When I got home from work husband had pain in his lower right chest/upper abdomen and was struggling to breathe in properly. He kept telling me he was fine and he’d just got very cold on his cycle home from work (it’s about 45 mins-an hour in all weathers so not entirely inconceivable) and would be fine once he warmed up. I put it down to an intercostal muscle sprain or maybe a virus. Before bed I checked his temperature and it was 37.8 so again, I assumed viral infection. Kept telling me he was fine 🙄

We tried to get an early night at about 8.45 as we were both shattered. He’s been lying next to me with really laboured/irregular breathing, whimpering. He’s now got aching/pulsating hips/bum/legs. His temp is 38.3. He just asked me to check the colour of his legs ‘because they feel like they are rotting away’. I’m assuming he’s a bit feverish?! They look normal! I’ve given him some paracetamol but he’s point blank refusing to come out from under the duvet or take off his pjs. He was complaining that he hadn’t been able to poo today earlier (very unusual for him).

He’s an endurance athlete and used to a fresh kind of hell when it comes to suffering so I’m inclined to think whatever this is must be pretty awful to have floored him like this. I have no idea whether he’s about to drop down dead or if he’s being a bit dramatic.

NotYourHun

Well very pleased to hear that he's alive and your OK:)

You did right as one of these symptoms is a good indicator of this new barstard plauge Sepsis.

Its a very difficult thing to catch in its early stages and even medical staff arent all up to speed on it! or have it in mind i make no apoligies for getting all and sundry to read this link again;

sepsistrust.org/about/about-sepsis/

If anyones got a few bob spare ther is a donate button;)

That mentioned there is a bit of morbid fun to be had with the olde Flu which many dismiss as a bit of a cold. This is worth a google the "1918 spansih flu pandemic" and read how some 50 Million or more died worldwide and the Chinese werent involved in that one and neither it seems were the Spanish more to do with World War One wartime reporting restrictions;!

How to tell if someones got the Flu or just a cold!

  1. Sit the subject inside next to a window overlooking the garden.
  2. Proceeed outside with a 20 pound note in hand.
  3. Place the 20 pound note in view of the subjest under test.
  4. Retrun inside and tell the subject to go and get the 20 pound note.
  5. If subject gets the 20 pound note then they have a cold.
  6. If subject cannot get to the 20 pound noit he/she has the Flu
  7. If 6 is indicated go and get the 20 pound note back, they arent due to be composted as yet:)
DixieFlatline · 22/02/2020 13:43

Can people stop with the utter nonsense about flu versus cold. The clinical picture can be indistinguishable.

TiddlestheCat · 22/02/2020 14:47

@GreytExpectations

A bit of an ironic statement.

Aridane · 22/02/2020 14:52

@DixieFlatline

I so agree.

It irritates the fuck out of me to see the ignorant type of post in flu vs cold above

Especially given that the NHS itself reports that theee quarters of people with flu have no symptoms!! Shock

Which is good news on that generally people won’t feel like what @Justaboy describes bad in terms of limiting spread of flu given the lack of symptoms for many

Justaboy · 22/02/2020 15:12

Well.. I once had Flu and I can tell you that it was very bad the only comparision is that you have a runny nose ,rhinitis, headache and a cough. This sodding thing saw me almost unable to move out of bed for Two days.

Friend of mine built like the side of a house nothing ever seems to stop him or slow him down, he had one bought of the flu his words were " It was like doing 12 rounds with a heavyweight boxer"

OK then, so what was it that killed Millions in 1918 and to some extent 1919? Flu or a cold?.

Thinkingabout1t · 22/02/2020 15:59

Thanks for letting us know, OP. Hope you and he are getting plenty of hot drinks, doing whatever the doctor advised, and making a good recovery. I recommend giving yourself a bit more time than you think you should need (if possible) before returning to work, because flu is serious.

DixieFlatline · 22/02/2020 18:52

The only way to determine whether you actually have the flu is to do a test. If it says you have the virus, you have it. The severity (or absence) of your symptoms are irrelevant. You might have had flu multiple times without realising. Nobody is saying you can’t have horrible symptoms with the flu - but it most certainly IS the case that horrible symptoms can also be something that IS NOT the flu.

DixieFlatline · 22/02/2020 18:54

And Spanish flu was a particularly unfortunate strain that killed many for a specific reason, not simply because it was the flu. The strains of flu that go around these days do not become more dangerous by association.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 22/02/2020 19:02

Glad it's nothing life threatening OP, and hope you both feel better soon.

SquirrelFan · 30/04/2020 17:15

Does anyone think that this was possibly an early case of Covid - 19? @NotYourHun are you both feeling better now?

Namechangervaver · 30/04/2020 17:24

@SquirrelFan yes! Absolutely chilling reading it back.

OP doesn't sound like a very caring wife...man up indeed!
