To be worried about coronavirus part 4

I looked and couldn't see another 4th thread.

I'm personally worried this morning as I've heard that two students ds goes to school with have just returned from Milan where cases have just rocketed.

OP posts:

The Tenerife case was an Italian doctor.

The case in Catalonia is a woman who had been to Italy.

The thing here is - are they being picked up because people are merely looking more closely with interest at people who have been to Italy or is there a very large outbreak in Italy that has been going on for some time and has only just been discovered?

LarkDescending · 25/02/2020 21:00

There must be a huge outbreak in Italy, surely?

The Tenerife cases, the Catalonia case, the Algeria case, the Swiss case, the new German case - Italy appears to be leaking virus in every direction.

Probably both surely? I don't know what other countries policies are but here you wouldn't have been tested if you had symptoms and had been to Italy until today (unless you got extremely ill I suppose) so if other countries had similar policies the people you mentioned in Tenerife and Catalonia and others wouldn't have been found (again, unless very ill).
But equally, given that there are now lots of cases seemingly being exported from Italy, there must be quite a large outbreak, unless all these people were at the same event/hotel etc.

Glittercandle · 25/02/2020 21:02

I am so surprised we don’t have more cases here yet (UK), are there many who have it but just haven’t been tested?

RedToothBrush · 25/02/2020 21:03

Barcelona case
The patient is a 36-year-old Italian national living in Barcelona, Guix said. The patient traveled to Bergamo and Milan, Italy, from Feb. 12 until Sunday. She is now in isolation in a hospital.

And Austria
The two people diagnosed with coronavirus in the Tyrol region of Austria are both Italian citizens, the regional government press office said in a statement.

The patients are a woman and a man, both 24-years old, originally from the Lombardy region close to Bergamo.

Both are being treated in hospital in Innsbruck, Austria, and are in good condition. They were in Lombardy until Friday, and then drove to Innsbruck, according to the statement. Both are no longer running fevers, and they will stay in quarantine until the weekend.

And one of the French cases
Case No. 14 is a French man returning from Lombardy; he's being hospitalized in Auvergne Rhône Alpes

And the Croatia case was connected with Italy too.

RedToothBrush · 25/02/2020 21:09

Probably both surely?
That's my thought.

Are there many who have it but just haven’t been tested
Also my thought.

Especially since 111 were only interested in anyone who had gone to 'the right countries' even when we knew there was a large outbreak in Italy. We have been much slower to respond to reports than other countries.

Our slow response makes us more likely to be days behind any outbreak.

One case in Sicily and there's been panic buying in Malta.

Iran’s Deputy Health Minister has tested positive for the virus.

LarkDescending · 25/02/2020 21:25

Looking at the containment area map I’d have thought Milan the most likely entry point for the virus into Italy, with onward spread from there.

LarkDescending · 25/02/2020 21:27

The Sicilian case is from Bergamo - another place which is cropping up a lot.

Is this a new case? It won't translate on my phone so I can't read it

Mordred · 25/02/2020 21:35

Bergamo is the main out-of-town airport for Milan

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 21:37

#JORDAN- Jordanian Health Department quarantines 5 Jordanians who came from South Korea and 8 others who came from #Italy, on suspicion of being infected with the #Coronavirus.

minniethemooch · 25/02/2020 21:39

I think those cases are in Germany , close to the Dutch border. They had contact with Chinese citizens .

LarkDescending · 25/02/2020 21:41

My Dutch is rusty(!) but I think the article is about cases near the Dutch-German border, but on the German side (at Erkelenz).

flowerycurtain · 25/02/2020 21:42

There's a lot of ski holidays that fly from Bergamo. We did last year.

Ciwirocks · 25/02/2020 21:42

No checks on entry to Manchester airport from Milan today. There is no way this virus isn’t already here, we are doing nothing to stop it from spreading 🤷‍♀️

LarkDescending · 25/02/2020 21:42

Cross-posted re the Dutch situation.

Re Italy, it seems to me that the containment of small nearby towns is an irrelevance if there is significant evidence of viral spread in the Milan-Bergamo area.

RedToothBrush · 25/02/2020 21:45

Channel 4 news @channel4news
^Jon Snow is tonight in self-isolation after his return from Iran, covering the country's elections.

He's following government guidance for those recently returned from areas with high numbers of coronavirus infections - and will be staying at home for the next two weeks.^

@jonsnowC4, his producer and cameraman, returned yesterday from covering the Iran elections for Channel 4 News and following Department of Health guidelines have gone into self-isolation for the next 14 days.

None of the team are currently showing any symptoms of COVID-19 but the official advice is to self-isolate regardless.

Meanwhile Tom Cruise 'fled' Venice for the UK according to reports.

Clearly we have superhuman coronavirus repelling borders.

disappointed101 · 25/02/2020 21:48

That Dutch report says that they are on the German side of the border BUT have been in Limburg which is in the Netherlands. I was surprised there have been no reports in NL yet

LightsOnNotIn · 25/02/2020 21:50

TreesSandSea Thanks for posting the symptoms list for cases. I found it reassuring. My family went skiing in French Alps last week. Both my partner and I got a sore throat, then runny nose around Thursday, whilst still there. My partner seems ok now. I have a dry cough still. My son is fine. I didn't want to ring 111 because neither of us had/have fever, and fever seems to be an important indicator of covid19. I also didn't want to waste anyone's time.

percheron67 · 25/02/2020 21:51

A friend of a friend flew back from Korea (Seoul) yesterday and they were not checked at all on landing at Heathrow. Just told "watch out for signs and see a Dr if you feel ill!!

TreesSandSea · 25/02/2020 21:54

Glad it was helpful and yes I found it really useful too. the fever thing is interesting- fever reported in 88-98% of cases, depending on which study you look at. Most common symptom. So that is helpful, I think, as so many of us are ill at the moment and it is easy to get worried.

BackInTime · 25/02/2020 21:56

DS has just returned from school ski trip in Italy although not in any of the areas on lockdown. School have said just be vigilant and to self isolate if any symptoms. He is pretty tired after travel and a full on week away. I am a bit worried to say the least.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 25/02/2020 22:00

If fever is a main trigger for being investigated/quarantined it is likely to be high in the symptoms.
