthma and was a smoker for a long time so any respiratory illness worries me. I am not sure if this thread was about personal concern or global concern so I'll wait a bit

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 08:01

@NotJustACigar France isn't particularly a risk atm (although there were cases reported yesterday). The reality is that with those sorts of countries the risk level is probably similar to being here. However I personally wouldn't want to be travelling atm, particularly if you're flying and then have long ski resort transfers etc.

In addition things are moving very quickly and we don't know what the situation will be at the point at which you want to return.

Others will I'm sure have a different view.

Choux · 26/02/2020 08:01

I agree with @OhYouBadBadKitten. The updates are great but not really related to prepping or staying calm. A separate thread covering news updates and discussion on that would be a good idea.

WaterSheep · 26/02/2020 08:01

So according to CEO of Heathrow, the current measures in place for people returning from affected areas basically amount to.

If a person show symptoms we ask step to one side, and the rest of the passengers are free to go on their way.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 08:03

I will put it wherever people think is best ohyoubadbadkitten I don't mind either way.

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 08:03

I would prefer the updates stay. For those of us who are trying to juggle work with staying updated its tricky enough keeping up with the two main threads (this one and the one in AIBU).

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/02/2020 08:05

Oh, this is the AIBU one - see!! Grin

Echobelly · 26/02/2020 08:06

I'm not scared about threat to me or immediate family but I am just wondering what it's going to be like with lots of people ill/self-isolating and how long it's going to last?

Purely selfishly, it's my DD's bat mitzvah in summer and I'm worried what will happen then if gatherings are being curtailed and/or lots of people are sick? Sad I suppose worst case scenario we'll have a small actual service and the celebrations might be postponed.

ofwarren · 26/02/2020 08:07

BREAKING: South Korea reports 115 new cases of coronavirus, raising total to 1,261 t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Glittercandle · 26/02/2020 08:07

ofwarren I find your updates really help and one of the main reasons I read this thread.

meredithgrey1 · 26/02/2020 08:08

Regarding the health minister in Iran who was diagnosed (the one who was sweating on camera). Lots of the replies on twitter are suggesting it is a lie and he is faking it so that in a few days he can say he is all better again and show how the country have everything under control

They mentioned that theory on the bbc (they weren't suggesting it might be true but were just saying that people thought it, although after days of denying any kind of problem I was surprised when Iran released the info about the health minister testing positive as it seemed like something they'd keep quiet).
Either way it shows a total lack of trust in the government and I think that is a worrying thing to have in this situation because it may mean people are less likely to listen to government advice, present at hospital, report symptoms etc if they have no faith in authorities.

TreesSandSea · 26/02/2020 08:09

I like the updates too.
