To be worried about coronavirus part 4

idontusuallypanic · 24/02/2020 12:40

I looked and couldn't see another 4th thread.

I'm personally worried this morning as I've heard that two students ds goes to school with have just returned from Milan where cases have just rocketed.

OP posts:
Mordred · 25/02/2020 18:13

"They do have anti bacterial gel in the office."

Will that help? It's a virus. Secondary infection prevention?

StormBaby · 25/02/2020 18:14

I went to London 14 days ago on public transport and have now started to feel unwell today Confused

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 18:15

There are a lot of other bugs going round at the moment @StormBaby. What are your symptoms?

middleager · 25/02/2020 18:24

There are lots of bugs, which doesnt help.

My son came back on Sat from a North Italy ski trip. Half the group got Norovirus, although we were assured the outbreak 2 days previously before ours flew out (which affected 40 kids, some on drips) was clear. It wasn't.

The school isn't asking those students to stay home.

However, today I feel ill, sick, headache (my son was the half who didn't get Noro - maybe he's just a carrier?)

But with so many bugs, it's hard to tell.

NathanNathan · 25/02/2020 18:31

StormBaby I'm in London right now, I live here. About to get on the tube. I have a cough.

I don't think at the moment that is enough to worry. Look after yourself.

Notstrongandstable · 25/02/2020 18:31

Mordred- if the gel has 70% alcohol/ethanol as the active ingredient it will kill viruses.
Check the label though, some of them are different active ingredients or lower concentrations and therefore useless

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 18:31

UPDATE: The 2 infected in Austria are Italians. The hotel is completely isolated. #COVID19 #Österreich #austria

diddl · 25/02/2020 18:32

It doesn't help that it's the time of year for people to be coughing & getting colds!

I was at a UK airport a couple of weeks ago & seem to have had a sore throat & runny nose since then!

RedToothBrush · 25/02/2020 18:34

Unclear who the 11th death was but

www.thelocal.it/20200225/latest-deaths-coronavirus-italy/amp?__twitter_impression=true
Angelo Borelli, the chief of the regional Civil Protection agency has said that the three people who died on Tuesday were all elderly.

Their ages have been given as 83, 84 and 91 years old.

And

On Monday evening a 62-year-old man on dialysis from the north-western region of Lombardy, reports said on Monday evening.

It came hours after three other men were confirmed to have died on Monday, all of them men in their 80s from Lombardy.

Another man and two women died over the weekend.

At least three of the deceased had other serious health problems, and most were over 75.

yolofish · 25/02/2020 18:38

TBH, I'm not liking the "they were old and otherwise ill" narrative.

That's fine if you or your loved ones are not old and/or otherwise ill, but very worrying if you/they fall into that category.

Stircrazyschoolmum · 25/02/2020 18:41

Sorry if this has already been asked, but has anyone else wondered why the Worldometer feed has stopped updating today? Is it the sheer speed and volume of change?

I have to confess I have no idea who updates it!

ofwarren what source do you use? You seem to know everything before the media! (And I thank you for sharing as I’m a data fiend!) xx

GorkyMcPorky · 25/02/2020 18:43

Sorry if this has already been asked, but has anyone else wondered why the Worldometer feed has stopped updating today? Is it the sheer speed and volume of change?

It is for me. Up to 80,419.

Stircrazyschoolmum · 25/02/2020 18:46

Sorry gorky. I mean the live news feed bit that gives all the context.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 18:46

I use a mixture of BNO newsroom, Reuters, AP and manually searching for coronavirus in twitter and manically refreshing 😂

GorkyMcPorky · 25/02/2020 18:47

Ah I haven't looked at that bit.

Porcupineinwaiting · 25/02/2020 18:47

I get what you are saying @yolofish and I have 3 close relatives in the danger category myself, but it is very normal for the sick elderly to have their final thread cut by a winter infection. I hope my dad dad doesn't die of coronavirus but if he doesnt, he'll die of kidney failure in a few months time.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 18:47

Means I get it from local news sources if I search #coronavirus

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 18:51

URGENT: #ITALY— says they receive 300.000 911 calls a day in the #Coronavirus epicentre, #Lombardy (112 in italy)

Stircrazyschoolmum · 25/02/2020 18:53

ofwarren it’s appreciated. My (mainly) sensible head says this is nothing to be worried about. But I like to have the data to make informed decisions and potentially not get taken by surprise. I don’t like the Iran situation.. seems very suspect.

Ontopofthesunset · 25/02/2020 18:54

Well, even if you are old (not so sure about unwell and I guess it depends how unwell and with what) you still have a much higher chance of surviving the virus than dying, according to those early Chinese estimates on Worldometer. They suggest that just under 15% of cases in the over 80s to date have resulted in death - meaning 85% of over 80 year olds have survived. Of course I don't like the look of those odds, but they are far from a certain death sentence. Many over 80 year olds have multiple health problems and in fact if you are over 85 in the UK, according to some stats I found, you have a 1 in 7 chance of dying in the next year of any cause. Older people are vulnerable to lots of things and this is a horrible thing that they are vulnerable to too.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 25/02/2020 18:55

The Italy recovered vs death rate is horrific. I assume that’s because it takes along time to get recovered status, but if it takes a long time to kill you as well, the numbers remain disturbing. I’d like to think that’s because they haven’t identified the whole cluster yet, but I also have to bear in mind the WHO talking about no iceberg.
Could it also be that the cluster is for some reason made up of more vulnerable people for some reason- I seem to recall some were in hospital before virus was confirmed, or am I clutching at straws.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 18:56

URGENT; #ITALY— “Triage Tents” now set up in #Sicilia for patients who exhibit flu-like symptoms to avoid passage to the emergency room & is creating pressure-negative rooms. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 #DoingItRight!

UntamedWisteria · 25/02/2020 19:01

DS has just returned from skiing in Austrian Tyrol. Does anyone know what resort the 2 people diagnosed were in?

TokyoSushi · 25/02/2020 19:03

It's the Grand Europa Hotel in Innsbruck according to Google
