Hi, im looking for some help, my daughter is 7, and has been in a lot of pain in her lower left side of her abdomen. It came on out the blue last Sunday night and has got worse. We have visited the hospital twice and the doctor twice. They have taken bloods but couldn't see an issue. Her tummy hurts when being pressed, urine seems clear. No heavy lifting, not muscle pull or anything. I'm honestly at a loss, pain medication doesn't do much, doctor is going to check which bloods were taken and call me after lunchtime. She's passing poo and wind. This pain leaves her crying, doubled over. Any ideas?? Thanks

Mesenteric Adenitis.

partofthepeanutgallery · 24/02/2020 21:29

My 10 year old DD had her appendix out a couple of months ago; emergency surgery. They present differently in children ... pain was below her belly button and never shifted. her blood work did show a raging infection existed, though... still worth a re-look I think.

Rosspoldarkssaddle · 24/02/2020 21:30

If paracetamol and ibuprofen is not touching it then at the very least she should have help with her pain. Iv paracetamol is very good. She really needs to be in hospital if only for pain relief. At least they can then carry out investigations for appendicitis, migraine and impaction.

Bobbiepin · 24/02/2020 21:37

Wouldn't appendicitis show a raised white cell count on the bloods though?

ShawshanksRedemption · 24/02/2020 21:40

Go back to A&E as things have changed for the worse - distended tummy and chalky white. She is still in pain and that needs to be managed.

No-one on here can tell you what it is.

DonKeyshot · 24/02/2020 21:43

Appendicitis doesn't usually result in a raised temperature and, in common with Frog's dh, I didn't have any vomiting or diarrhoea, mumwon.

As I had contracted tonsillitis my blood work may have shown signs of an infection but, without that particular ailment, my bloods may not have shown any sign of anything untoward until the pesky little thing burst, at which time infection would have been rampant and my life would have been in danger.

yellowallpaper · 24/02/2020 21:57

Abdominal amenities? Has she had a recent viral infection?

yellowallpaper · 24/02/2020 21:58

Adenitis. Bloody autocorrect

ineedaholidaynow · 24/02/2020 22:02

I was admitted to hospital when I was 16 with suspected appendicitis. In those days I had low blood pressure, slow pulse rate and my body temperature was always on the low side of normal. When stressed blood pressure gets lower. Was very stressed by the time I got to hospital.

When the nurse took my temperature, blood pressure etc she said 'by all accounts you should be dead' as everything was so low Shock

I was down in the operating theatre a couple of hours later and was told the next day that my appendix was close to rupturing.

When I previously had appendix pain the GP dismissed it as constipation

Darbs76 · 24/02/2020 22:05

I had my appendix rupture and had no right side pain unless pressed. All central. Some of my bloods were up though (probably inflammation). Take her to A&E next time it flares and don’t leave without answers

Feelingsolost1 · 24/02/2020 22:31

Thanks everyone. She's passing poo, so don't think it could be constipation.
No viral infection recently, no.
Checked in regards to the new medication possibly causing the distended tummy but doctor doesn't seem to think they are linked.
Thanks for sharing all your stories, glad everything worked out OK!
At the closest sick kids just now, Hopefully we can get to the bottom of it. X

Hope they can find out what is wrong OP and that your DD feels better soon.

Cherrysherbet · 24/02/2020 22:37

Op, my sons appendix pain started as a tummy ache, then moved to the right later on. I missed it, and so did the school for a whole day. He had it removed as a emergency that night.

gingajewel · 24/02/2020 22:41

It does sound like it could be appendicitis op, hope your seen quickly.

Pumpkinandpeas · 24/02/2020 22:44

Hope she's ok x

Noneyerbuisness11234 · 24/02/2020 23:06

I had my appendix removed and I had no pain on my right side just my left they ruptured as they were being removed hope u get to the problem op but I would b straight bk to a&e

DonKeyshot · 25/02/2020 00:15

So glad you're in a paediatric A&E, OP, and I hope that this time round they'll get to the bottom of what's causing your dd's pain and distended tummy.

DonKeyshot · 25/02/2020 00:23

As can be seen from this thread, appendicitis can present in so many different ways that it should be ruled out first when the patient is complaining of a painful tummy.

A simple scan will hopefully reveal whether there's a problem with that organ. If it's not the cause as least the OP wlll no longer have to worry about a possible rupture and the accompanying issues.

HopefullyAnonymous · 25/02/2020 00:30

Any chance it could be threadworms? It’s unusual, but a heavy worm infestation can cause these symptoms. Is it any worse after she eats?

StudentHelp · 25/02/2020 00:51

Hope she feels better soon

Feelingsolost1 · 25/02/2020 02:20

Update, writing this from a little bed beside DD big hospital bed, we're being kept in tonight for observation.
Her urine is showing markers now, they are still unsure whether it could be appendicitis, the surgical team saw us this evening, and is coming back in the morning, as well as the doctor and they are going to put together a plan. She's had her bloods taken again too, not sure on the result yet.
Thanks for all the concern and support. X

You and your darling dd are in the best place and I hope you can get some sleep in your little bed, OP.

Hopefully the morning will bring comforting news and she'll soon be bouncing around again. You, of course, will never be the same and the worry will have caused you more than a few gray hairs. Smile

Mojitomogul · 25/02/2020 07:58

Have they looked for intussuception? Its where the bowel sort of telescopes in on itself but it doesnt stop poo coming completely- but can cause a swollen stomach. My brother had it and it took them almost 24 hours to diagnose as they were testing him for meningitis and all sorts. Maybe ask them about that if the blood results arent showing too much. I think it would explain the pain and her turning white, and the swollen stomach. It needs an ultrasound to have a look.

theswordthatdangles · 25/02/2020 08:10

Im glad you are in the right place and hopefully dd is getting sorted. Neighbour's girl had issues for a couple of weeks before appendicitis was finally diagnosed - and yes, she had been checked a few times. It got the the point her appendix ruptured. She was in hospital for a week afterwards.

I think appendixes are such tricky things. Doctors don't want to submit anyone to surgery unnecessarily, but symptoms coincide with so many other issues they want to rule them out first.

crowsfeet57 · 25/02/2020 08:16

My ds had very similar symptoms and it turned out to be a liver abscess. an ultrasound would show if it is,
