Hi, im looking for some help, my daughter is 7, and has been in a lot of pain in her lower left side of her abdomen. It came on out the blue last Sunday night and has got worse. We have visited the hospital twice and the doctor twice. They have taken bloods but couldn't see an issue. Her tummy hurts when being pressed, urine seems clear. No heavy lifting, not muscle pull or anything. I'm honestly at a loss, pain medication doesn't do much, doctor is going to check which bloods were taken and call me after lunchtime. She's passing poo and wind. This pain leaves her crying, doubled over. Any ideas?? Thanks

I had an impaction after shattering a bone and a lot of morphine. They sent me home with oxycodone and I ended up not taking it as the bowels were worse than the surgery pain. I was told 8 sachets a day. Has your DD been given adult or kids movicol? If she's on adult they may be saying less as she's younger. Try calling the ward as others have suggested. Your poor DD Thanks

Just checking in. Are you back at A and E OP?

Had I been on earlier (later last night) I would have said call OOH GP.

Feelingsolost1 · 26/02/2020 10:29

Morning, thanks for all your concern. Dd settled and ended up fast asleep. I put her in bed with me so if there were any issues I would be there.
She slept through - in fact she slept for 12 hours.
She's up now and still complaining of pain, she's just had her medication and her movicol. That's a good point, at home we have the paediatric stuff, but perhaps in hospital she was given the adult? I'm going to call my Gp and request a call back to ask some questions.
Her urine should be back from the labs today. Stomach still feels very distended and hard to touch, but the lump has gone down.. Dh has said perhaps it was the lump of stool being pushed through?
This is day 4 of no poo now.
Maybe the doctor will prescribe something stronger to get moving.
I'm at a loss, I just want her back to normal, back to school, she misses her friends.
Thank you all again, so much x

Fingers crossed she is feeling well again.

Have you tried this? I was taught it in baby massage classes and still have to do it occasionally now she is a teen.

Unfortunately the oromorph causes constipation so while it gave relief from the symptoms it contributes to the root of the problem.

My DD has had chronic constipation for years, and in a situation like this glycerine suppositories are our go to. It is not fun for anyone but is effective. As others have said available from the chemist. She will probably need moral support on the loo but last time we did this my daughter commented immediately on how much better she felt after first (of several!) giant poos.

Then a long road to recovery as once the bowel has stretched to accommodate a big poo it is easy for one to build up again. Once the blockage is cleared you will need to continue giving maintenance laxatives long term to allow bowel to shrink back to normal size. For my DD this is one movicol every evening +5ml sennacot syrup.

Over time we found there are some foods that seem to upset her bowels and current offenders list is babybel and Capri sun/fruit shoots.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/02/2020 11:43

Try and get her up and moving as it gets the interview working. Suppositories Arne that effective with higher up blockages. Nor a micro lax enemas. They don't go far enough up.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/02/2020 11:43

Intestines

1forsorrow · 26/02/2020 11:45

As a sufferer from constipation I think what works for one doesn't work for another. I could drink litres of orange juice and it wouldn't help in the slightest, likewise glycerine suppositories do nothing for me. I once ended up in hospital begging for an enema, something I couldn't have imagined doing but I was in such distress.

In my 60s I finally found what worked for me, might not work for anyone else but I take bromelain, you can get it from health food shops. It is the enzyme from the pineapple and after a lifetime of worrying and counting days and working out when to take the laxatives, which always caused me agony, I now take one bromelain a day and I am a normal person bowel wise.

I hope you find what works for your daughter once this episode is over, hopefully it won't happen again.

mynameisigglepiggle · 26/02/2020 12:54

Just a thought OP but oramorph can cause constipation as well x

Herpesfreesince03 · 26/02/2020 13:49

How is she op? X

Feelingsolost1 · 26/02/2020 14:27

Thanks for all your concern for DD.
She's OK, has bit more of an appetite, has had some toast and grapes.
I managed to hide her movicol in milkshake and she drunk it all up, without a word. She has no idea, so thankfully it looks like I'll be able to give her that without issue - as I have been giving it with diluted juice and she's been throwing it back up.
No bowel movement yet. Waiting on our gp to call back. She's just relaxing in bed watching some cartoons and getting some rest. X

Glad she seems a tiny bit better .

JayAlfredPrufrock · 26/02/2020 15:35

You can’t buy it in this country but Black Forest Tea from South Africa is a stupendous laxative. You might be able to get it online.

Dreamscomingtrue · 26/02/2020 15:50

When I was a child a had a couple of similar episodes that Eventually passed. I was diagnosed both times with a twisted intestine. Luckily with some bed rest the pain went away, but i remember that it was very intense at the time.

Feelingsolost1 · 26/02/2020 16:33

I'm absolutely furious to be honest, my doctor called back and said she will absolutely not give me anything stronger for DD. She said the discharge letter should have a follow up plan. I had a look at the discharge letter and it was full of lies, I feel so sad that they have clearly saw my daughter as a nucience. They said she was in no pain through the night or day whilst admitted, said she eat and drank well, never mentioned about her needing oramorph, they said she moved around fine, also said she moved her bowels.. So I've gone and written a letter to clarify all the lies. X

I'm furious on your behalf!! I hope you get something sorted, how awful for you both.

GaaaaarlicBread · 26/02/2020 17:40

Hi OP. A few years ago , when I was 20, I had this. I couldn’t believe it when they scanned me and said it was basically constipation as I had been passing stools , so I was confused as to how it could be. Turned out it was impacted . I felt like I was dying . They ended up having me on 9 Movicol sachets a day and nothing worked . I had to have an enema and I’ve never seen so much poo in my whole life (and I do nursing in the NHS!) I was off work for about two weeks I was so poorly , then rumours around were were ‘itsemily is full of poo’ whenever I had something to say. It really was awful nobody understands unless they’ve had it. You’ve had amazing advise on here so I have nothing more to advise other than please tell your DD it will get better! Keep pushing for help if you’re struggling or if she gets worse x

Feelingsolost1 · 26/02/2020 17:50

We have passed stool!!! Looks like my 3 hidden movicol sachets over 3 hours has worked its magic.
The poo was quite a lot, but it was soft looking formed poo. She's still complaining of a sore stomach though. I'll give it till tomorrow to see, for those who have dealt with this before, is it normal to still have a painful abdomen even after passing the stool?
I am so thankful for all the support here, thanks so much x

OP posts:
FizzyIce · 26/02/2020 17:57

That’s outrageous, definitely give them what for !
There may be more in there which is why it’s still sore but I’m going from personal experience.
So glad things are on the ‘move’

GaaaaarlicBread · 26/02/2020 18:04

Hi OP, my tummy hurt about a week after passing the stool. Just because of all the stretching , and general bloating

milkjetmum · 26/02/2020 18:07

There is probably more to come, keep going with the movicol until you are certain she is going every day and free of pain. Unfortunately sometimes soft poo can squeeze around the blockage so you need to keep going for a while yet.

flapjackfairy · 26/02/2020 18:12

Haven't had time to RTFT but paediatric movicol is half strength . So 2 sachets equal to 1 adult sachet. Otherwise it is the same. And it does take a few days to work with my kids . I always think it isn't going to do the trick but all of a sudden it will shift it all so hang in there X

Feelingsolost1 · 26/02/2020 18:16

Thanks everyone! You guys really have given me that inner confidence to fight on my daughters behalf. I'll give her another movicol disguised as strawberry milkshake! Yes I think there must be more, her stomach does still feel bloated and looks distended. She didn't manage much of her favourite dinner either sadly but a day at a time I guess! Xx

Ibuprofen can cause stomach problems. Gaviscon can help, maybe speak to a pharmacist for advice?
