To have complained to Uber Eats

gallgal · 19/02/2020 16:56

Ordered a meal for me and the DCs, we've all got stinking colds and have been hunkered down all day.

The driver is assigned: it's a female name and they're on a bike

Ten minutes later (not concerned about this aspect, quick) my food arrives, delivered by a man in a car. No sign of this female anywhere.

I normally tip generously and give good feedback but this time I did neither and actually complained that the driver wasn't who they said they were. AIBU to have done this?

I don’t agree with some of these flippant replies. For Uber (or any taxi), you’d expect the driver to be who they say they are (because axe murderer). You wouldn’t want driver x fronting for their mate. It follows that it’d be the same for Uber Eats, but it isn’t.

gallgal · 19/02/2020 17:41

So should Uber just not bother telling you who is delivering? Genuine question. I don't know the answer. I often choose UberEats because I like the security of knowing who will be coming and being able to track them in real time, so I know it's definitely them at the door.

Why do you tip the driver? Why are we following this American system where people don't get paid a minimum wage and expect to be paid in tips? What about the kitchen staff? Sorry I'm going off-topic.

GinDaddy · 19/02/2020 17:44

@gallgal

Firstly I'm sorry for your loss. I don't believe however that it gives you the right to take it out on the world.

Re your Uber "dilemna", here's the thing.

Does the app allow you to specify a female courier for your delivery?

No. It doesn't.

Does the app have terms and conditions that you possibly rushed through and ticked when you first got the app and were hungry for food. which state that a named driver may be substituted at any time for another?

I'll leave that up to you to read or find out.

My point is, YABU for a number of reasons but the main one is that Uber Eats isn't a concierge service where you choose the delivery person. That's not the agreement you enter into.

The agreement you enter into is that your food will be delivered within a time slot.

Uber provide you with driver details as a courtesy only. Not as part of the offering.

YABU.

(And before you or anyone else starts, neither I, nor family, nor friends have any connection to UBER whatsoever).

PumpkinP · 19/02/2020 17:45

Just eat doesn’t tell you who Is delivering, like I said, does it really matter? Confused

SunshineCake · 19/02/2020 17:46

If the delivery person didn't matter then one wouldn't get texts telling us that our food was being delivered in a green van by Pete.

OP, I understand your unease. I'm sorry people are being so gratuitously unkind. Some people just have to make themselves feel better by trying to put others down, don't let them.

I'm sorry for your bereavement Flowers.

My little town has neither uber or uber eats. I check its my takeaway by looking out the window and seeing they are carrying either an insulated bag (pizza) or white carrier bag (Chinese).

gallgal · 19/02/2020 17:47

@gindaddy That was actually a very helpful response, thank you for sharing.

Im surprised that the op opened the door. No one on mumsnet answers their door

Reallybadidea · 19/02/2020 17:48

I like the security of knowing who will be coming

But why does it give you security to know who will be coming? That's what I don't understand.

Chewbecca · 19/02/2020 17:49

I’ve never used Uber Eats so not thought about it but it matters enormously to me for Uber generally. I don’t want registrations and licenses passed around individuals, I want the driver to be the one who has been trained and checked.

PhoneTwattery · 19/02/2020 17:50

Jesus H Christ

Sausagewrole · 19/02/2020 17:50

I wouldn’t get in an Uber cab if the picture and car details didn’t match, but I care not who delivers my food!

The safety argument doesn’t make much sense, seeing as you can’t select a delivery driver to start with..

The delivery people do a hard job for little money, so I always tip and am polite and respectful.

Brazi103 · 19/02/2020 17:51

Actually I agree with you op. It's not about the food, it's about the safety aspect. I do understand what you mean.

goingoverground · 19/02/2020 17:51

It's an issue if something goes wrong, like the driver damages your car when they park up or harasses you, and the person delivering is not the person contracted by Uber ie they are using a friend's profile.

It's also an issue for Uber, as they need to make sure that anyone they hire has the legal right to work and insurance.

Microwavedtea · 19/02/2020 17:51

My concern would be that whoever actually delivers your food hasnt been vetted in any way. I dont know how it works but I would hope uber do some kind of check on the people they have deliver food if they're going to deliver under the uber brand.

GinDaddy · 19/02/2020 17:51

@Chewbecca

This is a very fair point when it comes to Uber as a taxi service - it is one of the main reasons why they are having licence issues in London.

If as a company they heavily fined people for doing this, created a signposted "report" button for anyone who shares PCO licence details or a car with another, and worked with TFL to get such people banned? Then I would have more sympathy for them as an organisation that is trying to safeguard people.

As it is, Uber love to hide behind the popular outcry every time their licence is withdrawn by TFL. "Ohhh I will miss my cheap fares" says almost everyone, me included - but they could also just run themselves properly and then we wouldn't have to miss anything.

gallgal · 19/02/2020 17:53

If you live in an area of London where delivery drivers have been subject to acid attacks (www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-41887982) and where gang and knife crime are rife the security aspect of knowing who is bringing your food might appeal to you...

OP posts:
Lllot5 · 19/02/2020 17:58

Well in that case the driver is at more risk than you.
But if a storm in a tea cup.

TatianaLarina · 19/02/2020 17:59

I live in London OP I don’t give a fuck who delivers my food as long as it’s not cold.

Walthamstow isn’t more dangerous than anywhere else. In fact, substantially less than some areas.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 19/02/2020 17:59

How OTT Precious

PumpkinP · 19/02/2020 18:01

I live in a not very nice part of SE London. Still don’t care.

Chochito · 19/02/2020 18:01

I think it's perfectly reasonable to have flagged the issue with Uber Eats. Who was the man and how did he get your address? Does the lady in the photo even exit / work for UberEats?

Purpleheadgirl · 19/02/2020 18:02

But you said there are more checks made on drivers in cars rather than those on bikes, so surely it was safer someone in a car turned up? ....

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 19/02/2020 18:02

Same here @PumpkinP .

I don't even get a photo . I feel cheated now Grin
