To have complained to Uber Eats

gallgal · 19/02/2020 16:56

Ordered a meal for me and the DCs, we've all got stinking colds and have been hunkered down all day.

The driver is assigned: it's a female name and they're on a bike

Ten minutes later (not concerned about this aspect, quick) my food arrives, delivered by a man in a car. No sign of this female anywhere.

I normally tip generously and give good feedback but this time I did neither and actually complained that the driver wasn't who they said they were. AIBU to have done this?

gallgall, I'm sure the delivery people are well vetted and they would hardly assault you as it is on record that they were delivering to you.

I've not used UberEats (not sure if they do it in my area, I'll check), but do order from Just Eat and Deliveroo sometimes. I've twice complained: received one meal which had gone cold (restaurant very near to me), and there was some toughness; weeks later I ordered same again, not because I'd forgotten but thought previous was probably a one off. It was not, same again therefore I did complain and won't use again.

WorraLiberty · 19/02/2020 18:05

If you live in an area of London where delivery drivers have been subject to acid attacks (www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-41887982) and where gang and knife crime are rife the security aspect of knowing who is bringing your food might appeal to you...

I live in exactly that sort of area of London and I still don't get why it would appeal? Confused

As long as the person hands me my food, warm and on time, why would I care what their name is or what they look like?

PumpkinP · 19/02/2020 18:05

Most times they deliver to me they are wearing a bike helmet so wouldn’t even be able to tell if they are the same person anyway!

Reallybadidea · 19/02/2020 18:05

No, still don't get it. Why does a different person bringing your food make an acid attack or stabbing more likely? You could still track your order, right? And presumably visually checked who was at the door before you opened it?

TryingToBeBold · 19/02/2020 18:07

Well I can't even get bloody UberEats... outside the current radius.
So you could just pick it up like some of us Grin

TatianaLarina · 19/02/2020 18:09

I get it would be a worry if you were a delivery driver, but you’re not you’re just complaining about them.

gallgal · 19/02/2020 18:10

You misunderstand @Purpleheadgirl - they arrived in a car but they have a delivery license for a bike, therefore they have NOT been vetted as vigorously

OP posts:
sneakythecat49 · 19/02/2020 18:10

I'd only be complaining if you could specify you wanted a female delivery person

gallgal · 19/02/2020 18:10

My questions exactly @chochito

HaveeeeYouMetTed · 19/02/2020 18:12

Have a bath, dose yourself up with a lemsip & have an early night. I think the cold has got to your head a little bit. Very bizzare thing to complain about.

MotherPupper · 19/02/2020 18:12

Why on earth does the person who delivers your nuggets need to be vetted, vigorously or otherwise!

My nephew works for McDonald's and I think he's got really shifty eyes!

goingoverground · 19/02/2020 18:12

@gallgal You are not being "OTT Precious"

Many years ago, a delivery driver tried to kiss me then pushed past me and followed my flatmate where he felt her up. He got caught because his employer knew who he was.

It doesn't matter who delivers your food if they work for Uber but if it is someone else using someone else's profile or used someone else's ID (the only check Uber do under employment law) to sign up, then it is an issue.

DuchessOfBeddington · 19/02/2020 18:13

The original assigned delivery person who 'bagsied' the slot may have been held up, diverted to a closer address or too far away to get you the food hot and on time.

nonsense, in that case Uber will change it on the system. How are they supposed to pay the correct driver if that was the case?

People are clearly job sharing to circumnavigate the administration or possibly cover sickness. I’m sure it’s mostly for honest reasons but still, Uber needs to get its house in order.

I posted above that this has happened to me before. At least twice but to be honest I only noticed cause I was expecting a female driver. How many subs for men with other men where there that I didn’t notice?

Again, I don’t care who delivers my food, and I do respect these guys are just trying to make a living. However, it seems positively Victorian for a company to allow this.

What if something went wrong and Uber has no clue who was driving? I can’t just bring in my husband to work with me if one of the staff is sick. It doesn’t work like this.

Oly4 · 19/02/2020 18:14

This is ridiculous! If you don’t want to take the risk of a man OR woman bringing your food, don’t order takeaway

TatianaLarina · 19/02/2020 18:15

Uber is a company run by a bunch of misogynist chancers with a very slapdash approach to women’s safety. Their main aim is to make money. Not sure what you were expecting from them but I suggest you try Deliveroo.

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 19/02/2020 18:15

I'm sure there was something about Uber eats delivery men/women on watchdog last series. Apparently one person signs up and then let's other people use their identity or something so it is an actual problem,

goingoverground · 19/02/2020 18:16

@Bluerussian There is no vetting for Uber Eats drivers other than the checks under employment law (passport/bank statements) and insurance checks if they use a motor vehicle. Uber taxi drivers need to have a mini cab licence, which requires checks by the licensing authority.

Busydrinkingcoffee1 · 19/02/2020 18:19

I also had this today OP both men but definitely not the same one and also said it was coming on a motorbike but was in a car. I wasn't at all concerned from a safety point just thought it was a bit cheeky as this man is probably working on the sly through his friends account! Didn't complain though...just happily ate my McDonald's Grin

GrumpyMug2 · 19/02/2020 18:22

Thing is before Deliveroo/Uber etc, we never knew who was delivering.

NotALurker2 · 19/02/2020 18:23

It definitely matters and you were right to complain. The drivers have to pass a background check. Would you want someone giving fake information to pass a background check when they're actually a criminal or a rapist doing the work? Or have someone pass the background check an then rent out their phone to a criminal so they can work a shift? Do you want to have someone dangerous show up at your door, who commits a crime and then you have absolutely no way to identify them because they were using someone else's account? You don't want people like that knocking on your door. Legitimate drivers have to pass background checks for a reason. You did the right thing.

justplopit · 19/02/2020 18:29

gallgall, I'm sure the delivery people are well vetted and they would hardly assault you as it is on record that they were delivering to you.

Isn't this the whole issue the op is referring too?

gallgal · 19/02/2020 18:30

Exactly that @justplopit

OP posts:
1066vegan · 19/02/2020 18:33

Last time I ordered a takeaway for delivery (We usually walk down and collect), there wasn't anyone available to drive so they got one of their customers to deliver it on their way home. I'm sure he wasn't vetted. 😁

Thefaceofboe · 19/02/2020 18:33

So so so many issues in the world and problems and you felt the need to post a thread because your food was handed to you by a man rather than a woman. Good lord

This ^

justplopit · 19/02/2020 18:34

Thing is before Deliveroo/Uber etc, we never knew who was delivering.

Well the restaurant did though didn't they, now it's not the responsibility of restaurant but Uber.

Like I said it doesn't bother me but I can see the ops point. Can't see how it's more of a first world problem then not answering the door to anyone after 6pm or calling around to friends/family unannounced 🙄
