To be worried about coronavirus part 4

idontusuallypanic · 24/02/2020 12:40

I looked and couldn't see another 4th thread.

I'm personally worried this morning as I've heard that two students ds goes to school with have just returned from Milan where cases have just rocketed.

OP posts:

I don't understand why unnecessary flights didn't just stop.
Can you define an unnecessary flight?

Parker231 · 25/02/2020 17:16

If flights were cancelled the UK would come to a halt pretty quickly. Food arrived into the UK by air as do imports and exports. I would imagine the situation would have to deteriorate significantly for anything near that to happen.

My daughters sister school has just sent pupils home after displaying cold symptoms having returned from a skiing trip.

SilverHawk · 25/02/2020 17:18

Kettle , I still think Brighton is worth watching due to commuters to London. Gatwick is on the same line too.
IIRC the first batch of doctors went back to work on the 20th February after 14 days of self isolation. Some of that batch had treated patients and been in a CCG meeting at Hove.
Let's see how good the containment strategy worked.
There's also the chance that the 14 wasn't long enough (as we now know :()

RedToothBrush · 25/02/2020 17:20

You mean Hong Kong in China which has closed schools for some time?

That Hong Kong?

ChipotleBlessing · 25/02/2020 17:22

That’s just outrageous fucking xenophobia from the nursery. Why would someone travelling from, say, the Netherlands (zero known cases), be more risk than a UK resident (13 known cases)?

Canshopwillshop · 25/02/2020 17:25

I’m getting concerned for my 2 DC’s aged 15 and 13 who both have mild asthma. Sorry if this sound utterly dumb and I know no one can tell me for definite but would you consider mild asthma to be a pre-existing condition which would put them in the higher risk group? Neither of them have had to be hospitalised with it (fingers crossed) and it is generally managed quite well with inhalers.

UPDATE: Italy reports 39 new cases of coronavirus, or 91 new cases so far today, raising total to 322 t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Wow, this thread was a great place to chat and share information but have people swallowed a '' let's get really shitty and pick apart like a forensic PhD examiners every single comment any poster makes out loud on a chat forum PILL ''.. Get over yourselves.

'' unnecessary flights '' ie people travelling for ski trips, holidays.

Not food flights or essential medical stuff.
I appreciate my thoughts will be deeply flawed, that's because I'm not an expert in aviation and travel. Confused I'm just chatting and thinking out loud.

'' really? Is this difficult to understand ''..

^^

Is this patronising and rude comment necessary?
Is this your thread? Shall we ask mnhq to stop people from commenting on here?
Unless they reach Your deigned level of expertise?

Yes, I understand that one person can spread the virus to someone who hasn't travelled, but I also understand why they are trying to highlight the people who have travelled part.

Or maybe it was the wedging in of 'xenophobia' that totally Threw me. Confused

Snowdropdelight · 25/02/2020 17:32

Chiplote I don't know see it like that.

Airports have people mixing from all over the world no matter where you have visited from or are going to.

It is travel and travelers who are spreading it.

salty78 · 25/02/2020 17:34

My DS is going on the school ski trip to northern Italy, flying into Milan, first week of April. Wondering what's going to happen as travel advice not still changed but all these schools are closing now after Italian ski trips. I don't mind him going so much but it's just the risk of being stuck there quarantined in a hotel or having to self-isolate when he gets home. Bonkers.

lemonjumper · 25/02/2020 17:38

This from the Guardian is a bit Confused

"Elsewhere, Penair School in Cornwall was thrown into confusion at 9.30am today when the headmaster, James Davidson, sent home a group of children and teachers who had been on a half-term school trip to the Lombardy region where the coronavirus has hit Italy hardest.

Davidson said that on the advice of Public Health England they should remain at home “to self-quarantine for 14 days”, but just hours later he reversed the order saying that updated PHE advice meant they could return."

RedToothBrush · 25/02/2020 17:39

Italy stopped all flights from China.

It still has an outbreak.

We don't know where it came from.

It could have come from anywhere in the world. Possibly somewhere which isn't reporting cases.

How does stopping flights from everywhere help?

We are not self sufficient as an island.

How does that help people whose mortgage relies on travel and travellers.

We Can Not just shut down as an island because we are too connected to the rest of the world.

FourTeaFallOut · 25/02/2020 17:43

Neither of them have had to be hospitalised with it (fingers crossed) and it is generally managed quite well with inhalers.

No, I wouldn't worry too much, make sure they are taking their preventer inhalers religiously though, teens are notorious for not bothering.

Plantherd · 25/02/2020 17:58

@lemonjumper

I thought even without symptoms if you have recently visited quarantined areas of Italy to self isolate? Was the head teacher wrong to then say they can go back in?

BREAKING: #Kuwait Ministry of Health: increase the number of confirmed cases of #coronavirus to 9

dingit · 25/02/2020 18:00

My son travels to/from LGW every day. He's getting bored of me nagging to wash his hands. They do have anti bacterial gel in the office.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 18:00

Coronavirus updates:

  • 4 more Americans test positive after being evacuated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship

HasaDigaEebowai · 25/02/2020 18:00

If you've been to one of the quaratined towns then you have to self isolate even if you have no symptoms. If you have been to northern Italy in general then you have to self isolate only if you have symptoms. The ski trip children are unlikely to have been to one of the quarantined towns.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 18:03

NEW: France reports 2 new cases of coronavirus t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Canshopwillshop · 25/02/2020 18:08

@FourTeaFallOut - thank you for your reply. Yes, I’m constantly nagging them to take their brown inhalers - even more so at the moment!

lemonjumper · 25/02/2020 18:09

Yes, that's true Hasa. They were in the worst hit region but not necessarily in one of the quarantined towns.

ofwarren · 25/02/2020 18:09
