What 'adult' thing have you never done?

I have reached the grand old age of 53 and have never booked a holiday abroad. I wouldn't even know where to start! and I fancy a holiday but don't know how to do it Holidays have always been in the UK, camping when the DC were young and caravanning for the last 12 years. My last foreign trip was when I was 19 and DM booked it. I just had to give her the money for it.

Never:
Been married
Drank tea or coffee- tried both and they’re gross
Hosted a dinner party
Had a mortgage
Booked a proper holiday myself- ex always did it and now I can’t afford to

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 23/02/2020 21:43

How have people functioned without a credit card? How do you shop? Surely not everything is bought on debit card?

Yes I pay for everything with my debit card. I've used Visa chargeback in the past when things have gone wrong and its been fine. Everytime credit cards come up I conversation its clear most people arent paying g the full balance each month and I dont trust that I would either.

Gwenhwyfar · 23/02/2020 21:44

I don't drive or own a house or have a garden so LOADS of these things are strange to me. Can't do DIY, don't generally mow a lawn (did it as a teenager), etc.
It's strange, I find some of these things perfectly normal e.g. never having hosted a dinner party, but some very strange e.g. being able to book a holiday in this country but not abroad or never having taken the bins out.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 23/02/2020 21:45

I started reading through thinking “oh I’ve done all those” but then...

I’ve never been to a music festival
I’ve never sold a house (because I’ve lived in the first one we bought for nearly 30 years)
I’ve never taken recreational drugs
I’ve never had an affair or a one night stand (only ever sleep with DH)
I’ve never had a loan (other than the mortgage and that’s long paid off)

I expect I WILL sell a house at some point but not planning on doing any of those others!

I think I’ve done all the things that I really consider to be “adulting”. Building flat packs, wallpapering, car maintenance, minor plumbing and electrics, I’ve taught my DCs key “adulting” too..

Gwenhwyfar · 23/02/2020 21:45

"Yes I pay for everything with my debit card."

Me too. I don't even consider a credit card to be a necessary part of adulthood.

Gwenhwyfar · 23/02/2020 21:48

"Changed a light bulb"

It's really easy. Try it.
I can't do DIY which includes putting furniture together, but I believe they really are difficult things.
I can bleed a radiator, but only the type that don't need extra water poured into the boiler.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 23/02/2020 21:48

I've never had a credit card either, aside from a business one, and wouldn't want one. I like knowing that what's in my account is mine, with nothing owing.

womaninatightspot · 23/02/2020 21:50

Christ this makes me feel like an adult as done most of the above :)

Never changed a tire (Surely this is why I pay my RAC membership fee which is adult in itself!)
Put up wallpaper although I've stripped it and painted
Sold a house ( bought one though)

To the PP who'd never managed to open champagne/ prosecco the trick is to twist the bottle not the cork

Notso · 23/02/2020 21:50

Got my driving license,
Lived on my own,
Had a credit card,
Worked full time. The most I've worked is 30 hours term time only.

Notso · 23/02/2020 21:52

Along with driving I've never done anything car related. My Daughter left the windows of her car open the other day and it started raining. I was clueless as to how to shut them.

lostinleaves · 23/02/2020 21:54

I've never had a credit card either, nor a mortgage or a hire purchase agreement.

SwansGlide · 23/02/2020 21:55

Re Car washes - go inside to till, select a programme listed on the wall (different prices), pay, you get a ticket with a code on, drive car to code machine at front of carwash, enter code, it tells you to drive inside.

Inside the car wash there's a green light at the far end which turns to red when you have driven in far enough. Stop the car then. Turn off engine. Sit back and machine does all the washing. Smile

At end of wash, light turns green to show you can drive out.

SwansGlide · 23/02/2020 21:58

woman I've never changed a tyre, mainly because either the garage has put the nuts on on so tight I wouldn't get them off, or because I worry I wouldn't be able to put the nuts back on tight enough.

I guess if living out in the country then it's probably a necessity to know how to do it. City/suburbs, not such a problem.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 23/02/2020 21:59

I've never changed a tire
I have never plugged a washing machine or install my own cooker
I am really crap at DIY

I would love to see a list of adult things to see which ones I have couldn't tick.

Thewomeninthemirror · 23/02/2020 21:59

I have never sky dived!
I love by the mantra of try everything 5 times, then if I still don’t like it I know I definitely have tried it.

Pringlesonthetable · 23/02/2020 21:59

Sluggishsnail

Hmm...so many places so little money! Europe - Austria, Switzerland, Norway , southern Germany,

Further afield and unlikely due to lack of funds Canada, Antigua, Galapagos, Maldives
I have expensive tastes and not the income to back it up..[ grin]

Georgiah · 23/02/2020 22:01

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 23/02/2020 22:03

I don't even consider a credit card to be a necessary part of adulthood.

I would not buy anything online with a debit card! It's too unsafe.

firstimemamma · 23/02/2020 22:04

Never driven on a dual carriageway or motorway on my own.
Got married (but am engaged)
Waxed my legs
Got a manicure
Done anything to my eye brows

morrisseysquif · 23/02/2020 22:05

Never learnt to drive or used a drill. I do feel that knowing to do both would be great for my future.

Sundancer77 · 23/02/2020 22:06

The very worst was when I had to ask the lady behind the till at the petrol station, how to pump up my tyre 😬I was pregnant and gave that excuse..but that’s not really an acceptable excuse!

Also haven’t:

Done any diy
Used a lawnmower
Held a proper dinner party
Opened a savings account
Paid into a pension
Used a drive through car wash

justasking111 · 23/02/2020 22:07

Never eaten a kebab. (never will)
