To be worried about coronavirus part 4

idontusuallypanic · 24/02/2020 12:40

I looked and couldn't see another 4th thread.

I'm personally worried this morning as I've heard that two students ds goes to school with have just returned from Milan where cases have just rocketed.

OP posts:
Ciwirocks · 26/02/2020 06:43

Just been thinking, if it was as rife here as in the likes of Italy surely doctors would have noticed an increase in people presenting with atypical pneumonia type illnesses as they did in Italy and China?

Italy are spreading it everywhere at the moment, I am worried though that people returning who are not symptomatic from the likes of Milan will go about their day as usual as per PHE advice and potentially cause a big outbreak here. I think the schools that have sent pupils home are being very sensible.

LarkDescending · 26/02/2020 06:52

Ciwirocks I agree.

I don’t believe we have a latent Italy-like outbreak here at this stage.

I am concerned that the public health guidance for those returning here from (especially) Milan/Bergamo isn’t more robust than we have seen so far.

3 new Bahrain cases with links to Iran - diagnosed in the arrivals hall at Bahrain. Looks like they aren’t taking any chances with arrivals. A total of 26 cases there now, all diagnosed in the last 48 hours or so.

Korean Air flight attendant who flew to LA diagnosed with coronavirus

A flight attendant for Korean Air was diagnosed with coronavirus following a trip to Los Angeles, a report said Tuesday.

The employee was working on a flight from Incheon, South Korea to Los Angeles and may have spent some time in the city of Los Angeles before boarding a flight back to Korea, according to KABC-TV.

The person had also worked on a flight from Incheon to Tel Aviv.

I also really appreciate the updates. It's nice to have it all in one place.

The irony that the 2 main news items on the BBC are Coronavirus and the huge waiting times in A+E. But hey we're prepared...

Hugglespuffed · 26/02/2020 07:19

ofwarren I am not posting loads but trying to keep up with this thread when I can, I'm really appreciating the updates. Thank you for doing it.

Poppytime · 26/02/2020 07:29

I'm really appreciating the updates too. We returned from Milan on Sunday evening. Both me and DH work have advised us to stay at home. DD has a cough and a ear infection so at home anyway but don't know what to do about DS. Irony is I got a chest infection last week while I was away and still getting over it now...

BackInTime · 26/02/2020 07:29

I think that over the next few weeks there will be many more cases here, especially if they are actually testing more. It's seems impossible that with all the international travel through places like London Heathrow that the cases will remain low. We also now have so many people have just returned from half term holidays abroad, including many many school trips to Italy and other parts of Europe. DSs school have just returned from a trip, that's over 200 kids plus teachers all back at school and the community.

LarkDescending · 26/02/2020 07:29

I think there will be some new cases coming through in Japan. They have been tracing Japanese ex-Diamond Princess passengers who were released without further quarantine and re-testing at least those with symptoms.

Lillyhatesjaz · 26/02/2020 07:29

I am reading not posting and I appreciate the updates

Sunny360 · 26/02/2020 07:31

I also really appreciate the updates @ofwarren so thanks for taking the time to post them.

Regarding the health minister in Iran who was diagnosed (the one who was sweating on camera). Lots of the replies on twitter are suggesting it is a lie and he is faking it so that in a few days he can say he is all better again and show how the country have everything under control Hmm. He was filmed being interviewed by a women (before his diagnosis) who is apparently also a doctor out there. She is still on tv now so they think it’s suspicious that she is not worried about isolating herself.

Not suggesting that I believe that... just interesting reading the replies!

Achangeisadgoodasarest · 26/02/2020 07:33

@ofwarren please don’t stop updating, I’ve been lurking since the beginning, and really appreciate your efforts. I’m also immune suppressed and am very worried about this.

Personally I think you should keep your son home for as long as possible, it’s just not worth the risk.

Coronavirus: Man receives $3,500 medical bill for test after returning to US from China

A Miami man has received a nearly $3,500 medical bill after getting coronavirus tests following his trip to China.

Osmel Martinez Azcue returned from a work trip last month to China and discovered he was feeling flu-like symptoms. Worried about the coronavirus, the man decided to go to a Florida hospital to get tested, according to the Miami Herald.

Testing revealed Mr Azcue had the flu, not the coronavirus. But his limited health insurance left him with a bill of $3,270 two weeks after his test. He will be responsible for $1,400 of that bill.

"How can they expect normal citizens to contribute to eliminating the potential risk of person-to-person spread if hospitals are waiting to charge us $3,270 for a simple blood test and a nasal swab?" Mr Azcue told the newspaper.

The rest of the article goes on to talk about how even those with medical insurance are exposed because changes to the ACA Trump made allowed insurance companies to roll out plans which screw you at every available opportunity and don't offer full coverage.

Its not pretty reading if you think about the implications

RedToothBrush · 26/02/2020 07:35

If you don't die of coronavirus in the US, it could well bankrupt you. Especially if more than one of your family gets it. And that includes people WITH insurance.

People are going to go NUTS in the US trying to avoid catching it.

WaterSheep · 26/02/2020 07:35

An interesting theory Sunny360

I'm already suspicious that they've already over inflated their recoveries. They claim to have 25 recovered, which is more than South Korea (22) and Japan (23)

Skyejuly · 26/02/2020 07:38

Of Warren I like the updates especially when skim reading.

RedToothBrush · 26/02/2020 07:39

The majority of anti government supporters who are more liberal in Iran are younger. The majority of politicial leaders in Iran are old.

Iran will be worth watching indeed.

Quartz2208 · 26/02/2020 07:42

In another thread a poster summed up at the moment the economic cost of the flu every year, the money pumped into creating and giving out vaccines, treating people and the time off. Up to a billion can be infected each year. Yes the death rate is low but the economic impact is high.
Add in to that potentially the corona virus each year, a separate virus so different vaccine, transmission etc even with the same infection rate and death rate as flu the impact of both being around is massive. Coping with a flu season is a strain on resources coping with a flu and covid season - well you can see the fear

Coupled with the fact it is so new and therefore much easier spread and with a higher mortality rate the issues are clear. Now it’s here it’s going to be difficult not to make it endemic. And we can’t quarantine every year we have not yet seen the implications of that yet

LarkDescending · 26/02/2020 07:43

Iran’s numbers must be massive, surely.

26 Covid-positive passengers have arrived in Bahrain on flights from Iran (directly or indirectly) in two days.

Not to mention those going to Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman...

AvocadoOwl · 26/02/2020 07:44

I think the US healthcare system is a real concern. The government is going to have to stick it's hands in it's pockets if it's to stand any chance of slowing the spread and keeping their death rate down. In situations like this it benefits the whole country (not to mention their economy) have cases identified fast.
