I have tried many different perfumes - my current fragrances include Opium, Obsession, Bulgari Jasmine Noir (a favourite), Philosophy Magnolia & Amazing Grace, Liz Earle No. 9 & No. 20, Dior Coco but I still haven't found a special scent. i like musky/spicy/patouli/ types best - what are your favourites, can anyone recommend something a bit more unusual that might be lovely to have as a 'Signature Scent', that doesn't cost the earth?

Some JM last longer than others. They all last longer if applied on well moisturised skin.

Fozzleyplum · 19/02/2020 22:06

I like spicy/ warm scents. My favourites are Cinnabar, Opium and Clinique Aromatics Elixir. I also like Miller Harris La Fumee and L'air de Rien.

maddening · 19/02/2020 22:08

Dior Jadore in Joy - always get complimented on it.

Also Angel - and again always complemented and then when I say it is Angel people are surprised and the comment is always along the lines that it does not smell the same when they wear it and they usually don't like it.

CurlsandCurves · 19/02/2020 22:10

My signature scent was Cerruti1881 for years.

Then about 4 years ago I discovered Tom Ford Noir. So that’s 2 I swear by.

However I’m skint at the moment and absolutely loving Nexts Define. I used to love this years ago and it’s every bit as lovely as I remember. I’ll keep buying this as my every day.

cavabiensepasser · 19/02/2020 22:10

I see JM scents as 'aspirational', so to speak, because of the brand image. They smell alright, I guess, but they're weak, uncomplicated, unremarkable and boring.

Still, de gustibus non est disputandum, so let everyone wear whatever they enjoy.

IfNot · 19/02/2020 22:12

I used to love Coco but now it just smells so much of cloves-sweet cloves-and not much else. Is it me or did they change it?

HangingOffYourCloud · 19/02/2020 22:15

Mine's a sadly discontinued Ted Baker perfume. I'm always getting comments on how lovely it is. If I wear anything else I just smell wrong and not like me. I've got my last few bottles on ebay but they are getting few listings now. The last one I got was part of a gift box - there was a special offer voucher in it which expired in 2009 Grin

Sadly my favourite lipstick is also discontinued. In a year or so I'm not going to smell or look right anymore Sad

SalmonOfKnowledge · 19/02/2020 22:18

I would love to be able to afford Vert Boheme (Tom Ford) as a signature scent. It is absolutely divine. I don't remember ever loving a scent that much.

SalmonOfKnowledge · 19/02/2020 22:19

@cavabiensepasser I agree with you about Jo Malone

Nitpickpicnic · 19/02/2020 22:22

I have collected quite a few of guerlain Aqua allegoria scents. They have something in common with each other (a style) but then vere off into specific directions. Pamplelune is the stand out fave.

So I have both a signature, and variety depending on my mood. Plus the bottles are lovely. I just wish their scent lasted longer. I have a couple of travel-sized ones to top up with during the day, but inevitably not the one I put on that morning in my bag that day!

Mistletorpor · 19/02/2020 22:23

JM scents are intended to be layered or combined. And longevity comes with that.

Cherrysoup · 19/02/2020 22:38

My signature scent was Cerruti1881 for years.

I love this perfume!

When in hospital for weeks, I asked my dh to bring me two perfumes, one was Cacharel pour Homme and the other was the butterfly bottle from M&S. Unfortunately, my DH’s best mate uses Cacharel so I can’t use it because it reminds him of his mate and isn’t attractive, therefore. I smelled the other one going into an office the other day and the memories hit so hard I honestly nearly fell over!

Like a pp, I put a splash on before bed or just sniffed the bottle at bedtime, particularly when I was recovering from being in hospital. Funny how smells are inextricably linked to memories.

PurpleFlower1983 · 19/02/2020 22:41

J’Adore is my favourite. I think it’s timeless.

Crunchymum · 19/02/2020 22:45

Am a recent convert to Molecule 01.

Also love Chloe (Orginal parfum)

Mintychoc1 · 19/02/2020 22:52

White Musk from The Body Shop. It was cheap when I was a teenager back in the 80s, and the shop was near where we lived. I’ve worn it for over 35 years I reckon.

Hollybollybingbong · 19/02/2020 23:00

I'm lucky enough to work with creative perfumer Penny Williams, she's very generous at sharing her expertise and I get to smell all kinds of fragrances in various combinations.
When I was younger I loved Samsara for a bit of mystery and Sunflowers for romance.

Now my favourite day fragrance is Cècile by To The Fairest and evenings is Halfeti by Penhaligons, they're both complex fragrances and make me feel less invisible!
I agree with others that Fragrantica is a great site for exploring fragrances. I'm also very glad I applied for a Penhaligons sample and took their 'What Scent are you?' Quiz because I would never buy a bottle without knowing how it smelt and the perfume sample I was sent, Halfeti, suits me down to the ground.

catzrulz · 19/02/2020 23:05

@CuriousCapricorn there is no perfume I'd rather wear than Poeme. I get compliments daily wearing it.
I've worn it for more than 20 years and won't ever change.

MsPepperPotts · 19/02/2020 23:13

When I was in my 20s and 30's it was Opium and White Linen
In my 40's and 50's it was Clinique Aromatics Elixir
Now I am in my 60's it's La Vie Est Belle by Lancome

Lozz22 · 19/02/2020 23:13

I don't. All perfume smells shit on me. A Friend always used to wear DKNY when we went out and it smelt gorgeous so when she moved abroad I got a bottle so whenever I missed her I could I smelt the scent and I'd be reminded of her. It smelt rank on me!! But the seatbelt in my car had it on from when she'd worn it on a night out so for ages afterwards I'd sit in the car just so I could smell the scent. My DSis used mine as bog freshener instead. I've tried tons and tons tons of perfumes but nothing smells right

Tillygetsit · 19/02/2020 23:40

My db bought me Flowers by Kenzo years ago and every couple of years I get a huge bottle of it. It's the only perfume I wear.

FinallyHere · 19/02/2020 23:41

My first was Givenchy III.

It found me when I was say 16. Walking through a fancy perfumery with my mother and elder sister, a demonstrator was offering spray of a new perfume. My mother stepped forward but the demonstrator indicated oh so delicately that it was more suitable for me ( the young 'un)

I've loved it ever since but couldn't afford it for years and then, just when I could afford it, yes, they discontinued it. A reformulated version came back but it was nothing without amber and green moss (and other things)

I've since 'settled' for Roger et Gallet Bois d'Orange. It's lovely but ... you never forget your first.

Bunnyfuller · 19/02/2020 23:46

Poppies. By kenzo is my favourite - Not sure how it happened
Cool Water is my me feel good for me. When my first husband walked with no explanation I lost loads of weight on the (not recommended) fags and wine diet and I looked and felt amazing. Lots and lots of one track minded men making me feel gorgeous by just walking in the room.
M and S Florentyna for work, pretty and floral but not heady (although wearing cool water to work more, maybe related to getting sick of selfish husband (like the wine and fags diet, not good for you but feels good!)

Bunnyfuller · 19/02/2020 23:47

@Tillygetsit

Spooky! Posted together!

ghostyslovesheets · 19/02/2020 23:54

J’Adore and also Bronze Goddess in the summer - not sure I’d say they are ‘signature’ I don’t wear perfume often but I like those two

daisyjgrey · 19/02/2020 23:58

I've worn lots and liked them but have settled on one a really like but the clincher was I've had countless people comment on it or ask what I'm wearing. Presumably that's the one that works with my chemistry or whatever it is.
Karma from Lush.
