idontusuallypanic · 24/02/2020 12:40

I looked and couldn't see another 4th thread.

I'm personally worried this morning as I've heard that two students ds goes to school with have just returned from Milan where cases have just rocketed.

Yeah though of course the cases that are recorded are only those that are symptomatic. Otherwise presumably they wouldn’t have tested them? So I wonder how long you can have it with no temperature? Was the longest gap from exposure to symptoms 24 days? But most seem to get the symptoms sooner after exposure than that it seems ...

BREAKING: #Romania reports 1st case of #coronavirus. The infected came back from Italy 3 weeks ago, before the outbreak Even started in Italy.

BREAKING: 1 case of #Coronavirus in #Madrid, #Spain

Frazzled2207 · 25/02/2020 22:14

With all the new cases springing up from people who've been to northern Italy it is surely now a 100% likelihood that it's in the UK (as well as the previous cases I mean) Just not detected yet.

Bno newsroom @bnodesk
San Francisco declares state of emergency to help prepare for an outbreak of coronavirus; there are currently no confirmed cases in the city - SF Chronicle

Uh. Huh. Wot?!!

As I said yesterday, I'm very wary of the US's figures...

As I said yesterday, I'm very wary of the US's figures...

I may have misread (because it sounds unbelievable) but is it right that the USA currently only having the capability to test for coronavirus in a handful of states? So is their number of cases just meaningless at this point?

I could be wrong.

Haven’t RTFT but I’ve just seen on the news 4/5 people get it mildly and recover.

What I can’t find out is why it affects the fifth person so severely? Is it that they’re immunocompromised? Because there seems to have been some cases where people have died who didn’t seem immunocompromised (I appreciate I don’t have the full story). Just wondering what it is that makes some susceptible.

PuzzledObserver · 25/02/2020 22:24

A GP practice in Crediton has “taken precautions” because a patient attended who had recently travelled to an affected area:

Hugglespuffed · 25/02/2020 22:25

festive I think that they are still trying to figure out the full facts about why those who die from it die. I hope they can figure stuff out soon.

First Coronavirus Case Found in Spain’s Madrid Region: El Mundo

A 24-year-old has tested positive for the #coronavirus in the Madrid region, El Mundoreports. The person had been on a trip to Italy, newspaper says patient being treated at Carlos III hospital in the city.

idontusuallypanic · 25/02/2020 22:30

I'm pretty annoyed at the letter I got back from school today.

"Theres is absolute no cause for concern over coronavirus"

Two pupils there have just fucking returned from Milan. I think that's a very bold and stupid statement.

Only 4 out 100 facilities have testing kits.

Because of private health insurance, only people who can afford to go to the doctor will do. If you have not got health insurance, you aren't going to get tested because you can't afford to.... Unlike in places where there is universal access to health care like Italy...

TreesSandSea · 25/02/2020 22:33

Problem is idontusuallypanic, the response of schools etc is only as good as the information they are given by PHE, and that, as we have seen, does not always seem up to date. It feels as though there has been some sort of communal shrugging in cabinet - Que Sera etc

Ciwirocks · 25/02/2020 22:34

idontusuallypanic That is a very brave statement to make! Personally I think Milan will see lots of cases over the next few days and the advice to not self isolate unless you have symptoms will change. I fully intend on staying away from relatives who have been there recently despite what PHE say

NemophilistRebel · 25/02/2020 22:35

I am pregnant and fly to Europe (currently mom affected area) on Friday

Should I be going? I was all for it but now worrying about being in airport and plane with so many potential people having travelled from Madrid and other seriously affected parts of Italy

FestiveBake · 25/02/2020 22:37

Thanks Huggles. I hope they can too - obviously being immunocompromised will be one of the concerns but I wonder if there’s something else that makes people susceptible that hasn’t either been found or made known yet.

meredithgrey1 · 25/02/2020 22:41

The healthcare system in the US hadn't even crossed my mind. They have such a bizarre attitude to healthcare if even in scenarios where there is a serious public health concern, people still have to pay.

Ozgirl75 · 25/02/2020 22:41

Advice from schools will probably change. We are in Australia and had our long summer holiday in January. The first information we received from school towards the end of Jan said “don’t worry, etc etc, just wash your hands, stay off school if you’re sick”, but three days later we got the message “self isolate for 2 weeks if you’ve come back from China” (which affected 120 families in our school alone)

Interestingly we haven’t had any new updates since, and Australia has had very few new cases which surprises me.

RedToothBrush · 25/02/2020 22:45

If ever you want a good argument for universal health care, a pandemic is a good way to demonstrate it.

A virus like this is going to be hard to avoid regardless of whether you are rich or poor.

Speaking of which has Johnson been sighted in public lately?

TreesSandSea · 25/02/2020 22:46

DH suggested today that maybe he’s retreated to the ‘Bunker’ to wait it out. Not been seen for weeks, as far as I know ..

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 22:49

The guy who is from the Dutch -german border is in a critical condition apparently.

Maybe hiding in another fridge?

yolofish · 25/02/2020 22:54

Our PM has not been seen for weeks... I think that's what he might call 'delegation'.
