What 'adult' thing have you never done?

I have reached the grand old age of 53 and have never booked a holiday abroad. I wouldn't even know where to start! and I fancy a holiday but don't know how to do it Holidays have always been in the UK, camping when the DC were young and caravanning for the last 12 years. My last foreign trip was when I was 19 and DM booked it. I just had to give her the money for it.

Put up shelves, wallpapered a wall, used a drill.

BearimyJeremy · 24/02/2020 14:49

I've never bought or worn coloured lipstick. I've crooked teeth and thin lips and its absolutely obvious to me, and has been since teenage years that drawing any kind of attention wouldn't be a good look...

Actually I did wear tinted gloss on my wedding day but someone else put it on and it wasn't mine!

Wannabegreenfingers · 24/02/2020 14:54

I'm rather Shock at most of these. Adulting is pretty rubbish, but a lot of these are just skills that you need to know/have/use in real life.....

tiggerkid · 24/02/2020 15:07

Kept a plant alive longer than a fortnight

This reminds me of my sister :D

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 24/02/2020 15:13

Never:

  • got married
  • had kids
  • owned an iron
-mowed the lawn
thecatsthecats · 24/02/2020 15:13

I never completed learning to ride a bike as a kid.

Of all the adults close to me who I see regularly - let's say the nearest 30 - three of them use bikes frequently. Maybe another five own bikes, but barely use them if ever.

So 2/3 don't cycle at all except as an extremely rare leisure activity as adults. But it's still considered weird that I don't possess this skill I'd never use by the law of averages...

I've not successfully had my ears pierced either, but planning to remedy that in the summer.

Lweji · 24/02/2020 15:13

Slept without my husband

Did you start before you were 18?

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 24/02/2020 15:27

Held a proper dinner party.
Been camping.
Had a bikini wax.
Worked fully full time.

toffee1000 · 24/02/2020 15:31

These kinds of threads are always interesting. Loads of things I wouldn’t count as “adult” eg having a general anaesthetic (my DM had one when she was 10 for appendix removal for example).
Of course there are always a few judgmental posts too Hmm

There are loads of “adult” things I haven’t done, eg never had a full-time job, although I am looking.
Some of the things mentioned on this thread that I have done: changed a lightbulb, lived abroad (part of university degree), made a Christmas cake.
Some things I haven’t done I likely will in the future, I’m still fairly young so I’ve got plenty of time!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 24/02/2020 15:54

I have been thinking about this again, and there are things I have done that some on this list haven't- I've mowed the lawn (when DH had taken too long to get round to it), changed a fuse, wallpapered a room, removed wallpaper, used a drill. I am no Handy Andy though!

AlexaAmbidextra · 24/02/2020 16:11

These people who have never paid a bill, cleaned a toilet, been on a train or done any of the common or mundane things that make up real life. Seriously, I’m curious. I’m assuming you have somebody, for instance a DH/DP who does this in your household or who drives you places? What on earth will you do if your facilitator drops dead tomorrow?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 24/02/2020 16:18

Learnt to drive.
Changed a plug.

belay · 24/02/2020 16:26

had a driving licence
been for beauty treatments or manicures been to University

Deckthehallswithlotsofcake · 24/02/2020 17:27

how can you not own a toilet brush? What do you do when there are ...uhm ...freckles all over the inside of the toilet?

Bozlem80 · 24/02/2020 17:31

I’ve never learnt to drive, in fact I’ve never even started a car up.
I’ve never held a dinner party
Never been to a concert
Never been on a girlie holiday
Never had a night away with my DH
Never been less that a size 14 throughout my adult life!
Never met a celebrity
Never been to a spa
Never had my nails done

JulesJules · 24/02/2020 17:36

I've never learnt to drive. I have bought a car though - H drives it - I just can't imagine myself ever being able to drive. Maybe I should try an automatic car.
Never had a pedicure, only had my nails done to get married. Never worn false nails or false eyelashes. Never had any waxing.

Happyd · 24/02/2020 17:42

Never bought a house
Never got married

I’ve just turned 50,

Leontine · 24/02/2020 17:50

@Deckthehallswithlotsofcake you just put your hand down there and wipe them off. Grin Seriously though, I just use tissue and bleach. Toilet brushes seem less hygienic to me.

As for adult stuff I’ve not done - any of the major life milestones like getting married, buying a house , having children.

Apart from that I’ve never been on holiday as an adult, not even a weekend away, so I’ve never had to book a hotel or anything like that.

IronShame · 24/02/2020 18:02

If you're counting not owning or doing ironing in this then no, DH doesn't do it either. We just don't do it Grin he did own an iron and a board when we met. But that's long gone, neither of us ever used it and so it was just taking up space.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 24/02/2020 18:07

Never made a Yorkshire pudding...Aunt Bessie all the way!

FeegleFion · 24/02/2020 18:13

I’ve never been married. That makes me sad.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/02/2020 18:23

"Apart from that I’ve never been on holiday as an adult, not even a weekend away, so I’ve never had to book a hotel or anything like that"

That's so sad! Is it down to lack of funds or something else?

Gwenhwyfar · 24/02/2020 18:27

Lipper - you hosted a dinner party before you were 18?

Lipperfromchipper · 24/02/2020 18:31

@Gwenhwyfar yes essentially...I think I was 16 or 17 I had a group of 6 or 7 friends over and I made dinner and dessert for them...we had music etc etc

Suebreo · 24/02/2020 18:33

I have never eaten a custard tart or a vanilla slice, cold custard makes me shudder. Never eaten tomato ketchup 🤮 never will. Haven’t eaten tripe but don’t suppose that’s unusual 😬
