What could you NOT do, even if your life depended on it?

LIGHTHEARTED

After commenting on another thread that my worst nightmare would be to have to dive underwater & resurface somewhere else. You always see it in films & they look like they’ll run out of air. Or they do it on Bushtucker Trials.

I can’t even watch it on tv / a film - gives me such anxiety. It is related to a PTSD issue, so that makes it maybe a bit more understandable, but I’m not sure I could do it, even if my life depended on it. Obviously, I’d have to try... 😬

What, if anything, would you struggle with?

@Ponoka7 you have clearly put a bit of thought into the king of crabs scenario

@TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 I am convinced I'd be fantastic at zombie killing - knife in the skull type. No running, just bashing. Hiding too.

Caving or pot holing (are they the same thing), I'm claustrophobic and even typing this is giving me the heeby jeebies.

Ludways · 24/02/2020 15:55

Ha ha, just read through and realise my caving thing it totally unoriginal, lol

Spudlet · 24/02/2020 16:01

I’m fine with heights, horses, dogs and reversing, also able to read a map and can pluck and draw birds. So as long as someone else deals with any cave-based zombie shenanigans (and zombie spiders as well please), I’d like to think I have a place in the post-zombie apocalypse world?

TitchyP · 24/02/2020 16:03

Jump off anything high or squeeze through anything small.

Swim underwater.

Eat an insect.

Cuddle an octopus.

All quite common fears it seems!

pinboard · 24/02/2020 16:08

I guess I'd be surprised at what I could do if my life really depended upon it, but things I'd really rather not do involve fears which I didnt have pre-children but do now (much more risk averse now!)

so, heights, falling, deep water, fast speed (eg a car doing 100mph)
all things I coped with fine until my mid 30s when my kids arrived.

I can eat squid / trotters / tripe etc but would baulk at many insects. And I've never been good with spiders of any size really.

ColourMyDreams · 24/02/2020 16:12

Touch a spider.
Just thinking about it gives me the willies.

Lindy2 · 24/02/2020 16:15

Lift anything heavy.

I am embarrassing feeble. Fit and healthy in all other ways but a complete lightweight when it comes to lifting anything. When my DD was 2 she used to carry the shopping bags inside for me because she was better at it than I was. 😂

PrincessHoneysuckle · 24/02/2020 16:17

Be locked in a room full of spiders

painintheholeSIL · 24/02/2020 16:18

I have loads😂 I couldn't do anything to do with water, spiders, snakes, any sort of reptile, pull myself up with my hands(zero upper body strength), anything to do with heights. Pretty much everything op have mentioned here too.
So basically In almost any situation I would just have to dieGrin

Davros · 24/02/2020 16:20

Separate an egg. I tried it once, set myself up with bowls in the sink, thought I was on Masterchef. The whole lot went straight down the plughole. Never again.
Sewing too. I had adult lessons a couple of years ago because I never learnt when I was younger. I couldn't even thread the needle in the machine. There was an 80 year old woman in the class making a perfect lined coat.
Whistle. I can't do it.
I'm not scared, I just can't do them.

ifancyagreencard · 24/02/2020 16:21

I'm 48 and I can't tie my shoelaces the "proper" way. God knows how many hours DM and DDad spent trying to teach me.

I now run Rainbow unit. When they are learning to tie shoelaces, I retire gracefully to the kitchen Grin

glitterbiscuits · 24/02/2020 16:22

No upper body strength either. I will have to let go.

I am going to start a thread about improving this!

weegiemum · 24/02/2020 16:24

Pretty much anything physical. I'm disabled and couldn't run from an angry lion, I'd just have to be the one that sacrifices themselves so everyone else can get to safety.
I could do the diving and swimming stuff though, including scuba. Just not at all capable on land!

villainousbroodmare · 24/02/2020 16:41

Go into space. I would love to experience weightlessness but the utter loneliness of leaving the Earth is horrifying to me. Plus I have a bit of a dread of having finite supplies of stuff like, y'know, air.
Actually the worst would be going into space and having to make some sort of mathematical calculation while under pressure to guarantee our safe return.

pinboard · 24/02/2020 16:47

Be interesting to know if we were all always like this, or if we get more risk averse post-kids - it would make sense if we did, evolution wise?

NoShitHemlock · 24/02/2020 16:50

I can't run to save myself.

During the zombie apocalypse I am going to taste delicious Grin

ssd · 24/02/2020 16:54

Lift a worm.

Mookie81 · 24/02/2020 17:01

feet like root ginger
GrinGrin so funny!

QueenOfOversharing · 24/02/2020 17:06

@Mookie81 the ugliest feet I have ever seen. Attached to the ugliest person.

My dream is to do a sky dive.

But to come face to face time with a clown would give me so much stress it would possibly kill me.
I can't even look at colouring books with them on! There is a valid reason! Most people say it is ridiculous. This is very outing. When I was 4 I went to a party and the clown was making a toy ferret look real. He then threw it at me. Fear since then!

When there was all that palaver with killer clowns I spent most of my time in an anxious mess!

I was taking my kids to sch, the night before there was a clown on the roundabout I had to cross.
I said to my eldest if there is a clown take the kids and run, I will chase him away.
As we got closer to the roundabout my breathing went and shaking started. My eldest said 'u running with us mum' i was just like 'yep'

I am actually quite a strong person, not much scares me. If I hear a noise in house I will leave DP asleep and go and investigate. Put a picture of a clown in front of me and I want to cry.
I have jumped a few times whilst typing this because every time I type the 'C' word the little emoji pops up!

puppymouse · 24/02/2020 17:12

Diving through tiny caves or underwater passage ways. I am claustrophobic and terrified of going underwater. I think I would have a heart attack tbh.

Mulledwineinajug · 24/02/2020 17:19

Except Havendilemma, you didn’t say ‘what exactly do you find frightening about that?’, did you? You said Hmm HmmHmm, which is nasty.

I think this thread shows that people are frightened of many different things. I’m sure you feel big and clever because what frightens me half to death doesn’t faze you. But there might be something that you find terrifying and you don’t bat an eyelid. Don’t worry, when we find out what it is, I won’t sneer at you. Just like I’m not sneering at people who are frightened of clowns or buttons.

Spudlet · 24/02/2020 17:19

pinboard It’s only anecdata of course, but quite a few riders talk about losing their mojo a bit after becoming mothers, and needing to rediscover their bravery. Not everyone of course, but enough that I think you could call it a thing?

I don’t know if I’ve become more risk-averse, but I think my perception of risk has become more acute? So I’ll still do things, but I’m more aware that they might be a bit risky, of that makes sense.

Oysterbabe · 24/02/2020 17:19

I just couldn't handle any kind of really stressful, life threatening situation. Whenever I watch disaster films and they spend 2 hours in peril I constantly think I'd rather just die.
