Hi, im looking for some help, my daughter is 7, and has been in a lot of pain in her lower left side of her abdomen. It came on out the blue last Sunday night and has got worse. We have visited the hospital twice and the doctor twice. They have taken bloods but couldn't see an issue. Her tummy hurts when being pressed, urine seems clear. No heavy lifting, not muscle pull or anything. I'm honestly at a loss, pain medication doesn't do much, doctor is going to check which bloods were taken and call me after lunchtime. She's passing poo and wind. This pain leaves her crying, doubled over. Any ideas?? Thanks

My 3 year old had to take 8 a day for 5 days to clear her blockage. Your DD will need more than 3 sachets to even begin to move things.

LilQueenie · 25/02/2020 19:43

can I just say thanks for posting the link. It has calmed me quite a bit and helped me understand what the doctors failed to tell me.OP best of luck with your dd.

AliciaMayEmory · 25/02/2020 20:05

Just thought I would as that I was told not to go mad with the orange juice as it just makes the stuff above the blockage runnier and can cause more discomfort and/or overspill. Hope your DD gets some relief soon.

Chilver · 25/02/2020 20:30

Although this was as an adult, movicol , glycerin suppositories or lactulase didn't work for me at all, the only thing that did was laxido which works by drawing water intestine whereas other like movicol and lactose bulk it out I think. Anyways, the hospital would only give me 2 sachets a day but wouldn't discharge me until I'd had a bowel movement so I had my DH bring my laxido from home and took the minimum 4 I needed to get things moving!! I now take liquid sodium picosulphate (1tsp) when needed which works a treat. 1 x Sodium picosulphate sachet is what hospitals give you to completely clear you out before an abdo surgery.....

So, basically the hospitals are generally really cautious with their dosages and movicol at that dose mught not work for your DD. And if movicol doesn't work, ask whether laxido or sodium picosulphate is an option for children (i'm not a doctor so definitely ask a doctor before taking anything I've mentioned!!) Good luck

Boopeedoop · 25/02/2020 20:32

When my daughter had this she was given movicol to soften and sodium picosulphate to make the bowel contract. She was also given pain relief.

We were told to keep going with those doses until the stool was very soft and then switch to a maintenance dose.

I’m very glad you have an answer even if she still in pain.
I remember when I fractured my spine and I was on my back for 2 weeks which meant I didn’t go to the toilet so it just sat there .
When I was finally able to go home the pain in my abdomen was terrible , I cried all the way home and spent most of the night trying to go to the loo.
Sitting up definitely makes the pain worse but gravity will also help.
Hopes she’s better soon,poor girl

Feelingsolost1 · 25/02/2020 20:59

Here I go again - so I've gone to massage DD tummy and I've come across a bulging lump, to the left of her belly button, she's complaining of dizziness and feeling sick, as well as general pain and tenderness. Any ideas??? God I feel absolutely useless x

Did they give you open access to the ward? Can you call the ward for some advice?

Feelingsolost1 · 25/02/2020 21:04

No open access, I could call 111 again and get some advice I guess? I feel absolutely awful, poor girls eyes are totally sunken she's so tired x

Honestly, they haven't made this easy for you have they? I'd try calling switchboard at the hospital first and seeing if you can speak to the nurse in charge, they might be able to help. Otherwise I think 111 is your best bet. Is she able to get any sleep at all?

You must all be exhausted.

Embracelife · 25/02/2020 21:17

That will be the impaction. She needs stronger stuff to move the blockage. Call the ward.

FizzyIce · 25/02/2020 21:17

Hernia ? But I’m not sure if that would’ve been picked up on a scan ?

thehorseandhisboy · 25/02/2020 21:17

Agree with suggestion of trying to speak to one of the ward nurses as they will have the up to date info about your dd.

The lump could be the impacted faeces - did they tell you which side of her intestines the blockage is?

Has she had ibruorfen before? It's pretty harsh on the stomach at the best of time for lots of people (sorry).

Hope that this gets sorted out for you soon.

FizzyIce · 25/02/2020 21:18

But then it could be the blockage .. blimey , they haven’t made it easy for you

Utini · 25/02/2020 21:26

@Chilver movicol and laxido are just different brands of the same medication.

Newjez · 25/02/2020 21:34

It took us about a year to get my son's blocked kidney diagnosed, and about the same time to get his partially blocked intestine diagnosed.

The NHS is great when they find out what is wrong with you, but it can take them a while.

Good luck and keep trying.

Sweetooth92 · 25/02/2020 21:57

She’s having such a rough time, I feel for you both.

I’d go back to a&e, and refuse to leave until she’s sorted. They can’t keep leaving her to suffer, it’s cruel. Hopefully they’ll send you straight back to the ward to be treated properly x

mummymayhem18 · 25/02/2020 22:15

God Op.Have only just found your post and read through it. I'm so sorry you are both having to go through this. It sounds absolutely awful and very scary for you both. I hope they get to the bottom of this soon and she's soon on the mend. X

JayAlfredPrufrock · 25/02/2020 22:50

Your poor DD. I just don’t understand how the medical folk can leave a child in so much pain.

Namechange8471 · 25/02/2020 22:55

Hope she gets better soon op, look after yourself if you can , you must be exhausted!

Feetupteashot · 25/02/2020 22:56

maa1992 · 25/02/2020 23:06

Hope you're okay op, I'd go back to A&E x

Wynston · 25/02/2020 23:07

How is she now op???

Wasywasydoodah · 25/02/2020 23:21

Definitely call the hospital ward where you were. If that doesn’t work then out of hours gp could prescribe a suppository? 3 sachets of movicol isn’t enough for an impaction.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 25/02/2020 23:23

How awful for your DD, and you OP. Our DS suffered terribly with constipation when he was little. Our GP prescribed Movicol but like you we were told 2-3 sachets a day. It was only when he ended up in hospital that we were told he needed 10-12 sachets a day to clear the impaction and then reduce it gradually to 2 sachets a day (which was on for over a year!!) We were told to mix a couple of sachets at a time in a small drink of squash. It worked really well within a day or so. I really hope it's the same for your little girl 🤞🏻
