What 'adult' thing have you never done?

I have reached the grand old age of 53 and have never booked a holiday abroad. I wouldn't even know where to start! and I fancy a holiday but don't know how to do it Holidays have always been in the UK, camping when the DC were young and caravanning for the last 12 years. My last foreign trip was when I was 19 and DM booked it. I just had to give her the money for it.

@stronger76

I haven't done those either I admit, but I've cooked a crab, does that count?

I don't fix cars though, the mechanic near work keeps car in tip top condition!

DameHannahRelf · 24/02/2020 09:45

Bought a house or gotten married. Not sure I'll ever want to do either.

DameHannahRelf · 24/02/2020 09:46

I can drive now, kind of, at least. Hoping to pass my test soon.

GigiBuffoon · 24/02/2020 09:51

Got married, had kids, done OLD, been to court (in any capacity), been arrested, had anything waxed, hosted Christmas, had savings, mastered how to wear a ‘crisp white shirt’ and not get egg down it.

But I can drive, have bought and sold houses, have emigrated, have run my own business, learned to make Hollandaise sauce, been to the theatre, on holiday abroad and dined on my own and can darn a sweater. So there’s that. Still don’t feel like a competent adult.

Blibbyblobby · 24/02/2020 09:56

Still don’t feel like a competent adult.

I don't think anyone does. And if they do, they are probably overestimating themselves :)

I remember seeing a standup on tv years ago talking about going to the supermarket as a newly independent adult and feeling like he was pretending to be grown up, and realising everyone else is just pretending too. I think there's a lot of truth in that.

I suspect having kids (which I don't) does make you a proper grown up, because you are totally responsible for another person.

otterhound · 24/02/2020 10:11

I’m 49
Never been to Nando's
Never been bed ridden by flu or similar
Never been to a festival /Rave
Never used an intetcity coach
Never been to Ireland- and I travel a lot!

QueenOfOversharing · 24/02/2020 10:26

2 people haven't cleaned a toilet. How is that even possible?

I haven't:
Been married
Owned property
Cooked or eaten crab or lobster (can't bear how they're cooked)
Lived with a partner who hasn't just moved into my flat 😒

I haven't scuba dived, but is that adulting?

Lipperfromchipper · 24/02/2020 10:47

No I think when I did it you had to be 10 or over. There was a family who did it with us and they had 12yr twins.

A LOT of Other things mentioned on here that are not exclusive to adults and that’s I had done before I was 18 were;
Clean a toilet
Been on a plane on my own
Been on a train
Changed a nappy
Learned to drive
Hung a picture
Ate lobster/crab
Had a dinner party
Had a job
Cooked a roast dinner
Took the bin out and all those kinds of household jobs...
Been kayaking
Sailed around uk, Ireland, Spain and Portugal

As a pp said it seems a lot of people on here have lived very quiet and sheltered lives Confused

QueenOfOversharing · 24/02/2020 10:54

@Lipperfromchipper I'm terrified of being underwater, but at that age I probably would have tried it.

Lipperfromchipper · 24/02/2020 10:56

@QueenOfOversharing it’s not for the faint hearted if I’m honest... I didn’t love it!! I felt very vulnerable for some reason and restricted with so much equipment!! I much prefer snorkeling and free diving myself.

Never bought a house, never been married, and I have no desire to do either.

I'm chronically ill, extremely unlikely to be able to work again, have a nice housing association flat, and have had bad enough experiences with relationships that I really could not be arsed with all that again! I have 2 really wonderful (in my very biased opinion) young adult DC, the world's stupidest cat and a few good friends, so I'm happy enough.

ItWillBeBetterInAugust · 24/02/2020 11:24

I don't understand the appeal of dinner parties. I had a boyfriend decades ago who liked that sort of thing and we hosted together and went to some and they made me cringe. Not something I've ever wanted to do since - the end of that relationship was a lucky escape.

I think I've done everything on the thread except cook live crustaceans in boiling water.

I'm endlessly amazed when adults in their 30s plus admit to not having been on a train alone... How has that never occurred?

IronShame · 24/02/2020 11:28

I also make tea wrong

Please don't tell me you put the milk in first or I'll have to report you to mnhq Grin

FrenchJunebug · 24/02/2020 11:35

get married.

willdoitinaminute · 24/02/2020 11:39

Never been divorced or had a tattoo. I have done pretty much everything else listed. However I still don’t feel like a proper adult🥴

MINICOOPERDRIVER · 24/02/2020 11:42

Never sat on a jury
Never had anal sex
Never had credit card
Never been to continental Europe on holiday - business trips only
Never bought carpets
Never been to IKEA
Never been on social media
Never farted in a lift
Never dialled 999

QueenOfOversharing · 24/02/2020 11:43

@Lipperfromchipper My worst nightmare would be having to dive underwater to then resurface somewhere else - to the point that I can't watch these scenarios on tv / films. It's linked to a PTSD thing, but I can't even bear to think about going underwater. I'm terrified of heights but I'd rather chuck myself off a cliff! 😂

cobwebfew · 24/02/2020 11:48

Haven't learnt to drive.
Don't own my own house

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 24/02/2020 11:49

Never been on social media Confused

This written on MN, I think it's safe to say that most of the "I've never ..." are to be taken with a massive pinch of salt Grin
