AIBU?

What could you NOT do, even if your life depended on it?

LIGHTHEARTED

After commenting on another thread that my worst nightmare would be to have to dive underwater & resurface somewhere else. You always see it in films & they look like they’ll run out of air. Or they do it on Bushtucker Trials.

I can’t even watch it on tv / a film - gives me such anxiety. It is related to a PTSD issue, so that makes it maybe a bit more understandable, but I’m not sure I could do it, even if my life depended on it. Obviously, I’d have to try... 😬

What, if anything, would you struggle with?

Hold a spider or let it walk on me.

I start screaming hysterically as soon as I see one even if it’s on the other side of the room.

After physio assessment today I've thought of another: listen to anyone describe or show me a wound etc. My DS had over 20 surgeries & I can't listen to the surgeon after, or look. They know me so well they get a fan & I gave to lie down as I'm a fainter. So anything seeing blood or stitches 🤢

And another. I'm dieting & was doing really well, but mood not great (at physio had to explain how I broke a vertebra, and broke & dislocated my ankle 22 years ago - it was horrific DV related while I was pregnant, so I came out feeling ughhhhhhh) and had to do food shop. I cannot resist chocolate, Ben & Jerry's & crisps when I'm feeling sorry for myself. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Swim or dive in deep dark water. I'm a qualified scuba diver but in an early diving outing I encountered a sudden sharp drop off in the ocean floor, there was an ocean shelf that we (my diving group) weren't aware of and I felt myself sinking down quickly into lower depths. It took a (panicked) minute or two to achieve neutral buoyancy again. The water was significantly darker and colder down there and it felt simply immense to me, like a universe of dark cold blackness! I've stuck to simple shallower, warm water diving ever since!

Also, I hate driving over mountain passes (these days I refuse and my lovely DH does it.) We lived in the Pacific Northwest of the USA for some years and we had to drive over Washington State and Oregon mountain passes annually to visit family. It got progressively scary for me year after year, and on one occasion we saw a large lorry have to use one of the runaway truck ramps - a terrifying sight to behold! I've added a link to a youtube video of this in case people don't know what I"m talking about!

@Rainbunny I don't understand - how the hell does he get back down??? Is it because he was going too fast for the bend? Is it wrong that I just want to do it??

I could never go near a caterpillar or have it crawl on me Shock I'm terrified of them have had this phobia all my life.

QueenOfOversharing - You're braver than me!!

He doesn't get back down - at least by not himself! Basically I understand that over these mountain passes which are fairly bendy and obviously downwards once you're over the top, the brakes on big 18 wheelers can burn out easily and do so fairly often, too much speed is usually a factor. There are tow companies who have the equipment to bring the trucks back down, it can cost a few thousand dollars but better than hurtling down the mountainside to your doom!

@Rainbunny ahhhh ok. I thought he had to reverse down which looked far scarier!

QueenOfOversharing - All I can say is that watching a large truck do that in front of our eyes was an absolutely insane experience - like watching an extreme action movie with all of the OMG fear but none of the fun!

@Rainbunny oh wow & I guess it doesn't happen that often, so all the more scary when suddenly you're there, watching. Are they trained in it or just know it's their only option if it happens? I never knew about this, so I'm fascinated.

Be in any kind of confined space, either crawling through it or hiding there.

Jumping from somewhere very high or walking over a plank/rope bridge/glass bridge with a massive drop underneath.

Anything to do with spiders.

I can't walk up a hill without puffing or being the slowest in my family, even though I run 16-20 miles a week, do interval training, lost 12kg and keep pretty fit. So irritating.

A hand stand or cartwheel.

I THINK I could squeeze through a narrow cavern (think potholing or caving like that poor football team of kids) but thinking about it makes my elbows feel funny and i have to stretch my arms out!

I had no idea I was scared of so many things. I think I’ve tried too many things that I never want to do again. Would have to avoid spiders, flying beetles, may bugs, small boats big waves, swimming in sea at night, awful scream fest where they put you in stood up coffin (horrors), any similar small spaces, big drops when other people driving, horse jumping, those tyres they pull after boats (worst bruise ever). Oh dear. Might as well stay safe in lock down.

Eat a slug?!!! What. That’s gonna be on everyone’s list now isn’t it. Along with eating anything vile. Like faeces or phlegm.
