Hi, im looking for some help, my daughter is 7, and has been in a lot of pain in her lower left side of her abdomen. It came on out the blue last Sunday night and has got worse. We have visited the hospital twice and the doctor twice. They have taken bloods but couldn't see an issue. Her tummy hurts when being pressed, urine seems clear. No heavy lifting, not muscle pull or anything. I'm honestly at a loss, pain medication doesn't do much, doctor is going to check which bloods were taken and call me after lunchtime. She's passing poo and wind. This pain leaves her crying, doubled over. Any ideas?? Thanks

There's no radiation with ultrasound.

I know things have moved on but while she is in hospital can you get her tested for lactose intolerance?

7 is a prime age for symptoms to start to show.

Feelingsolost1 · 25/02/2020 10:24

Updating, she's still in a lot of pain. I've had to search high and low for someone to care for my younger child so my husband can come in with supplies and food - no under 5s are allowed on the ward. We're quite a long way from home. I'm trying to get her to go for a sleep but she just keeps tossing and turning. Thanks everyone for your support along the way. X

DD had the same issue back in november. The stomach pain never really went but then her bowel movements slowed. Like your dd there are some times when she is doubled up in pain on the right side although she has had the pain in other areas. She gets lots of gas and then diarrhoea before constipation. She is on lactulose I believe it is. Doctor says they can't feel any blockages and thinks its constipation. I would like further tests too as they can't feel a blockage but I do feel thats not enough as I was told the same but actually had one. They refuse tests.

I am so sorry your little girl is in so much pain, you are doing great. I hope you get to the bottom of this soon.

Babynut1 · 25/02/2020 10:44

When I had appendicitis, the pain with me would gone for a few days at a time for a few months. The pain was always on the left. The day I got admitted, it was agony and by the time the evening came the pain had started moving to the right.

Babynut1 · 25/02/2020 10:45

Just to add, my appendicitis was mistaken for constipation and I was told to take laxatives. It was only when they did blood tests at the hospital that they finally diagnosed appendicitis and removed it.

Could it be the onset of puberty. My mum started her periods at 9. DD's friend started at 8.

ChinUpChestOut · 25/02/2020 10:46

Just been reading through the whole thread. Have no advice to add, but so sorry your DD is in so much pain.

You're doing an amazing job fighting for her to get a diagnosis. Glad that MNers are helping with suggestions - love this side of MN.

Hope to hear a positive update soon. Flowers

No under 5's on the ward is a bizarre policy! I've never hear of a children's ward with that. I'm a paediatric nurse. Get the nurses on side and they will speak up for you to the consultant. The doctors May say you can go but if the nurses are not happy they don't have to discharge you.

BrokenMumTeenDD · 25/02/2020 10:57

Mesenteric Adenitis can be very painful & mimic appendicitis. We've had DD prepped for emergency appendectomy, only to have the top doctor re examine her & stop surgery. It's a scary one until you know what you are dealing with & it is painful, so hard to watch our DCs suffer so much.

Tip given to me by a great A&E doctor - it's not appendicitis if it hurts when you press on the tummy. Appendicitis hurts when you stop pressing & let go. You can find videos of how to do this test online. Knowing this is a godsend when dealing with MA

MA responds best to anti inflammatories as it's swollen glands hitting nerves. Anything that reduces that swelling will help. So nurofen & turmeric/Curcumin help along with heat to soothe.

Since when does an ultrasound deliver radiation!? Am I missing something? Have we all been causing radiation damage to our unborn babies for the last 30 years? WTAF?

OP, I've been following. Keep on at them. If nothing else, a young child in this much pain needs support and help. She can't be expected just to suck it up.

Incidentally, I can't remember any symptoms but I had something called, I think, "a grumbling appendix". There were no extreme immediate urgent needs for surgery but when they did eventually take it out apparently it wasn't looking so good. This was, admittedly, 35 years ago. It nearly was missed because the symptoms were so completely different to by DBro who had had the classic sudden onset of illness, collapse, extreme pain etc and an appendix that when they took it out a few hours later was on the verge of bursting.

Just seen your update.

Another possibility, especially if the pain comes in spasms something like Labour pains & stops when she sleeps is some form of colitis & a blockage of impacted stool hitting it to try & pass.

My DD had this & the hospital were absolutely bloody awful & blamed it on IBS & low tolerance to painHmm
I had to have a row with the doctor who was refusing to pass her onto the gastro team for a scan.

Treatment was high dose movicol & IV paracetamol for tge pain - not that they remembered to ever give her the second bit Hmm

She's still traumatised by then sending a psychiatrist to her bed instead of diagnosing & treating herSad

Skierrdery · 25/02/2020 11:08

Are you in Canada?

TheVanguardSix · 25/02/2020 11:11

They've done a C-reactive protein blood test and the McBurney's sign, I assume- I hope??

Feelingsolost1 · 25/02/2020 11:13

Thanks everyone. No we're in the UK.
I've spoke to a nurse to ask the doctor if she can be written up for something stronger.
My husband is on his way so he will help support me to fight it.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm looking into them all.
I have the worst headache ever!
Thanks for the handhold, it's so appreciated. X

Ive got crohn's disease and the pain came in waves, was worse when I'd eaten. Hot water bottle and lying on my side eased it somewhat but I was fobbed off for years. It took severely raised blood markers and a colonoscopy to diagnose it. I hope its something that can be treated more easily Flowers

BrokenMumTeenDD · 25/02/2020 11:28

I should have added. My DD turned out to have Allergic Colitis caused by what turned out to be an undiagnosed Soy allergy. So I'd recommend asking for an Immunoglobulin E test which is an allergy marker. Good luck. It's no fun, make sure you take time to look after you too

Bogoffrain · 25/02/2020 11:33

If you are not in the uk why did you call 111? Is that available in other countries or am I being thick.

Bogoffrain · 25/02/2020 11:34

Scratch that stupid comment I misread...., op I hope you get to the bottom of it poor girl x

Bringringbring12 · 25/02/2020 11:35

I would put money on coeliac

Feelingsolost1 · 25/02/2020 13:11

OK I've managed to push for a scan. Just waiting now, been prescribed oramorph for when pain gets real bad too which is good. X

Sounds like they're taking you seriously.

Skierrdery · 25/02/2020 13:16

What was the nurse thinking when she was talking about a scan and radiation? Was she talking about a CT scan or something? I swear some of them try to fob you off.
